Instead what did she get? She lost Tamlen, her Clan, her heart, and so much more than she ever expected, or deserved.
All she wanted the whole time was to go home, it made me very, very sad for her.
Other than that, I /really/ enjoyed the Dwarf Noble (played a female), Gorim is so far my favorite non party member in the game followed closely by Tamlen. I keep hoping for a DLC for temporary companions to become permenant ones for the Xbox, but I'm not holding my breath. My next favorite was the Human Noble.
My least favorite was the Dwarf Commoner and the Mage.

The Human Noble and City Elf are amazingly well done.
Dalish elf and dwarf commoner really did not strike a cord in me at all.

It's fairly clear (to me, at least) that she was raped. Especially if you talk to her afterwards back at the alienage.
(more spoilers)
What enraged me later in the game is when I found out the new Arl had "purged" the alienage after I left, and I couldn't get back in. I assume that later on I'll get to have a "conversation" with the new Arl. I suspect he won't survive the experience. Sometimes, as a city elf going through the game, i really regret I can't make a seperate piece with the blight (hey, Archdemon. Leave elves alone, and you can kill all the humans. Kay?)
I liked all the origins. I thought the dwarven commoner was probably the weakest, city elf strongest. Both noble origins were much stronger and more moving than I expected. The Dalish one was totally about being forced to leave a very closeknit community where you're loved, that's what the final sequence tells you. But you won't get the feeling from it if you rush through--take time, and talk to everyone around the camp.

I also really enjoyed the mage one, which I haven't seen many people mention yet. I just really liked the whole dynamic with the templars I guess.
I was looking forward to playing as a Dalish, but I thought their origin was the worst. I understand the back story and how it is supposed to be a big deal leaving your clan, but the premise for the story felt way more interesting than the execution of it.

1) Mage
2) Female City Elf
3) Human Noble
4) Dwarf Noble
5) Dalish Elf
6) Dwarf Commoner
I would give my reasonings behind my ranking, but that may cross the line of spoilers.

So.. city elf, good at making me want to stabitty-stab all those humans. But I found it lacking world wise. When I hit noble, mage, and dwarf the world made a lot more sense so I could pick choices based on background I learned by first playthrough .. so they felt more satisfying to me as well as having 'a ha!' moments (dwarf noble.)

I've only played Dalish origin story for now. And it moved me. I do not see what is bland about it. it is deeply sorrowful story, but it is in a subtle way.You have to understand the situation and the mindset of the clan to be able to understand what a tragedy your character is experiencing. If you spend the time talking to everyone you get to understnd how close-nitted the clan is, and that you're just about to be yanked out of the only life and the only people you have known into a big wide world you have no clue about. The world your people try to shelter themselves from in order to live free and preserve the little history of the elven people that is left. For a Dalish, to be separated from his/her clan is like being without a heart.
+1!
I felt the same here!

The reason i prefer human noble is that it's major enemy is Arl Howe who is an outright son of a **** only wanting his personal gain and i enjoyed it alot when i sluaghtered him. However, in Dwarf noble origin ur enemy Prince Behlen has done alot of horrible things including destroying his own family to become the king however in the end he leads the dwarves to a much better future than harrowment so i kind of dont feel hateful and wanting revenge towards Behlen in comparison to Howe

Dalish Elf origin was one of the few were you were actually able to resists being taken by Duncan. It had some good dialogues.GmanFresh wrote...
what do you think i sthe best story?
I say
Best: Male City Elf and human noble coming a close 2nd
Worst: Dalish Elf--man it was bland and terrible
So in my opinion...
Best: Dalish Elf (played as a female character)
Worst: Human Noble (played as a male character)
Human Noble was okay at start, but then it became a bit annoying. I don't know why... Maybe these "No, you must escape! We can't. Why not? Um... We just can't!" and the fact that the character is being treated like a little girl, even if I was a guy in armor, had two swords on my back and a big black beard on my face. I know, the NPCs are the character's family, but I didn't expect that kind of treatment.

Then you're not roleplaying properly.

The dwarven casteless is a close second. What can I say, I'm a sucker for Luke Skywalker stories. Rising up from nothing to become totally awesome and all that.
I wasn't impressed with the mage story. It felt incredibly short and far less personal than the others. I never felt a sense of connection with Jowan, or anyone in fact, even though that should have been one of the most interesting stories. Maybe there should have been more interaction with Cullen instead. He *tons* of potential.
All in all, I love how all of the origins "happen" during the course of the plotline, no matter who you choose to be. It's interesting to think that it really just all hinges on where Duncan happened to be at the time to save the main character.

Reasons attached, minorly spoilerish, but no details.
Best origin: Human Noble, most engaging, most sad. 2nd
2nd: City Elf, good cast of characters, plot, and multiple view points = win. 3rd
3rd: Mage, good environment, magic, and deeper look into the mystical side of Thedas. 1st
4th: Dwarf Commoner, tough background, from gutter trash to hero story. 6th
Worst origin: Dwarf Noble, don't really care for Orzimmar, not as good of a story, ok characters. 4th
Worst origin: Dalish elf, while a good look at the dalish, it wasn't that engaging and just not very interesting. "Whoops, well, guess I'm a grey warden now, yay?" 5th
Edit: Added in order of when I played them in bold. And, I would actually say that Dwarf Noble and Dalish Elf are tied for worst. Not saying they are horrible, just the worst.

hate that the mother basically say you have to run away. Especially when I just carved up everything in sight while she kept getting owned and then stays behind. I also liked the city elf as both a male and female, but possibly slightly more as a male - tough call though. Dwarf commoner was ok, and it was good to be a bit of a bully. Dalish origin was good (for insight) but then at the end was just rather blah. Mage holds little interest for me at all - but then again I didn't really enjoy playing a mage much anyway.

