Worst: Human Noble
I can't believe everyone hasn't played every origin. It's unfortunate.

I also like this quote from an old thread.
mousestalker wrote...
What the really good origins have in common are reasons to care about your friends and family. In the city
elf origin you can wander around the Alienage and talk to the people. You can even solicit wedding presents out of drunks. Your father is there. As are two cousins. And it's explained that your marriage is an arranged one.
The dwarf origins are even more detailed. The DC family is believably dysfunctional. The DN origin
is a mini epic. The Human origin is fun, up to a point. Ser Gilmore is a great guy. You can team up with Mom.
With the Dalish origin, they went through the motions. The Mage origin also feels scanty. I have absolutely no reason to like Jowan. With Gorim, Shianni, Soris, Ser Gilmore, Mom, and Leske you do things with them. You
fight along side them. Shianni hits a lout with a bottle.
With Tamlin you can confront some shems and he touches the mirror. With Jowan, he shows up, says "Hi pal, I need you to help me escape 'cause I'm in love and they think I'm a blood mage (but I'm not, really!) and you'll be left holding the bag." We're given no reason to like, trust or aid him other than his assertion that we're friends.
That being said, there are two ways to consider the question. One is how good the origins are by themselves, as tiny stand alone adventures (like if you played them all (without advancing further) and then answered the question. The other is how well they set up the rest of the game.
For example, IMO the Dalish origin isn't very good by itself, but I thought it could set up the rest of the game nicely, for two main reasons:
1. It lets you make some negative choices, without feeling like your character is just randomly evil. You could choose to be nice and love everybody, but I felt the background gave you the ability to fit in being kindof callous or uncaring or whatever toward humans, in a way that made sense. Trying to be darkside in KoTOR felt kindof strange. Whenever I did something bad, i could never really justify it beyond "i decided to be darkside this playthrough." As a Dalish, I wouldn't say I did an over the top twisted character by any means, but I was able to make some negative decisions in a way that felt realistic or consistent or whatever. And when you are then nice to "people" at the Dalish camp later, it re-enforces the idea that your character isn't just a twisted psycho maniac.
2. It's good for a first playthrough. The world has a huge amount of backstory, and I felt as a Dalish it made sense to be kindof ignorant of most of the world. This is especially true on the 360, where the codex interface is a mess. I feel like it's ok to jump into the Dalish and not know much, whereas with some of the other origns I feel like my character should know way more than I did.
I also like that it presents you as a little more formidable at the begining. Most of the other origins have some amount of "growing up" theme, but IIRC the Dalish is already an adult, is first seen holding some people up at bowpoint threating to kill them, and gets to ostagar having already fought and killed a number of darkspawn.

The best origin is Dwarf Noble, by far. The human noble one is crap compared to it.
1st Dwarf Noble
2nd City Elf
3rd Human Noble (-1 in rank because it suck compared to the Dwarf one)
4th Mage
5th Commoner
6 Dalish (crap, dust, sh...)

My favorite was the HNO. It felt most connected to the game and the plot, and I didn't feel the need to play a character with a chip on their shoulder or one who was likely to be unscrupulous as seemed most corret for me with the city elf or dwarven origins.
My next favorite was the Dalish Origin. Compared to many of the Origins, it was good life, and it worked to convey the close bond between all the members of the clan. It was very sad leaving all behind and knowing that my PC would never see them again. it also tied in with the story very well, if not quite as closely as the HNO.
I'd say that all the origins were very well done. It's just a matter of what works for you personally in terms of roleplay and immersion.

I love my Human Noble, but I thought the Dwarf noble was the BEST origin overall, especially when I talked to my roommate about it, and said "It sucks that you get framed for killing your brother..." and replies "wait- framed? I KILLED HIS ASS"... the amount of roleplaying options in that one was staggering
on a side note... 7th origin coming soon! Apostate Mage!

