If there's no toolset, what are the modders on DANexus making their mods with?

You can still hand edit files that can be read.

The lack of toolset is a big mistake.

Modders would be already working on the "same cave, same house" to make them different.

A toolset would keep the community active and interested. Many complaints would become irrelevant.

Games like NWN OC and Oblivion are still popular and beloved because of their toolsets.

Ironicly enough I went out and bought a new copy of tes 4 for the pc a few days ago,(I had it for xbox when it first came out) the main reason was because I want to play it with mods (and I need something to play while I am waiting on this game being delivered lol)

Anyway the point is, I think the release of a toolkit will help them sell this game long term, atleast for pc.

Think about it, all games have flaws, no matter how great or small, it almost  unavoidable, there is no real reason to not give the gameing community the ability to polish over any flaws the game has, and moreover it add a whole new level of customization to the game, and thats a huge selling point.

I am pretty sure we will see one at some point even if it's the very last thing they release.

What reasons exist that make release of the editor potentially undesireable from Bioware's POV?

Its hard to gouge customers with DLC when they can craft superior content in 5 minutes...

Also, going by the game the editor would be composed of 3-4 textures and a cut/paste feature.

I agree! A toolset is a win-win combination: the community has the opportunity to enjoy always new stuff, and the game enjoys more longevity and an active fanbase.

I personally don't think it has much to do with making developer DLC seem more lucrative and more along the lines of them worrying about what people can do with the game that they might not want their name attached to.  There are quite a number of *ahem* adult mods for DA:O and while the devs can scream, truthfully, that they have nothing to do with it, certain legislative bodies of government will willfully fail to see the distinction and accuse them of allowing it to happen.  Besides, I think it is like Laidlaw had said before release.  They saw more sales on consoles who have no use for a toolset, so they didn't invest resources in it.  Personally, I think it would have been a better move on their part to try looking into ways to impliment user generated content made with the toolset on consoles.

I'll also add this, and straight to BioWare. We're PC users. We tinker, we build, we innovate. We also subvert, hack, and overclock. A toolset /will/ happen, with you or not. If you don't make it for us, we'll make it ourselves. Might as well walk the path that makes everyone happy.

Spam your facebook friends to buy the new companion armor DLC. If it sells 2 million times you will get a DA2 toolset.

Well a couple of things I seen with the DA:O toolset and Bioware's views. There are a couple of issues. One of which I even recall happening in NWN and NWN2.

One is intentional and unintentional DLC inclusion in mod releases. Whether it is substitutions or actual DLC content.

Second would be franchise purity. As DA is looking to become a larger franchise as some of us had hoped NWN would of became, some of the user created mods would push out non-canon material. Which, IMHO, is more beneficial than detrimental, but I did see a mod that was in dev. at the nexus that was halted by the creator because of something Bioware nixed with it. I ran across it yesterday after I reinstalled DA:O so my wife could play it with mods, just can't remember which mod posting it was.

I, looking from a student of game design at ITT viewpoint, really hope they do release one. Just one that's more stable.

Probably not, they dont want people to create better stuff for free than what they charge you for with overpriced dlc.

Only the community which actually sticks with a game playing mods, or playing the PnP game cares about canon and world building in the first place ...

For other people the world is something they consume for a couple of weeks every few years, that's not enough for the canon to make a lasting impact. For most people a single player CRPG isn't like say WoW, Warhammer 40K or comics where the world impacts the players much more frequently.

All I want is a mod where I can input my Witch Hunt save, click off what decisions I would have made during DA2 for Hawke if I had played it, then have it generate a save file that I can import to DA3.

I think Bioware/EA are happier when they don't have to spend time/money on it, please proof me wrong though.

Yea, but that's like saying we should not use fire because it can burn down the house. For me mods added lots of replayability and kept my interest in DAO, the adult stuff is minimal compared to ordinary mods.

And while developers like Valve and Bethesda take their time and release their tools, encourage their users to use them and even hire some of the modders (or at least pay attention to their tips and improvements) Bioware rushes out a game in 18 months and forgets about a toolset and hides from its community, and EA are scrapping the bottom of the barrel because they just remembered they own the Ultima IP, so they proceed to close down they only fansites that were keeping that game alive, because they probably want to produce another misguided product in a genre that doesn't sell according to them but that has a name that some may recognize.

Geez, that was a mouthful.

Question: assuming they release a toolset, and it has the same amount of control as the one for dao- would we be able to stop enemies from raining down on us?

While I thought that there'd be a toolset before the game was released, I'm kind of doubting it, now. I mean, the first thing that would happen is that people would remake the game. Combat would be completely overhauled, the clothing/inventory restrictions would be removed, models would be tweaked away from the 'signature' style, etc. In short, people would undo many of the changes that were purposely made. Would they want that? I don't know. I kind of think not. What if a modded, more Origins-like game was more popular?

A modded, more Origins-like game being more popular would empower sales, which is clearly the most important thing for Bioware/EA.

A DA 2 toolset would be really cool. I loved creating new weapons and armor for origins.
