Dog was probably the biggest oversight of the Dragon Age party. He should either have had his own slot, or he should have scaled better and had a larger tree. That does not mean there should be five full party members, however.
6 party members instead of 4

This is the best choice. Make the dog a character that is always close to you. You know, like a real faithfull dog.

Eh. I thought Dog was pretty good. My human noble took him the distance, and he carried his weight. He's certainly more useful than Leliana.
I think 4 was a fine number. You guys may well be better than I am at managing a large party, but I never felt like I had a good hold on everyone in BG2 and I certainly am not sure I could fully manage a larger party than 4 in DA:O. Regardless, I feel like DA:O is/was about making choices, and with a party size of 4, you had to make a choice. You couldn't just bring everyone along.

this
one of the reasons I want 6 slots was because of dog, I liked it but i never picked it for the party simply because a real person was worth more than a random treasure digger
if we have 6 slots we can fill the basic four (healer, mage, rogie, fighter) and have two additional slots for the clowns and weirdos and animals simply to enjoy their presence

Engine permitting... yes, six please. Even if they can only do six on the PC. (I say this as a console gamer who knows that in many years time he will eventually own a PC good enough to run all this stuff)

There's a mod called 'extra dog slot' which you can get from dragonagenexus. Dog will then always be in the party, taking up the summoned creatues slot. I, too also, find 4 characters a bit to few. Especially around chests -ehm- the one you'll normally need a rogue to open, I mean. Luckily, there's lock bash modas out there. I agree that a 5 members party would be just what the doctor(s) ordered - maybe?

One thing that I disliked about DAO was that it kinda felt empty travelling with just 4 people. They should make it like BG and limit it to 6.
Hey, in a preview of dragon age 2 in the german magazine gamestar this point also come up. it was discussed in the bioware team, but they will keep "only" 4 slots for several reasons:
- performace reasons, also problems with the concept/design of the game (whatever this means)
- a good mix of your party members for a specific level/situation shall be rewarded. and of course, when you can have 6 party members while there are existing three classes, the choice is trivial. just use 2 from each class and you can challange every situation. there no tactic in the choice of the party members then.

I think all party members should come.
When you lose a party member you can really feel the effects of losing them.

All depends on game mechanics.
With DA mechanics (I hate them sooooo much) 6 members in team is rather bad idea..

There are too many interesting characters in relation to the party slots and I don't want Bioware to cut down on characters. So yes please do add at least another party slot.

I'd mind it less if they came up for a decent rationale as to why the protagonist wouldn't take everyone along. Or if every party member was there "storywise" but not "gameplay wise"... though that might annoy folk.

or how about all party members can join in

Having party members may slow the combat down a bit too much, and would also look clunky and bad if 6 people were crouded around 1 person, battling for room to attack.

It's different with Baldur's Gate =) That was isometric 2D game engine and also the character classes were limited. You needed a balanced party of a mage, a cleric, a rogue, a warrior and a paladin (to wield carsomyr), to keep the baddies away from your squishies and then you could be whatever you wanted to be. Oh and you had to have your love interest in the party, so they took up a slot. Why didn't they make Anomen a paladin? *sigh* Or Keldorn a love interest? >.< (yus i know he had a cheating wife and kids at home)
I think 4 characters is fine for DA, but, yes, I wish they'd give us a special slot for our warhound.
I hate having to choose between sten, dog and alistair. Wynne is just a given. Alistair is just hilarious. Sten is just awesome, and I just wuv my ikkle doggie, yus i doooo. And I'm just the rogue... because I have to be.

I think 4 and a "dog slot" would have been nice. I felt that choosing Dog was a waste of a character slot because he doesn't really add anything to the story dialogue wise. But, it would have been nice to travel with my dog without sacrificing meaningful party interation.
So, if we get an animal-type companion who has limited options and limited reason to use, I'd hope we can get a free slot for that character.
