Here's my order of preference and, briefly, why:

1. Mage - lots of roleplaying opportunity. How do I feel about the Circle, Jowan, templars, etc.? What's going to happen at Redcliffe?
2. Human noble - extra emotional investment with the Landsmeet quests.
3. City elf - political insight and some minor extra Landsmeet quest incentive.
4. Dwarf Noble/Commoner - extra insight into A Paragon of her kind.
5. Dalish elf - went over pretty meh with me. Has insight into Witch Hunt and possibly DAI but failed to engage me.

2. Mage (lots of options)
3. Dalish elf (and used the mod Dalish Mage)
4. City Elf
5. Dwarf Noble
6. Dwarf commoner

I enjoyed playing as a city elf, but in some ways, I feel like they got the shaft.  I mean they have to wait longer than any of the others before they finally get to return home, and even when they do, they spend very little time there.  Compare that to Orzammar, which when you combine it with the Deep Roads, just drags on and on.

Personal favorites are the dwarven origins but I think the best stories belong to the city elves and the human nobles. Though the DN gets strong points for political intrigue and insight into the schemes of the dwarven nobility. Least interesting story and thus least appealing origin to play for me is the dalish elf. You don't even get a little return later in the main quest to resolve things that happened to you like you do in the other origins. Heck Hawke in DA 2 interacts more with your clan than you do.

My favorite by far is the Dwarven Noble, followed by the Dwarf Commoner, Human Noble, Dalish Elf, Mage then City Elf.

The DN is such a deep and interesting beginning and I love the flexibility of the beginnings of the Dwarf Commoner. He was my first and only "evil" playthrough so far and taking that beginning good is just as satisfying. I like how the story changes with the HN origin. Everyone reacts to you well. Its a good playthrough for a good guy. I like the insight into the Dalish from the DE origin. I also like how you are mentioned alot by Merrill in DA2 from the origin. I didnt like the angle with Jowan and his chantry lady friend all too much, but I did enjoy they showed you the Harrowing and the flexibility with the Mage origin. As for the City Elf, it didnt really work for me. The elves have been putting up with abuse forever since Arlathan was destroyed if you have been reading the codex entries. Why rebel now given your acceptance of being cast as a lesser race for centuries, even if you or your family was violated? Didnt really make sense to me given what was said to me in codex entries, but Duncan being impressed with your gusto did. Its a ballsy thing to give "the man" the finger and you clearly DO show alot of skill doing what you do in the CE origin.

Despite my personal gripes with the last two, all were done exceptionally well and were very entertaining each in their own right. This game is pretty much aces in my book.

That's because the keeper moves the clan away to prevent anyone else from getting killed or hurt and DA lore has all Dalish following the instructions of their keeper or they face exile like Merrill in DA2, but Zathrian's clan is not the clan in the origin. It's a different one for the Dalish recruiting mission... although Zathrian says he knows your clan's keeper and likes her.

That's why there is no further resolution. Tamlen dying, you becoming a Grey Warden to save your life and the clan leaving the site for everyone's safety is the resolution. At least, I think that was a better resolution then the "what goes around, comes around" conclusion of the City Elf origin that you have to go into Denerim just to see.

In my opinion:

Best - Human noble
Worst - Circle mage.

I found the circle mage origin pretty bland and uninspiring. City Elf, Dwarf Noble and Dwarf commoner ware all pretty good. I've yet to do the Dalish one.

I keep on going back to the human noble. It draws me in, as I find it the most romantic/tragic of all the origins. I love the revenge story - building up personal hatred for Howe after losing everything to him, and the pleasure finally getting payback on the sod.

I live every single moment of the human noble story. I experience the sense of my young Cousland burning up with rage and horror after witnessing the attack on the castle; throwing himself at Howe's men with reckless anger, hardly caring if he lives or dies as long as he takes as many of them out as possible; the only thing keeping him from totally throwing away his life being his duty to protect his mother, and the burning desire to confront Arl Howe and  repay his treachery.

1. Human Noble: My go to Warden, female and in love with Alistair!
2. Dwarf Commoner: Really great, the return story get's me every-time.
3. Dwarf Noble: again an excellent story, with a real reason to side with Harrowmont.
4. City Elf: Not to bad, nice to see the Arl still in the dungeon!
5. Dalish Elf: meh, not really all that bothered for this origin.
6. Mage: Played once just to say I've played it, I just don't like playing as mages.