1st: Human Noble. I play a female, and I love the whole story. That castle siege, the fight for your life, revenge of the fallen lover. The utter travesty of the situation. And then, later, revenge against the man who caused it all. Really satisfying.
2nd: City Elf. Also female. I love this origin too, the sense of community life, the hard-done-by nature of that life. What happens to Shianni. I haven't played past Ostagar, so I'm not sure how everything plays out after that, but I really liked playing through the start.
3rd: Human Mage. Male. I liked this story. I really got involved with the pair of lovers, the unfairness of their situation, the anticipation of them getting away with it. Really nice. And I didn't mind the fade stuff either. It was interesting.
4th: Dwarf Commoner. Female. I really liked the the crudeness of this story. I liked the difference of social status. The fighting wasn't the best bit, really, but I really liked the atmosphere of the story.
5th: Dwarf Noble. Male. I liked the camaraderie of with your comapanion. And I liked the cave exploration. It was fun.
6th: Dalish Elf. Male. This was fairly boring for me. I don't think I'm ever going to go past Ostagar with this character. It wasn't bad, but... wasn't exactly memorable.
All up, I think I'll play the top three stories through to completion, just to see what changes playout. I'm interested in whether there is more dialogue choices with Jowan, in particular. The others I don't think I'll touch again.

I loved Dwarven Noble. Absolutely fantastic. The only thing that bugs me is that there should have been some sort of cutscene when you reach the surface, as leaving the underground really is a big deal. Maybe someone/I can mod it in? I'd also have liked a cutscene when killing a certain origin person later.
Also, there should be more opportunities to talk to your companions about your past and lean on them for support. But I guess that goes for all origins.
I play a mage now. I liked parts of the origin story very much, but sometimes it feels a little forced. I look forward to seeing where this origin will take me.

2) City Elf - Expecially if played as a female. The male version is a bit cliche (go save the damsel(s) in distress!) though this is subverted a bit by the fact that your rescue attempt... well... it doesn't work perfectly. The female version on the other hand is the "damsel" rescuing herself - by going Kill Bill on an entire freaking castle. The villain is one of the nastiest - if not THE nastiest - in the whole game. The "I'm going to enjoy killing you" dialogue option doesn't do it justice. The origin has a few neat details - choosing whether or not to help the family that needs money, talking to the kids that are playing and deciding what story to tell them. And the big choices you make later on during the origin will decide whether your entire community embraces you as a hero or shuns you completely when you return to them later on.
3) Mage - This one is neat because gets you right into the action straight away. It also completely sets the mood of what it means to be a mage in Thedas. I found the "true lesson" of the Harrowing to be particularly chilling - especially since much of the rest of the game is about figuring out who you can or cannot trust. This origin has you make one of the toughest decisions in my opinion - and personally I didn't feel particularly good about either outcome. Which is part of what makes it so interesting. The origin does feel a bit tedious at times though, with all of the backtracking and errand-running it requires of you.
4) Dwarf Commoner - A lot of games with rogue classes fail to give you enough opportunity to actually play as a criminal. The Dwarf commoner origin, however, is perfectly tailored to being a roguish thug. Of course you still get a choice between being a cold-hearted criminal or someone who is really good at heart but is forced into the life which opens up some interesting roleplaying possibilities. You also get to choose just how loyal you want to be to your "employer" and have the opportunity to cheat him out of some money, which is always fun. The proving part of the origin is pretty epic - it feels good to show those arrogant nobles what a Duster can do. And the breaking our of jail sequence is fun too. I havn't done a full playthrough as a dwarf commoner yet, but I've heard that this origin is one of the most interesting in terms of running into characters from your past and having it effect the story in significant ways. Having played the other origin stories I can imagine why.
5) Human Noble - I found this one to be pretty cliche - even Ser Gilmore agrees ("Giant rats? It's like the start of every bad adventure tale my grandfather used to tell!"). And as far as I can tell, the only real choice you can make is whether or not to bang Dairren or Iona - which turns out to be pretty inconsequential. It also seems like there was originally supposed to be more to the origin that end up getting cut - like seeing Iona's daughter later on but not actually being able to talk to her. On the positive side, the human noble origin for all its flaws is well-executed - the cutscenes are some of the best in the game in my opinion.
6) Dalish Elf - I agree with a lot of other posters here that this one is the most bland. There really aren't any meaningful choices to be made - as far as I know killing the humans in the beginning doesn't have any real impact on the story. The origin also doesn't seem to impact your story later on as much as the others do... the encounter you have with one of your former clanmates is a bit of a twist, but its rather short and felt a bit tacked-on to me. I wouldn't say the Dalish origin is bad per se, but its just not as good when compared to the rest.