2nd: dalish elf( how can people hate this one, after the human noble this feels second for best tie in especially in witch hunt) and it had the best motivation to join the wardens over the others with the taint)
3rd: mage( boring origin but picked up when i got arcane warrior)
4th: city elf: never played this one fully, i felt this origin was bland, and why would duncan recruit this one, seemed rushed at the end.
5th and 6th: dwarf ones, i liked the origins but i have no motivation to take a dwarf fully into the game, least favored race.

but Dalish Elf was the best. Lovely environments, great lore. I was genuinely concerned for Tamlen, and his further appearances really touched me.
Human Noble was the worst. That mushy parent drivel was annoying as hell. I wanted to distance myself from my parents, and although I chose dialogue that fit in decently, I still had to go through all that 'we love you so much' crap. I was being forced into some pretty intense relationships and didn't have much of a choice over the matter.
I preferred that being a Dalish, with your parents long dead, you could decide for yourself whether you love, resent or don't care about them.
Although a few established relationships are okay, you should be able to roleplay your opinions on people the majority of the time.
If you want to enquire about and then speak highly of your dead Dalish mother, you can do. If you want to just pass her off as a woman you never knew, or even resent her for abandoning you, you can do that to.
With Human noble it's taken for granted that you have an amazingly loving relationship with your family, and this is hard to ignore even when you choose the most dismissible/cold dialogue. I don't like that, and it ruined that origin for me.
Even with the City Elves, it's apparent that your relationship with your father is good (example of an acceptable established relationship) but it doesn't go to far into it, and you can avoid speaking about your mother. Despite Soris being your best friend, you can choose to not save him in the end, and then express no remorse. Shianni you can care for or ruthlessly betray, despite her being your cousin. With your bride/groom, you can choose to insult and dislike them and continue to not care about what happens to them, love them and continue to throughout, or waver between opinions based on events. There's no real preset taken-for-granted relationships.
With the origins being important for roleplay, I expect a lot of freedom in creating my personality and relationships.
Human Noble failed there, I think.

I've already planned out my characters for the other 4 origins so I'm excited about seeing their origins play out. Since I'm noticing that the Dalish Elf origin is getting low scores, I think I might do that one next and come back here to complain. Or not complain.

I have done all if the origins. And I have to say the most Interesting ones have to be City Elf and Dwarf Commoner, but to be honest I enjoyed them all.
Human Noble even though is a little cliche is excellent. The story of your family's death is moving, and Bioware did do a good job in making you feel connection to your family. Its also good because you feel a sense of accomplishment when Howe's land is granted to you. You can also become queen or "King"
Magi could probably be the most connected. Your apart of the Amell family (if your human)which means your the second cousin to Hawke the protagonist of DA2. Though Jowan is whiny and you never feel like your necessarily best friends with him, he does play a large role by poisoning Arl Eamon. You feel more connected to that mission knowing Jowan from the past. I personally think that the Magi Origin will be very interesting import into DAI especially if your in love with Morrigan.
Dwarven Noble is extremely interesting. You can either be the Stereotypical Noble and do anything to keep his family name above others, or you can be against the traditions of the Dwarves and see things from a new perspective. The story of your brothers betrayal makes coming back to Orzammar very interesting. Especially if you realize that your brother Bhelen is truly the stronger King to pick.
Dwarven commoner is a epic story to rise from the lowest of the low to perhaps becoming a paragon. Your with no caste and are seen as a disgrace to even be alive, but when Duncan sees you best some of Orzammars greatest warriors in the proveing he sees great potential. Its also one of the only origins that you feel like a true rogue in.
City Elf is a amazing origin especially if your female. You have lived amongst your fellow Elves for so long and have grown close to them to the point where everyone is family. Its the most heart felt story of them all. You slay dozens of guards to save your best friend/cousin from the Arl's son who ruined your wedding day, and slaying those guards to just end up getting away with it is very satisfying.
Dalish may seem the worst but I actually enjoyed it. Having to leave your clan is a very sad moment. You have to realize that you have lived with all those people all your life, and know nothing of the outside world. Don't just understand your own connection understand your characters connection.

I disagree.
I think the Cousland human noble is the best one.You can romance Morrigan and Leliana and marry Anora. Can't beat that with a stick.
There should have been a human commoner.I know they thought of doing it but it got cancelled during developement. An orgin like Daveth's would have been great imo.