Best Self-Contained Story: City Elf or Dwarf Commoner. I'm a sucker for an underdog-kicks-butt story. Dwarf Commoner dropping the helmet in the Proving or City Elf taking Vaughn down - awesome!

Most Complex Branching Options: Dwarf Noble, Mage. There is a *lot* going on in Dwarf Noble, with some really great choices to try out on replays. I find Mage less interesting personally, but at least you can rat Jowan out or not.

Best Companions: Human Noble, Dwarf Commoner. Middle-aged kick-butt warrior mom? Yes, please! And Leske was a downtown Varric before Varric was Varric. (Same VA, I know.)

Best Non-Companion NPCs: City Elf, Dalish Elf. Both come with extensive families/clan members/neighbors that really root the PC into the world. Shianni ftw.

Best Villains: Human Noble, Dwarf Noble. Early introductions to Arl Howe and Bhelen Aeducan are terrific motivators for the main game.

Personal Favorites: My Brosca and my Mahariel are my favorite Wardens, so I have a soft spot for those Origins.

The origins of dragon age:

1.Dalish origin. While theplot arch itself isn’t very good the idea that you get tainted and have
to join the wardens is nice, being introduced to the eluvian early on
is also nice and the extended character gallery of the clan is probably the nicest in an orgin story. But the most important factor is: It let's you play the
game as a dalish. Which opens up a lot if interesting options like
”Does the maker destroy the homeland of those who refuse his
blessing” and other such memorable dialogue. The dalish elf also
offers the most unique dialogue options of any origin, which is what
the dwarf origins are sadly lacking (compared to the dalish that is).
The story of the dalish is awesome you really want to be one of them
and help them reclaim their lost lore and seek a new homeland.
The
only things I lack here is the option to be the reckless one along
with tamlen. Be the one who touched the mirror. And it would have been nice if Merrill had even remotly the same personality in both games, preferably the one from DA2.

2. dwarven
commoner. The dwarven noble's origin story is better on it's own but
the dwarven commoner picks up lots of points when you get back to
Orzammar and gets to reunite with your sister and free leske from the
carta. That brings them to about even, but why is the commoner first
then? Because it allows you as a castles to raise all the way from
there to paragon. And that kicks ass.

3. Dwarven noble.
Political intrigue, fratricide, and talking to commoners through your
shield-bearer, where do I sign. Unfortunately it fits very badly with
the later orzammar quests and lose a lot of points there. Why can't I
convince Bhelen to take me back as a lesser member of the house
again if I support him? Why can't I ask Harrowmont to stand down, he
is doing it for me after all. There should have been more options
here for the dwarven noble. My options are really holding on the the
grudge like a warhammer dwarf or turning my fathers throne over to a
tyrant, if a well a mannered one.
Oh and I would have liked to be able to plot alongside Behlen to kill trian rather than him betryaing me, "Our brother isnt fit to be king I kill him I get exiled you take the throne and spare my life"

4. Elvish commoner,
preferably played as female. There's few moments as nice as when Shianni bottles Vaughn, or when you offer him to take you but leave
the others, or when he tries to offer you to sell your cousin (it's
nice that you can, but I never could) and you tell him to go screw
himself. I just wish there was options to beat the crap out of Vaughn
but leave him alive. I dislike killing named characters and I woudl have loved to see his face when I showed up at the landmeet, without having to sell my cousin. It's nice to
get to come back to the alienage later but sadly most of the game is
very lacking unique dialogue for the alienage elf, most is shared with the elf mage, and in some cases with the dalish.

5. Human
noble, ok so Rob Stark goes of to war and leaves you in charge of
Winterfell, oh wait that's Fergus Cousland and Highever. And then
you are betrayed by Rose Bolton... Oh wait that's Rendon Howe. And no
one has any memorable dialogue and it's a revenge story the second
most tired cliché there is. It's nice that you can become king or
queen but it's really just a mention in the epilogue and one line in
the beginning of awakening. The only really good thing about the
human noble is in awakening when you get to say ”I'm standing right
here” when Howe's son and daughter are talking about you. Oh and a
mention should go for Nathaniel Howe who is a far more compelling
human noble than generic Cousland.

