Why Udina?

Udina seems to be the more "renegade" choice, as he seems less principled than Anderson. On the other hand, Udina essentially sides with the Council bureaucrats and insists that the Reapers aren't real, while Anderson does the "renegade" thing by disobeying orders, punching Udina in the face, and letting the Normandy escape lockdown.
Basically, it seems to me that a paragon would chose Anderson because he is more honorable and principled, and a renegade would chose Anderson because he is focused on getting the job done while Udina is focused on politics. So I pose this question: does anyone chose Udina and, if so, what were your reasons?

While Anderson tries to place nice with everyone.
IN short Udina is a better politician, while Anderson is a better leader.

While Anderson tries to be PC.
Udina is thought of as a jerk and not liked overmuch, but increases human power.
Anderson is more respected and improves relations at the cost of human power.
I never pick Udina, back stabbing little turd that he is. Seeing Anderson send him back to his room is way better than listening to Udina go on and on again.

I originally chose Anderson but soon after I realised that I let my friendship with him and my distaste for Udina cloud my judgement of the decision.
I don't think you should fault yourself for those motivations.
Under normal circumstances, Udina is the better candidate for the job, as he is consumed by politics and the human interest movement.
However, in light of current events, galactic safety is more important than immediate political success, and you need someone who knows how to look past one and focus on the other, someone you can trust. You need Anderson.

I always took the choice at the end of ME1 as being lopsided, and that isn't good. Besides the beginning of the game, Udina was always doubting, criticizing, or otherwise working against Shepard. That's all he did after the beginning of the game.
Anderson, however, demonstrated that he would listen to you and give you the benefit of the doubt. He was always on your side. Near the end of the game, Anderson proves that he is capable and unlocks the Normandy for you.
So - emotionally speaking at least - the end game choice was between Jerkface or your Bro. Hmm, who am I going to choose?

And personally, I feel like the kind of politician I want in office is the kind who doesn't like politics. Most decent people don't.

They could've stood to make Udina a more sympathetic character. Not too much. Just enough to make you go, "Sh*t, and I wanted to completely hate you."
I agree. Udina was a bit one sided. Still, they succeeded in making people get annoyed by him, anyway. Mission success. Too bad this made the end game choice lopsided. Not good.
In my opinion, they should have showed Udina as a cunning or competent politician. He knows how to work the system and have to gain allies. During Saren's trial, the Council demonstrates that they like Udina, and that in normal circumstances they would give Udina the benefit of the doubt. That it was only because of Saren's Spectrehood - and the fact that Anderson was also present - that the trial went as it did. Udina was a friend of there's - indeed, Udina had made many friends in the political world of the Citadel.
The Council, on the other hand, views Anderson as an idealist who doesn't know what he's talking about. They think he's meddling in things he doesn't understand and doesn't belong in. They won't give Anderson the time of day. Anderson later reveals that due to his radical thinking, he makes enemies easy, within the Alliance or otherwise. Many other Spectres, he says, view him as a failure and phony, and they believe Saren's version of the story.
So Udina is a manipulator, but he has friends in high places. Anderson is more of an honest guy, but he has a lot of obstacles if he wants to be a politician - the system does not like him and is acting actively against him.
Udina will still be disapproving of many of your decisions, and he will always consider how Shepard's actions may affect the Council's impression of humanity.
At the end of the game, when Shepard is called to speak to the Council, you see Udina arguing against their decision to ground the Normandy. But he doesn't succeed, and he just gives a dejected, sad look at Shepard and says that he did the best he could, and that he's sorry.
And then Anderson punches the Turian councilor in the face.
And personally, I feel like the kind of politician I want in office is the kind who doesn't like politics. Most decent people don't.
you wound my soul.

It's hard for me to imagine Udina as anything other than an angry blowhard. Because of the way he is portrayed I find it difficult to believe that the Council could like him. It is similarly hard for me to picture Anderson as an unreasonable loose cannon.
I also find it ironic that under the descriptions you've just given me, some of the renegades who picked Udina would've picked Anderson instead. They liked Udina because he pushed for humanity and openly defied the Council. Him becoming a sycophant would certainly change that.

Come now, you can't honestly like politics. Or politicians. It's a crapshoot.
The only place I find myself liking politics is in fiction. In which case I love it. I do in Mass Effect.

The choice comes down to one thing.

But his desire means nothing if he doesn't have the ability to convince the council to do so.

Yeah, Udina being a well developed character & not a complete cliche would've been great.

In the case of a Paragon Shep, you've got a bunch of racially self-interested people on the council. If you want humanity to hold it's own in such a place, you need someone like Udina. Having played it both ways, you lose nothing as a paragon by doing this but humanity is much better off with Udina on the Paragon council. Anderson just can't get the job done. Udina's faults are mitigated by the fact he has to play against three other politicos of their own respective races to get things done (and yes you still get to keep your Spectre status if you play it right).
However, if you are a Renegade Shep, then you are all done playing nice and playing the political game. You've helped humanity seize political power from necessity, and that means you PERSONALLY need a friend on the new council and that means Anderson for all his political faults. In a renegade game, Councilor Anderson still gives you an "in" with the citidel govt (and can restore your spectre status although that is a lot less important for a renegade), while Udina goes on a power trip and tosses you aside completely.
