Console controls work the same as Origins: you pull one trigger to open a radial wheel of talents, spells, items, and whatnot. This screen freezes time and lets you fine tune your aim on a particular enemy. But playing as the warrior, we favored running around, using the talents mapped to the face buttons instead. Overall, the sense of movement is less clunky, the animation more fluid, and the blood more plentiful.

Overall, the combat didn't feel remarkably different from the first Dragon Age. It flowed a little more smoothly and moved at a quicker pace, but that was mostly because our talents and spells recharged quickly after using them. That could very easily have just been something BioWare tuned for this public demo--likely a lowered difficulty to help ease players back into the experience. After this admittedly brief demo, we're confident that BioWare knows what they're doing. This isn't going to be a hack-and-slash game.

Finally a preview that knows what it's talking about. Of course, haters are still gonna hate even though they've seen almost absolutely nothing about the game

In combat, it's not uncommon to see a Darkspawn explode with blood and stray body parts when you finish him off

Kratos Age 2.

To set the scene: a human male warrior version of Hawke (you can create
any type of character you want, but the name is always Hawke)

What a relief,  I was worried that I would be confused by choices:wizard:

Our conversational options were a little more action-oriented than
that, like choosing whether to take on a small group of Darkspawn
ourselves or letting our mage friend handle it for us.

Hmm, too many concersations I  think. More fight less talk! Bioware should limit conversations to "Yes", "You enemy, me attack", and "I like you". Maybe even "Grrr"-that would be crazy!:o

Kratos Age 2.

And here comes the troll.

So now the ability to chop off body parts turns the game into GoW ? I guess Oblivion, The Witcher, Fallout all must be GoW clones!

Nice find- nothing we haven't heard already really I guess. Still not too keen on the over the top nature of combat and the art style necessarily, even if its the "legend mode" or whatever.

Still, I'm going to be a firm skeptic until we get some news and footage of the PC version...

And some of them are far too oblivious to eat their words. Sigh. Oh, well. ^_^

Well yeah, do you usually stand around and talk about the weather when you're in battle?
"Oh nice weather."
"Isn't it?"
"Yeah maybe we should.."
SWOOSH Game over

These are obviously battle conversations so..

Hm. Is it possible that

Mage PC = tactical gameplay

Warrior PC = action gameplay

Rogue PC = ? a balance between the two? a third style?

Or, again, is this just a function of one reviewer's impression of a few minutes of play?

You've heard others give direct play feedback?

So I still don't get an iso view, but atleast I get to retain pause and play with mages.

The recharge on abilities is interesting, but as they said that may of been tweaked for the demo.

I wish we had an attribute to decrease recharge of talent times a la Sacred II.

where does he say he wants to talk in battle Ichika, and Kordaris please shut up until you have some actual proof that they are making the conversations worse than those in DAO

Well, on the console, whenever I play as a warrior, I hardly ever use tactics. Even in DA1, I was like RARGH HACK SLASH! with the mapped buttons. Playing as a mage always seemed more "tactical" to me, especially when I transferred to the PC. (And is part of the reason why I can't play warriors anymore... sob.)

Hmm, that preview is more mature than the other ones we've seen. Their general reaction is that combat isn't really all that different--just faster--and that it's too brief a glimpse to draw sweeping generalizations about the direction of the franchise.

The problem it seems with most of these previews from Comic Con is that the writers didn't have time to double check facts with the BioWare folks. So you end up with their raw impressions, which may or may not be factually correct- like hardly any of the writers mentioning that this part was supposed to be exaggerated.

I'm wondering just how different these "legend" parts of the game play from the actual thing though? Are they frequent or only present in the game a handful of times?

All in all, I think this seemed like a much better informed, better written, and more balanced view of the game, mainly because they withhold major judgment until they have more info.

I am curious as to how we'll be able to make our companions deal with fights rather than do it ourselves. Do we play as them or do they just do a quick cutscene?
