I´ve played the Dwarven Noble and the Mage origin. I liked the Dwarven Noble the most, but the mage was nice too.

Best: I very much enjoyed the constant back-stabbing and surprises in Dwarf Noble origin. City Elf coming a close second.

Worst: Dwarf Commoner... just meh.

So, did anyone not like the City Elf origin? Seems to be up on people's lists.

i have played all and i think that city elf owns all other origins... (its the most brutal to :))

i mean if you are playing male city elf you have some really awsome dialogue options, like:

"I'll paint these walls with human blood"

i think that no one disagreeds with me that its an awsome dialogue option :)

(sorry for bad english)

Having played them all now, here's how I would rank them:

1) Dwarven Commoner
2) City Elf
3) Human Noble
4) Dwarven Noble
5) Dalish Elf
6) Mage

The dwarven commoner was my first playthrough, and I really got sucked into the story through it. Normally with a new RPG, I tend to restart a couple of times before I get a character I like, and to compensate for all the screwups that happen the first time around when you're not familiar with the game. Not this time - even though I DID make some questionable choises, I simply felt connected to my character so fast, that I had to see him through the game.

I think the origin story was the most satisfying for the dwarven commoner, and also returning to Orzammar as a dwarven commoner felt mostly like a satisfying experience.

The dwarven noble I played most recently... didn't feel so good about that. Good story and all, but too many loose ends that you end up DYING to follow up on, yet your desire to do so is frustrated by lack of options when you return to Orzammar. You can't track down the individuals who betrayed you - you don't hear from them at all, and you can't force a one-on-one confrontation with Balen that would feel remotely satisfying.

Apparently you CAN do something to work to clear your name, but ONLY if you first sided with Belen, and then switched to Harrowmont. Didn't know this at the time, so I just essentially told Belen's lackey to p*ss off. <_<

Overall there weren't any BAD origins as such, but it wasn't too difficult for me to rank them.

4) Dwarf Noble

5) Dwarf Commoner

6) Dalish Elf

I liked the Mage Origin because I felt like it gave you the most depth and information about the entire world of Thedas.

As much as I love the Mage Origin for getting the imagination flowing and introducing you to a truly unique world, I have to think City Elf has the most emotional impact of any of them, followed by the end of the Human Noble Origin.

I think all of them were rather well done, I personally have just never been able to connect much with the Dalish Origin.

Looking at the spread of responses, I see that the writers probably did a very good job with the origins, with the possible exception of the Dalish elf origin, which most people seem to rank pretty low.

It's amazing to see the same origin ranked the highest by some, and the lowest by others - but that's the nature of the beast, I guess. Different strokes... and so on.

I've only played the Human noble and mage so far. I like the way the Human Noble origin plays out the rest of the game, but I actually felt that the origin story of the mage is better. I don't remember making any choices of consequence as Human Noble--it seemed to be a bit of conversation at the beginning and then a dungeon crawl.

Best story ? Hmmmmm. Storywise none of the Origins is really that uber .. best is probably noble dwarf in this respect. But you can write each of the stories themselves down and it will never fill a page.

Best origin is IMHO Mage - long, extensive, fun - and worst ist noble human - very short, you never leave that damn small castle, and theres really not much too see. Oh and you get that stupid dog, but hardly any money. What the heck ???

About the rest, well... hard to put them into sequence.

I loved Daelish for being very stylish and full of lore. You get a lot of dialogue there too, maybe more than any other origin. No idea why people hate it, really.

City elf is not much, but its very very intensive.

Both dwarven origins rock for their own reasons. Dwarven commoner is quite intensive.

At the end of that story, when the PC's mom stays behind with his dad to the end.. it actually moved me in a way that no game has ever done before...

In my case, it only hurt my head because of wallbangig. This ending was completely out of place in a game that knows magic healing. Even worse Duncan was present and this guy should have had a stack of healing potions ready, for heavens sake.

Here's a question to those who dislike the City Elf origin: did you play as a male or female? I think that one is the one that can change the most dependant on your gender I understand.

I prefer the male version by far.

No idea. What matters is she survives and her rapists or would-be-rapists are lying in their own blood - no ?

I've only completed the dwarf commoner. If the other origins are this good, then I am in for a real treat. This is the first game I've played in awhile where I want to consider multiple play throughs.

The origins are some of the best parts of the game. Which is why I wouldnt want them again. I want such fun in every playthrough ! ;)

The only origin I haven't tried was the dwarf noble - that'll be my next playthrough.

Of those that I have played, I liked them all but I think I found the dwarf commoner and human noble stories to be the most engaging. The mage origin wasn't that interesting or emotional for me, though that may be due to the fact that I already knew about Jowan from previous playthroughs.

That's a good point about the mage origin. That may have played a part in why I didn't enjoy that origin as much as the others - knowing about Jowan made it difficult to role-play it as I would have without that knowledge.

Same as meme - I've only played the Daish elf origin story (as a chica) and was totally wrapped up in the story. I think it might be a situation where the premise is more interesting than the actual story - the best parts of it are in the setting, not in the plot. I feel like the Dalish have the strongest identity when you compare the origin stories... as a people they've had to overcome much more, have fallen further and suffered greater losses, yet they seem to be the proudest, happiest sect in the game.

