If i were a dev I would despise this community, everyone's always whining and ****ing. If were going to have discussions in the forums could we at least try to act like mature adults and not yell at each other?

The RPG genre is by-and-large stagnant due to attitudes like this. Who says that it is "their hero" and not "your hero" just because they decided to cut Origin stories so that they could make the primary campaign better? There are more ways to handle character customization than just having a bunch of options at the start and going with it. Instead, couldn't character customization come as the story progresses? As in, the character is defined not by his or her backstory, but by his or her actions and choices throughout the course of the plot? I'm sorry, but your judgement of the game is a severely traditionalist and anti-progressive stance on RPG develoment.

Thank you. I couldn't agree more with this, especially the point about how your character is defined not by his backstory but by his choices.

I see a lot of loose talk on this thread about how some people "don't understand the RPG genre." As someone with a 30 year history with RPGs and CRPGs as a player and game master, and as a CRPG modder, let's just say that I beg to differ on some of those issues.

Honestly, DAO doesn't give you much more freedom than the dreaded ME. And DA2 looks to be leagues ahead of both. Think about it: Shepard = Marine, DAO character = Grey Warden. They both set out on a mission to save the world/galaxy from a threat that many people don't even believe exists after recruiting a rag-tag squad of variable morality, sacrificing much for the sake of "the mission." You can't turn down this mission, only make the same decisions in a slightly different way.

Now in DA2, you are Hawke, and you're doing what you need to do to survive, and to thrive. I mean, slates don't come any blanker than that.

Hopefully this will lead to me finally being able to actually do what I like instead of what I imagine my character feels he has to do.

Why not just make console spin-off like Baldurs Gate and proper pc game?
Properly A) Please all fans and B) Sell More.  PC gamers care more about
content than big flashy Mass Effect presentation, even if it means chopping the budget, nobody who maters give a crap, at least proper CRPG for winners.

Barring the combat, it's the exact same game.
So no, it's not what I mean, pc gamers still stuck with Mass Effect, which isn't a very good RPG.

Pretty much, yea.
I'm sure there are a sect out there who want a deep CRPG, but for the most part, shallow, streamlined presentation over substance games tend to work best on consoles, passive entertainment, sitting on the couch, relaxing, not leaning forward with a keyboard with104 keys like a winner.

Hawke will most probably have Voice ! which DA:O chars did not.. And they already planned this before releasing dragon age so it's a bit to late to even change it.

Did you think it was named Dragon age origins For no reason?

But indeed i sorta hate having a Char pretty much made for me.

Some of the greatest games ever made came out on consoles.

The PC is only the best gaming device because it is the most adaptable, not necessarily because it has the "deepest" or "best" games (This is coming from someone who buys all WRPGs for the PC, too). Don't be a generalizing fanboy/fangirl.

Edit: OH WAIT YOU'RE BEING SARCASTIC HAHA YOU AM FUNNY

I thought your post was nothing but pc elitest garbage until the very end there. That line "leaned forward with a keyboard with 104 keys like a winner," totally bought you my vote, and I don't even own a pc anymore.
You actually made me LOL.

But they are offering more. Hawke will very much be your character; the devs have said that you can shape him in many ways, and that his rise to power can be attained various ways. Whereas the Warden can only kill the archdemon and save Ferelden.

Don't just judge the game by the backgrounds. Shaping your character by your actions in game is just as important.

Totally agree. I was going to say the same thing ^_^

No there not, I could shape, my Dalish Elf, My City Elf, My Noble Dwarf, My Thug Dwarf and My Human all in many different ways unique to there up bringing. but now I am stuck to Just ONE ORIGIN STORY, WHICH IS NOT A SEQUEL this shoud be an EXPANSION or DLC.

Why do people keep saying this? It's DA2, not DA:O2.

1st off the name Hawke sucks, dont care what you say, you all spent at best 5 minutes of this, Raven might of come up as well but a coin toss decided this.

The truth of the matter is you only allowing us one origin story now, instead of the multiple you gave us with the original. as some one said earlier and it needs to be repeated your making us play your hero instead of our own.

And that basiclaly is a step backwards and is not a sequel in my eyes.

But what it is , is easier and simpler and allows you to capatilze on a name quicker.

So please stop lying to us, I have never crapped on bioware ever, well except you not allowing throwable spears in any game or whips which I asked for from bg1.

I have no doubt that  DA2 will be a decent game, but its going to be the temple of doom  instead of the last crusade. your just trying to make a buck. its sure as hell not a decent follow up.

Bioware isn't going to change the game simply because you don't like it .
