If every single post in the thread was from people like that, it would already be locked and a ban on future character threads would be in place. There is some legitimately good discussion that goes on in there.

...it's just smothered most of the time, because it's easier for a Talimancer to write a single sentence or post an image than for someone with justifiable opinions to write several supported paragraphs.

The best thing to do when trolls invade is ignore them. They feed on attention. Don't give it to them. There was some interesting stuff in here for awhile, but at this point the thread should probably be locked.

I can honestly say I'm impressed a "I don't really like (insert character's name here) but whatever) thread" has lasted this long.



Now to the point.

I like some parts of Tali's character others not so much.

Depends on the mood I'm in.

Opinions are opinions and I'm glad to see that your all being fairly mature for an internet forum.

I see your point, but part of the problem for me is that the character's emotional hooks seem too obvious. To some extent all fictional characters are designed and intended to appeal to the audience's emotions, but when they pluck a little too loudly on the heart strings it turns me off. Most people's response to Tali is either the aforementioned 'dat ass', or something along the line's of 'awwwww, I just want to help/hug her'. It's no secret that young people tend to feel alienated, alone, misunderstood, etc., so the Tali character's trials and tribulations seem tailor-made to access those feelings. Practically every time we meet Tali in the game, we're coming to her rescue. To me that's an obvious attempt to appeal to young males' desires. We rescue her from Fist's goons, we rescue her from the YMIR mech on Freedom's Progress (she doesn't even participate in the fight), we rescue her from the geth on Haestrom, and we rescue her from being exiled by the Migrant Fleet. She's the archtype of the damsel in distress, albeit masked in 'plucky heroine' clothing. And then there's 'dat ass', of course, and the mystique of her face-obscuring mask. The puppet strings are just too visible to me. It's the "I see what you did there" phenomenon.

In a sense though, you have described exactly what the majority of her fans think makes her so awesome. She is a character of continuing paradoxes and opposites. There was a post in the Migrant Fleet 2.0 thread that said something like this. Its how she is both strong and weak at the same time. She deals with extreme emotional turbulence and heart ache because people constantly alienate her. She is definitely not the strongest character in a physical and mental sense, but she absolutely has the strongest resolve. By far. And thats what makes her strong.

Her mother died. Her father is nonexistent in her life. Her people ganged up on her to help promote the cause to fight the Geth (or something else I don't remember). She has nothing, and still manages to pull through. Thats not even mentioning the fact that she's a member of the infamous Quarian race, which is generally hated throughout the entire galaxy. 

Trust me, I'm not saying she's the best leader, or a good leader at all, and admittedly you do save her too many times for me to really believe plausible (what would she have done if you didn't rescue her on Haestrom? She would've died for sure). In fact, she's a crappy leader at best (suicide mission anyone?), but thats not the point. 

In any case, a "damsel in distress" is stereotypically a pampered, sometimes selfish, rich woman (in this case, hence damsel, I'm not being sexist ) who always needs to be rescued. Tali is none of these things, so I would personally not consider her the stereotypical damsel in distress. So we rescued her for sure two times, and one time (with the Shadow Broker deal) it was possible she would've escaped. That is two times for sure. Shepard also rescued Garrus didn't he? If we hadn't come, he would have died, no doubt. What about Legion, Shepard saved him too. What about Grunt? He would've never known the light of day if not for Shepard. All I'm saying is that damsel in distress takes it further than I think her situation warrants for.

It was locked for being too big.

And maybe if you actually read that thread you would see the discussions that go on. In fact, go in right now. There's a fantastic discussion.

That wasn't Tali...

It was locked for getting off topic, not because it was too big.  Its happened to all the character support pages, the Tali one got a pass for a long time until recently.
