It could be pretty neat, if maybe half way through the game, where Hawke now is a high profiled guy in Kirkwall. Maybe he is in charge of the Free Marshes defences. At this time the qunaris starts an invasion on the Free Marshes. Also at this point in the story, the warden should have ended the blight a year ago or something, and Sten should have returned to qunari-land, where he has raised through the ranks so he now is a war-general or something. In other words Sten is the one who is leading the qunari army and therefore the invasion.
That would make the war personal for Hawke. The guy who murdered Hawkes family is now leading an invasion of Hawkes new home. How dare he!
It could make for a nice climax at the end of the game, if you could choose Stens destiny. After an emotional conversation with Sten begging for his life and apologising for wasting your family a decade ago you get to choose.
1: Kill Sten yourself
2: Let Bethany waste Sten
3: Put Sten on somekind of war trial
4: Spare Sten. Enough blood have been spilled on his account
5: Dark ritual
Or if you made a lot of bad tactical decisions during the war, you could get a dark alternative ending, where Sten kills you and your sister Bethany. Perhaps without even recognising, that you where part of the family he wasted so long ago.

To continue a bit on this fictional plot/theory I made up.

Nothing against theories like this, indeed they can be fun to read and try to come up with other possibilities etc. BUT.... the bit I Highlighted for you would simply never happen, would probably be more like:
Hawke - YOU MURDERED MY FAMILY!!!
Sten - Yes
Hawke - So what have you to say for yourself in your defense?
Sten - ...
Hawke - Nothing? not even a "sorry"?
Sten - No...
