Yes, no, maybe... will there be a Dragon Age 2 toolset?

I think what Jason said hit the nail on the head.

There is a big difference between tools that make the game being released and functional good toolset that can be given to the public. NWN was built and conceived with the toolset as one of the top priorities. DA not so much. I know some of the BioWare guys worked really hard on the toolset before hand (I was part of the toolset users conferences) but some of the big changes in concept have lead to some of the problems we all know of.

My hope would be that they find a way to solve some of the ongoing problems with the existing toolset. There is a ton of untapped potential there and some great modules can be made with it. If they make it so that new content can be used in the original toolset with at least a wee bit of effort put into solving some of the big problems it is all salvageable.

Bioware seems to dislike that too much already leaked out, so it quite possible that for a while now we won't get any new specific info

What do you mean? I think everything that has been said so far was done by them through the forum, previews, and the demo they did during comic-con.

honestly I'm more expecting them to do an engine update than a full blown new toolset.

They should just update the toolset support it.

If you have DA2 registered then you can download the files?

Most Dragon Age modders waste their time on nudity mods, not new adventures and quests with voice acting.

It's a nerd problem, not a DA problem.
Every week I check FO3Nexus, TESNexus, and DANexus there are at least 5 sex/nude mods on the front page.

I think Bioware made an awesome and professional toolset; the problem is that they built it for their studio to make DAO and most modders don't really work in the same way a studio does.

in the nwn toolset, making a new sword  or npc was pretty easy. However with DAO there is so much more depth to everything it takes a greater level of expertise to get anything done. In DAO it seemed that everything got more complex and more detailed. To make a dungeon  I have to build a level in one tool, populate the level in another tool, do any conversations and such in another tool, making creatures and headmorphs are a tool, ect. each of these tools are at a professional level of depth that I don't have the time to learn and use effectively.

The DAO toolset is really built around teams building mods instead of individuals building mods; and it's really hard to motivate a team under one vision and direction for a long time to make a mod.

^--- Like i wrote before when bioware use another computer to compile it and then think their community should have the same things... Also another problem was that they did by the looks of it. Remove alot of the things or atleast it feel like they did.

If they are going to release a toolset then they need to sit down. Make it fast. Make alot more easy and nice tools (multiselect movement for example)for it. Less annoying compiling.

I will try to release as many mods as I can if I can figure out how to use the toolset.

Probably areas mostly...seems easier.

I doubt they will do a new toolset. The old one came out because it was started Pre EA. I doubt EA will give us anything they can not charge extra for. If it was planned I think we would have heard about it by now if only to calm the ranting going on. They would have done some Beta testing etc (that's what they liked to do) since the game is not really that far off (worryingly IMO)

As I have said for years EA is in charge get used to it. this is not the BW who made games like NWN and gave us so much care and attention to detail. Expectations need to be lowered or you will be disappointed. Think of it as EAware not Bioware.

KalDurenik, of the things you could criticize the current toolset for, I didn't really think being "watered down" could be one of them. If anything, it hasn't been watered down enough; simple tasks are more complex than they really have to be. A good example being fact that most people end up reusing in-game levels, as opposed to creating their own.

I would trade some advanced features for extra usability, but that's just me.

In the defense of myself and others interested in creating levels, it is broken.  Badly.  We have to use an opensource lightmapper that was tacked on at the last minute because Bioware wasn't allowed to let us use the one they did.  You would not belive the amount of headaches this alone cause.  Creating a custom overworld map is either broken or insanely complex, I'm still parsing that particular thread.  Oh and water for outdoor levels is broken if your new level isn't in the main single player module.  In order to get water to show in custom modules, we have to do a bunch of module switching for any map that needs water.

Oh and they don't support tablets.  Common, even Blizzard supports tablets in the SC2 Editor.  Betrayal man, betrayal.  (edit: this last point is meant to be somewhat humorus as I realize there aren't many people with Wacom tablets that do landscaping)

So ya...support on the DA:O editor has been lacking.  I'm somewhat afraid to see what will happen with the DA2 editor

This is what I'm hoping for.  Something that existing mods can be saved in so that they work with DA2.  All those style mods that don't have to be re-created means that the modders can get on with polishing them or moving on to more complex projects.

If NWN2 is aything to go by, we are still very early in the modding cycle for DA and I wouldn't want to fracture a nascent community.

I really hope there is a toolset.  I'll still buy DA2, but I likely won't play it more than once or twice and once I'm done with it, I will stop buying DLC.

DAO I've played over and over and still continue to play and purchase DLC because of the mods that have been created that allow me to play so many different ways.

ME2 I played twice and stopped buying DLC at Kasumi.  Since the mods just aren't available like they are with DAO, I lost interest in the game and have no interest in finding out about new DLC available either.

Hopefully yes...i've managed to rig my own armor into the game and IMO i prefer it above anything Bioware came up with tbh, it also gave my character a unique feel, essentially it made me play DAO about 15-20 times, despite the fact i only played as a mage

So the "back paddling" of one of the "dev" on the TS, was just an "exercise". Wouldn't surprise me. :?  Another "scenario" would be for now: Devs: "We are fixing the TS and we will make it compatiable with DA2! Hurray!  But you guys have to sit tight, for as long as it takes for us, to do so. Hurray!"

Somehow, I doubt it! A "working TS" for both? I am kidding myself don't I? :?
Well, no working TS = 98% Chance me not buying, "Game DA2".  ;)

It will probably fracture anyway, between those who prefer the graphics style/ gameplay/ characters of one over the other. The games are too different for the community to remain intact.

If they don't release a full TS (or a patch) I hope they at least give us something barebones to create morphs, armor, weapons, etc. Even small changes like that can make a game more fun.

*is trying to remain optimistic* :crying:

The reason why mods have mostly yet to come out for DA:O is because it

a) takes time to learn

and

B) is a hellof a lot more complex.

I've done some VO work on some mods, and so I know there's a lot of stuff in the pipeline that's coming pretty soon. It just takes longer with DA:O because the production quality is able to be better than NWN. I suspect that the DA:O mods when they start to come out more often will be great and will increase the desirability and replayability of the game, if they're able to advertise properly to people here.

In all honesty, I think they will be releasing a patch to our TS. If they didn't the nerdrage would be (over 9000) overwhelming, to say the least.

maybe someone already said this, but isnt it the same engine as DAO? and probably just need an engine update, or more "tools" for the set

The only tricky part to updating our current one though, is how will people use it to make DA:O mods? I think one of the reasons they are so hesitant to say anything concrete stems from them not being able to accommodate both DA:O and DA2 in one toolset. I have faith they will figure it out, but it may take some time. *optimism*