I loved the Human noble best, it has (for me) the best connection to the game with the Landsmeet, Howe, Redcliffe (my favorite part of the game) and the Cousland family were warm and loving, Fergus was the perfect big brother type, teasing and reassuring all at once. Plus you get to be king/queen.
My second (close) favorite is female CE. You get to get in Duncan's grill on your wedding day, fight your way out of a sleazy nobleman's estate, slaughtering his guards and killing him.
I used to dislike dwarves but the DC weighs in as my 3rd favorite origin now, because I loved Rica's big sisterly affection/protectiveness toward her little sister and 'girl from wrong side of the tracks makes good' made for a great story.
While I love the connection mages have to the Circle story and Redcliffe (with Jowan) his presence ruins that one for me, as I found him whiny and annoying, wondering why my character would ever want to be friends with such a selfish jerk. I do prefer play as a mage to the other two classes. And since I play on the PC, a console command allowed me to play a Human Noble Mage.
The last two fall in dead last, with Dalish edging out the Dwarf Noble by a margin of the additional reunion with Tamlen late in the game.
I hated the DN. The family sucked majorly with dad siding with Bhelen 'for the sake of appearances', Bhelen and his fratricidal (possibly patricidal) tendencies and general doucheness. All that sleazy cutthroat politics ruined it for me so that by the time my DN runs into Gorim in Denerim, and found out he had moved on practically by day one of his exile, and he gave my DN the letter from Endrin I wanted to shove my fist through the monitor. After finding proof of my DN's innocence and sticking it to Bhelen in Orzammar, I had force myself to finish the game.
But at least I can say I completed all stories.

*minor origin story spoiler*
Duncan had to force me via conscription *end of spoiler* I will say that I just loved it, and if people think the Dalish Elf story is bland, then I cannot wait to play through the other stories as I absolutely loved the Dalish Elf origin story.

Idk if I would say "bland". It's just something about it that's not really my thing, lol. But I like them all.

Human Noble - it bugs me. I think the voice acting is bad in places, the story is rather twee and cliche, the eventual confrontation with Howe is not big enough to give a Cousland's personal revenge story a meaningful end, and the idea that the Landsmeet would allow you to crown yourself prince/queen consort is ridiculous. My least favourite. It baffles me that this is so popular.
Dalish - I kinda like the way the mirrors book-end the story with the Witch Hunt DLC, I know it's a rather simple dungeon crawl, but that doesn't bother me - and nor does the fact that you don't return to your clan for the treaty mission. What does bother me is the fact that the look and accents of the clan were completely retconned for DA2 - not to mention a member of your clan is present at a DE's funeral/victory celebration when DA2 establishes the entire clan relocated to Kirkwall around the time of Ostagar and stayed there for a decade. There is also the issue that a DE warden is apparently conscripted out of charity to save their life, rather than as a reward of ability.
Mage - I seriously like this origin a lot. I know a lot of people are down on it, but I think it's clever, intriguing, and a good introduction to how magic works in the DA world. My only niggle is that it exacerbates the brokenness of the Arl of Redcliffe's timeline. Which is a real shame.
City Elf - it's a good story, and it alone gives you a solid reason to kill Vaughan (I can never think of an in-game justification for a non-CE warden to kill him in Howe's dungeon, and it bugs me to just let him go). My only issue here is a trivial one: Duncan recruited Daveth in Denerim, but when? I thought the idea was that Duncan is scouring the country for recruits and sending them to Ostagar for their joining. But if Duncan recruited Daveth and the CE warden in the same place, why send them south separately? Why didn't he keep Daveth with him while he visited the alienage and then all travel down together? Again, I know it's petty, but it still gets to me.
Dwarf Noble - probably the best origin in terms of story. I love the freedom you have to play any sort of character - even downright horrible ones. I love that there are several ways the story can play out. I love that it's right at the heart of the Orzammar plotline. The only niggle is how few people acknowledge your former princely status during the Orzammar treaty quest, but that's not a deal-breaker.
Dwarf Commoner - this one wins for me. Good story, a decent reason to pick Behlen as King, arguably the only story in which you are conscripted for your fighting prowess, and a good justification for the Dwarves' post-game victories against the darkspawn in the Deeproads (your example gives Behlen a reason to grant rights to the castless, and you can ask for help from the King/Queen as your boon). No real niggles here at all.
