If there's no toolset, what are the modders on DANexus making their mods with?
You can still hand edit files that can be read.

The lack of toolset is a big mistake.
Modders would be already working on the "same cave, same house" to make them different.
A toolset would keep the community active and interested. Many complaints would become irrelevant.
Games like NWN OC and Oblivion are still popular and beloved because of their toolsets.

What reasons exist that make release of the editor potentially undesireable from Bioware's POV?
I agree! A toolset is a win-win combination: the community has the opportunity to enjoy always new stuff, and the game enjoys more longevity and an active fanbase.Pedrak wrote...

Only the community which actually sticks with a game playing mods, or playing the PnP game cares about canon and world building in the first place ...Darkened Dragon wrote...
Second would be franchise purity. As DA is looking to become a larger franchise as some of us had hoped NWN would of became, some of the user created mods would push out non-canon material.

I'll also add this, and straight to BioWare. We're PC users. We tinker, we build, we innovate. We also subvert, hack, and overclock. A toolset /will/ happen, with you or not. If you don't make it for us, we'll make it ourselves. Might as well walk the path that makes everyone happy.

I personally don't think it has much to do with making developer DLC seem more lucrative and more along the lines of them worrying about what people can do with the game that they might not want their name attached to. There are quite a number of *ahem* adult mods for DA:O and while the devs can scream, truthfully, that they have nothing to do with it, certain legislative bodies of government will willfully fail to see the distinction and accuse them of allowing it to happen. Besides, I think it is like Laidlaw had said before release. They saw more sales on consoles who have no use for a toolset, so they didn't invest resources in it. Personally, I think it would have been a better move on their part to try looking into ways to impliment user generated content made with the toolset on consoles.

Spam your facebook friends to buy the new companion armor DLC. If it sells 2 million times you will get a DA2 toolset.
While I thought that there'd be a toolset before the game was released, I'm kind of doubting it, now. I mean, the first thing that would happen is that people would remake the game. Combat would be completely overhauled, the clothing/inventory restrictions would be removed, models would be tweaked away from the 'signature' style, etc. In short, people would undo many of the changes that were purposely made. Would they want that? I don't know. I kind of think not. What if a modded, more Origins-like game was more popular?Duchess of Dumb Fries wrote...
Question: assuming they release a toolset, and it has the same amount of control as the one for dao- would we be able to stop enemies from raining down on us?
