It makes perfect sense really.  Look at the size and angle of the eyes. 

With their masks always being on, sexual selection becomes limited to the shape of the body, not the look/shape/appeal of the face.  Thus, there is no selection for people with beautiful facial features to reproduce (as happens in our society), and you get train wrecks like this. 

It fits with the lore so deal with it.
