You'll find both fans and detractors of every single Origin.

Every.  Single.  One.

Which is exactly as one might expect.

I've played them all, and every class too.  They all work, they all have their own little events which are referred to (in passing) in the others.  They all help to create a more complete picture of Ferelden.

Best?  Depends on what you like.  As does the converse.

Most frequently played by all players, (according to EA's data) is Human Noble.

Least frequently played is Dwarf Commoner.

Make of that what you will.

Oh, and it wasn't until I played the Dwarf Noble that I developed particularly strong feelings about who should rule Orzammar.

But after I had it became an easy call!

I've tried all the origin stories but I've only completed City Elf, Human Noble and Human Mage (I was going to play Elven Mage but I wanted play an Amell after DA2)

Best: City Elf. She had a tough old time of it and I thoroughly enjoyed playing through the game as an angry Shem hating elf. Going back to the alienage later in the game is always best as a city elf. I tried the start as a male elf too but I don't think the story works quite as well.

Worst: Mage. Just found it a bit boring, even going back to the circle tower later in the game wasn't any more interesting as a mage.

Human Noble was more fun than I thought it was going to be (who knew I was going to enjoy hearing my character referred to as "my lady" as much as I did) and I really should play right the way through as a Noble Dwarf because the origin section was really good. Dalish Elf seems pretty weak compared to City Elf.

My first Warden was a female city elf.

Holy s***.

The only one I didn't see all the way through the origin was Dwarf Noble. I thought it was interesting taking two different routes with the Magi origin; a studious human female who turns Jowan in, and a tempermental male elf who protects him.

I've played all the Elven Origins, and the Human Noble Origin. My favourites were the City Elf and Human Noble. I'm going to play the Dwarven one next, and see if has anything to paint a different light on the Bhelen/Harrowmont struggle since both are tyrants in their own way.

Best one in my opinion was the dwarf commoner

The worst one in my opinion would have to be the Mage origin
....unless I can cheat and count the orlesian warden "origin" from awakening onwards

It's funny how your opinions change.  I've grown a lot of appreciation for the city elf and Dalish origins and lost a lot for the human noble.  It's only a couple months since I said HN was one of my favorites.

My favourite is the Dwarf Noble, maybe because it was one of the first and I was pretty immersed into it. I also really liked the Human Noble and City Elf origins.

My least favourite might be the Dwarf Commoner or Dalish Elf, they both seem kind of lacking compared to the other Origins and not all that interesting.

contrary to most of you my favorite is the Dwarven noble origin (Strange since my first play was Male City Elf)

The worst one: FEMALE City Elf...

I don't know where to start, "the princess" decides to do the rescue of herself because MY OWN FATHER WAS SUCH AN USELESS SISSY. My husband arrives to late just to die as a man, oh and this background removes any romance option unless i decide to toss everything to "what the heck" and flirt with (drums please) SHALE! only because Morrigan is not going to aproach another female... but since Shale is not romanceable i'm forced to make out with Zevran, playing a female city elf literally forces me to follow a straight line after origin passed, and origin really sucked big dinosaur balls. Is like playing Mario Bros but up-side down... you control the princess and cut the bridge just to see both Mario and Bowser drown in lava, well done... your reward, Duncan who could be your father if your mother had a bit less testosterone and your father had less progesterone of course, recruits you for the greywardens.

^ Wow..... I think you played a different game entirely, cause that description is so not what I recall from my time playing a female City Elf origin.

quotation: princess is not a real princess it's you if you choose the female city elf origin. I just could not bear the feeling of playing a reverse version of Mario Bros in every aspect:

You are going to marry Bowser (if you know what I mean, aka koopalings don't grow in trees)
Mario comes and instead of "saving you" he decides to capture you, rape you and probably kill you.
Bowser is too slow so he manage to get in when you did most of the job at rescuing yourself
The same outcome, cut the bridge and see both them fall in lava, feel sorry for Bowser because you are Peach

And to tell the truth I feel that City elf origin is the most lazziest one (but also the most nostalgic one: save the girl from a generic slighty gay moron and marry her), but the female counterpart was worse than the male one.

.... Yes, I'm fully aware that it's not an actual princess with regards to the female CIty Elf and that you were being utterly sarcastic in your blanket abit biased interpretation of the City Elf Origin story. Thank you for treating me like a moron who has no reading comprehension.  <_<

Additionally, the City Elf female can romance Alistair and Leliana in addition to Zevran, fyi. (unless that statement was also part of your ridiculous sarcasm...)

I don't meant that, i just ported my POV of the city elf origin. I don't try to be sarcastic but everyone considers i do, i do not why, since i stopped punching people everyone thinks that my talking has become more "sarcasticaly aggressive"

The questions which Origins are best is, of course, completely subjective. My own personal order of preference is:

City Elf
Human Noble
Dwarf Noble
Dalish Elf
Dwarf Commoner
Mage

The Human noble was my first. I actually enjoyed the Dalish origin story. The Eluvian mirror concept made a lot of sense in Dragon Age 2 when you have Merrill trying to put it back together. I also enjoy the circle mage origins.

It is too bad they didn't have an apostate mage origins.

What do you think is the best story?

Wow this is tough.  When I first got DA:O when it came out, I made sure to try all the origins at least once.

I felt the Human Noble was moving, but I'd say the City Elf beats the Human Noble by just a little bit.

For me, the Mage for the Human/Elf would be the "worst" as it was a bit .. eh for me.

LOL and just realized this is a necro posting ... hah!

For me, it's hard to distinguish between my favorite origin story from my favorite origin to play, since I tend to get into role-playing my characters and I find it hard to separate the overall experience into different parts.  For a long time, I was never able to get too far past Ostagar as anything other than a Human Noble (and completed the game multiple times as one), but I'm currently replaying the game as a Dalish and really enjoying this character in a way I'd never imagined.  So those two are probably tied for my favorite start to finish game experience.  While I loved both the Human Noble and Dalish origins from a background/lore perspective I am not sure I can fairly state they were the "best stories" because they have aspects that detract from that.  The Dalish is a bit lacking in drama and for the Human Noble, I found the Couslands a bit too cutesy as a family, and had trouble with having no trouble but to abandon my parents to death.

That being said, in terms of actual story quality (and it's been years since I played the other origins), I recall the City Elf origin being a very engaging experience, even though I never progressed too far as one game-wise, so that might be my vote for best actual story.

Worst, I don't know, I enjoyed aspects of them all.  Off the top of my head, maybe the Dwarf Noble story-line because it's hard for me to buy how stupid everyone was about Bhelen.  Though I recently played a Tale of Orzammar for the first time recently at least gave that a bit more context.

my favorite one was the city elf, it was so incredibly tragic and it made me feel for the characters. Ultimetely my canon is an elven mage, but none of them moved me as much as that origin, and more specifically the female one, its far more harrowing. i actually spent the entire playthrough wearing Nelaros' ring, but i did mod stats on to it eventually. Heh im sentimental like that, couldnt bring myself to take it off.  Im considering switching to city elf as canon , the elven mage has been it from the start though :P, and i kind of like the idea of having magic and the power it represents, especially when it comes to dealing with humans. Im also kind of curious about Cullens' thoughts on the warden, i think i read somewhere his feelings on your female mage warden were going to be mentioned in the DAI. My elf despises him though, a human and a spineless one at that, who blindly follows the chantry while looking at her with lecherous eyes.