But characters and setting aside, yeah, the 'go explore over there' plot-line felt kind of like a cop out. I still feel guilty about one of the decisions I made there, though, so it couldn't've been that bad.

I've played all the origins so far,
and at this point my favorite was the Dalish Elf by far. The setting of
the game, my Clan, the Halla, and Tamlen, it just seemed like my female
elf had a life there. She had a love, she was going to get married, have
strong Elven children and help lead the Clan.

Instead what did
she get? She lost Tamlen, her Clan, her heart, and so much more than she
ever expected, or deserved.

All she wanted the whole time was to
go home, it made me very, very sad for her.

Other than that, I
/really/ enjoyed the Dwarf Noble (played a female), Gorim is so far my
favorite non party member in the game followed closely by Tamlen. I keep
hoping for a DLC for temporary companions to become permenant ones for
the Xbox, but I'm not holding my breath. My next favorite was the Human
Noble.

My least favorite was the Dwarf Commoner and the
Mage.

I've only played Dalish origin story for
now. And it moved me. I do not see what is bland about it. it is deeply
sorrowful story, but it is in a subtle way.You have to understand the
situation and the mindset of the clan to be able to understand what a
tragedy your character is experiencing. If you spend the time talking to
everyone you get to understnd how close-nitted the clan is, and that
you're just about to be yanked out of the only life and the only people
you have known into a big wide world you have no clue about. The world
your people try to shelter themselves from in order to live free and
preserve the little history of the elven people that is left. For a
Dalish, to be separated from his/her clan is like being without a
heart.

Thank you, the 3 of you.

1) Dalish, obviously, for the above reasons.
2) City Elf. fairly emotional, roarin' rampage of revenge is kinda fun.
3) Human Noble. decent all around I guess.
4) Casteless. While not bad, I just didn't feel it in this origin.
5) Dwarf Noble and Mage. Its been a while since the DN, so that's probably why its so low. The Mage has been ruined for me because of the number of times I've been thru it. and because Jowan is an annoying, whiny tool.

I have only done the human noble, mage, and the two elf origins---and I liked some aspects of each. They each had parts that made them special. I looked at each origins with the character's viewpoint in mind.

The human noble's family moved me because I liked the close bonds that they shared and was saddened to leave mommy and daddy knowing that I would never see them again.

The Dalish story was interesting in that I appreciated the close community bond that was shared. I had tears in my eyes as my character was leaving them.

The City Elf was sad because of the fact that my character had to experience first hand the cruelty of the humans towards her people. I really enjoyed slicing Vaughn's head off.

I enoyed the mage origin both as a human and as an elf since I enjoyed being a pest to Jowan as best as I could. I teased him so much when it came to Lilly, and I just love Irving.

I have not yet found the dwarf in me, but I want to do the two origins just to get that achievement.

I did enjoy all origins, but maybe dwarf commoner the least. Allthough I think the dwarves are very well written in the game and I love the Orzammar section of the game most - I like playing dwarves the least ^^ ... just cannot connect myself to them as much.

The following it spoilerish, take care ...

After several playthroughs I have to say I like the Dalish origin most. If you walk around the camp and talk to the people, everyone is just so concerned about you and about Tamlen, I felt really connected to the clan. Then you learn, that you have to join the grey wardens without any other choice whatsoever and leave your clan behind - it got me very immersed. I also like the very last look you have at your people before you leave to Ostagar.
Actually this origin gave me the best experience throughout the whole game, because it felt so right for to be a grey warden - they saved my life and they are my new clan. Not having any personal motivation beside the wardens duty was actually a plus for my RP experience.

Just recently I started another playthrough as a human noble (because I wanted to do a 2h, and these big swords look silly on elves and dwarves, cutting their heels when running ...) - and at the end I got the same feeling as someone pointed out above: Where is the healing potions? Why we can't do anything for dad? It feels really stupid. I think the immersion would have been better if dad was dying the same moment you enter the room and mom goes on a crazy suicidal attack on Howe's men entering the kitchen a few seconds later ... a line like "Run for your life" and that's it.
But standing there and feeling that the game forces you an step you don't think is very well explained by in-world logic was a little "Meh"

1) Human Noble - highest replay value for me.

2) Dwarven Noble - almost as strong, but from a dysfunctional family too involved in politics.

3) Dwarven Commoner - same as above, and includes the greatest sense of betrayal.

4) City Elf - better when playing a female; not as strong in sense of loss when playing a male.

5) Mage - enjoyable story, but makes Demonic encounters seem a bit like child's play.

6) Dalish - strong sense of incusion to a clan, but made me feel too out of control of events. And I strongly dislike having to pass a skill check to learn of my personal past.

My first Origin was a female City Elf, and I absolutely loved it.

My least favourit Origins were the Dalish and the Mage. The Dalish was rather bland and left too many questions unanswered (What was that mirror? Did the Dalish have something to do with the Darkspawn?)

I also didn't like the Mage Origins because I didn't know anything about my character. The only thing we find out about him/her is that he/she is a talented mage. What about her family? Her life before the Tower? I would've loved to find out more about his/her past.

You have to realize that many mages might not have many memories of their biological families since they are usually taken away from them at a young age, or left at the Chantry once that their talents are discovered. The Tower becomes their home and those around them become their family.
