Hopefully sidequests from both games come to something in ME3. I am wondering, for instance, if my choice with the Preaching Hanar will do anything. Hopefully, it will.

"This one remembers it, it helped this one spread the name of the Enkindlers on the Citadel many years ago. This one would like to offer it the services of this one's group of Drell assassins. This one hopes it is helped by this one's offer."

I like writing as a Hanar!

What a horrible analogy. I'll work with it though. Your ME1 cookies are a bit off, its not just six cookies that tasted different and delicious. Its a whole bathtub full of cookies (some good some not, almost all identical though). The first few were great, by the time you finish the whole tub though you're just sick.

On the other hand, the ME2 cookies are just run of the mill chocolate chip, but its only a plate of them. You eat, you're satisfied but move on to bigger and better things.

Bathtub cookies also come individually packaged, and in some cases it may take you as long to get access to one of them as it does to finish two of the plate cookies.

Gives you time to savour the last cookie. I'll take the tub. So much other content being produced if over-designed, under-written crap, that I'd prefer the ME universe not devolve into it. Over-written and under-designed is the hallmark of RPG.

If mediocrity is the hallmark of RPGs, then yes that would be how we would measure it. But I didn't see other Bioware games devolve into this formula. Here's the problem. Other Bioware games may feature short side-quests, but reaching the target of each one doesn't usually take longer than the quest itself. Side quests on the Citadel are fine, as they're quick to find, easy to finish, etc.

Every other mission however is tedious. Galaxy Map, locate system, scan system for planet, land in mako, reach facility, kill single room with bad guys, travel to Normandy, locate quest-giver, etc. It's entirely pointless. All for less than 5 minutes of game time to clear out the same generic room of enemies. Include the fact that some missions (Geth Incursions) have you do this 5 or so times and it's easy to see why Mass Effect's system is so broken.

Agree with everything said here

Also ME 2 has a very nice combat engine.  ME 2 also has more dialogue than ME 1.  With the N7 missions they allowed you to get some extra playtime out of what was going on, while succumbing to the limitations, but succumbing so they did it without it contradicting the setting (emails).  And they give you bonus stuff to do

Which

IS WHAT A SIDEQUEST IS

Just because they lack dialogue doesn't mean that they are poorly written compared to whats in ME 1.  No wonder the DA and ME fans hate each other.

Storywise yes. Gameplaywise no.
