On a brighter note, yes Hawk is a very sterotypical fantasy name but personally I like it...

Not to argue but I must point out that it's "Hawke", and it's a surname.  A real-life English one in fact.  I honestly don't see it as stereotypical at all.

In his defence, he is a lowly peasant. You can't expect much from him.

Are you just repeating this for fun or something?  Numerous forumites have discussed this issue many times, but you insist on bringing it up again and again.

Agreed. Hawke is actually quite an unusual name.

Can anyone here tell me why "Hawke fled the Blight"?  no, so to speculte he was a coward is ridiculous.

..............and to be honest I don't want to know until the game comes out.

oops, my bad that's a spelling mistake I didn't catch :-/

I felt it was a rather stereotypical fantasy name because I've seen it used a lot in fiction (mainly fanfiction) and used for role playing character names too.
Yes, as a surname (although sometimes as a first name too).

But I also said I like it :) It's versatile, and (like "Shepherd"), doesn't have a gendar specific "feel" to it.

WHO TELLS YOU HAWKE JUST FLED. JESUS TAPDANCING CHRIST. Why do so many people assume that Hawke just said "boo hoo hoo, I don't even have my brown pants" and chickened out leaving the darkspawn to slaughter innocents. Maybe he fled carrying five disabled orphans on his shoulders. Maybe he fled after sweeping a box of kittens away from the darkspawn- and even if he (I am using exclusively the male pronoun out of laziness) did not commit some selfless act of heroism, it's not like dying in Lothering would have slowed down the darkspawn. The less people die, the better.

Also, even if he "fled the the Blight like a coward", surely to become Champion of Kirkwall and stuff he must be a pretty exceptional individual.

Also, food for thought, the Warden "fled" from Lothering as well. Does that make him/her a coward? Maybe Hawke too has something heroic to do in other places, just like the Warden.

YES, THIS.

This is the same as people complaining that you had to fight the Archedemon in Origins. Apparently, people think that you should not have to follow the game's main plot in order to play it.

Yeah
I even heard some silly guys claiming players won't have choice of
creating their own characters with unique backstories like they had in
DAO with dwarfs and elves. Such silliness[smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/wizard.png[/smilie]

Yeah, now they'll have to make do with creating their own character with a unique backstory like the did in DAO with a human. Times sure are tough.

Seriously. Besides the inability to pick a race, what exactly is different from Origins?

dwarf commoner died without duncan.
Elf would have been executed/in prison.
Other elf would be dead.
Dwarf noble would be dead.*
Human noble is a coin flip.Could have died with more soldiers not being killed by duncan could have made it so he was overrun.
Mage would be in the circle during the abomination outbreak and could have died or become tranquil/killed/in prison.
Without duncan they are all screwed.

*As a Dwarf Noble, you could have been lucky to get and join "The Legion of Dead". Or not? ^_^

My Hawke would have thrown both the orphans and the box of kittens to the Hurlocks to slow them down when he fled. I hope the backstory isn't set in stone.

As an aside, the Warden stayed and fought in Ferelden, he didn't flee the country...

If I were to play the game (I'll borrow it from a friend to see how it is, and that way I dont have to buy one) I'd have Hawke cripple a few peasants, his sister...and couple of children...and any kittens I found to slow the Darkspawn after me.

I mean heck, you dont have to be faster then the Darkspawn to run away...you just have to be faster then the people next to you, so you might as well hedge your odds Posted Image

I sort of prefer it to stay this way. Don't want my Hawke to be a perfect character or "knight in shining armor". Too much of that.

i don't know if this is going off topic but the whole walking around town experience wasnt that great to me it seemed to evolve a little bit better than nwn 2, but i hope that things improve in da2.

I believe people are more frustated by the single origin than that Hawke fled or lived in Lothering

Yeah, because always starting with the same background was such a failure in Baldur's Gate.

Sure, you could play different races in BG, but you couldn't come from anywhere but a human settlement, and you simply had to be Gorion's ward.

And, your race and class were rarely ever referenced.

Maybe that's why they're genocidal. People run from you, fire arrows in your direction, and you just wanted to ask for some cookies...
I sympathize with darkspawn, yes.