6. Magi, This might
actually be better than the human noble, but it's on the bottom for
one reason and one reason only. If you want to play a mage you are
FORCED to do this origin. And I hate that! It would have been so easy
to at least offer the dalish origin a mage version, and then with
nominal work you would have saved me from what is anyway the second
most boring origin story there is.
So we go through the harrowing,
this is nice. I really liked this part. Then we wake up and meet the
problem, Jowan, who turns out to be a paranoid SOB, but for some
reason I’m not allowed to accept that Jowan is paranoid but must
somehow react to it. Also he's an apprentice I'm a mage, should mages
really have friends amongst the apprentices? Ok then we meet Lily and
are forced between aiding the templars which I loathe doing because I
want nothing to do with organised religion even in games, or aid the
most tired cliché (remember revenge was only the second most tired
cliché) in the world, the forbidden love story. Why? I am a
mage and thus one of his teachers shouldn’t I just tell him to get
back in line and promise me not do blood magic, and then go sort
things out with Irving. It's a bureaucratic matter why are we solving
it with running around killing people and burning down walls? Also I
hate the idea of the circle, and it's ban on blood magic, I could
accept outlawing it's use for controlling people but knowledge should
never be forbidden. Especially not by religion. Where is my option to
just butcher all the templars? But I am forced to be a good little
mage if I want to be a mage. Couldn’t I at least have had the
option to be the blood mage who caused the plot in the origin story
myself, with it being Jowan and his silly love story only if I chose
not to take up blood magic myself?
Being forced into this is
a shame because being a mage opens up some interesting options like
going into the fade to save Conner yourself later on, but being
forced to be an obedient circle mage. No thank you.

WARNING: The Links given are to wiki pages that contain a MASSIVE amount of SPOILERS you have been warned, however this article itself contains very little if any spoilers at all.

Every origin that I have played: Mage, Human Noble, Dwarf Commoner, Dalish and City Elves.  Have all been moving in their own way as I could relate or rather, understand the lore and everything behind the character.

The Dalish are not unlike Native Americans during the 1700s and before.  They were threatened by a stronger and more dominant force and were struggling to hold on to their sacred traditions.  Wandering from place to place until a sudden mystery changes your life forever. The Mage lives in a world where having abilities like his doesn't make him the most popular person in the world.  (S)he is forced to forsake his/her family even before becoming a Grey Warden and is raised his whole life with others with very similar stories to his or her own.  The casteless Dwarf, born as the literal lowest of the low.  They are continually paying for the crimes of their ancestors while others revel in their Fathers and Grandfather's honour.  You live the life of either a well-meaning Merc who has a family to tend to, or a ruthless Thug who wants only to take over his/her gang and carve out a new way of life for their family.

The Elf native to an Alienage in the capital city of Ferelden.  Your life was pretty basic (I can still see a historic reference but seeing as it is unpleasant I will not elaborate).  You are to be married and it is a happy day for the close-knit group who are in some ways closer than the Dalish who have their freedom.  No where on the planet is Human rule more evident than in the Alienages that are apart of most of the major cities on Thedas and you and your kin must learn to adapt or die out in these trying times.

Now, although these were short stories (I feel I basically summarized most of the plot for the ones listed) they were amazing.  I felt like my Character's life was realistic in some aspects, with real world connections to be seen.  While I'm not one to cry, I did feel genuine disdain for the actions of Howe especially after I learned of his secret but bitter hatred for the Cousland Family.  I could see the flip side where it was the Human noble who was evil, in the Kendell family who's son was abusive and using of his power over others.  I do have my own preferences but I really do think that it is based off of preference.

In story, I like the Human Noble Origin best (and it is my farthest playthrough, I just recently delved into the Dragon Age series).  But there is something alluring about the Mage and his life, or the Common Dwarf and their struggle for either acceptance of survival (both would be preferable).  Truly I can't say if I have a worse, the shortest playthrough probably was the Dwarf Commoner (of the ones I've played) but seeing as your Origin affects how characters talk to you throughout the game, I don't really think I know for sure.

Human is the worst to me. I don't think it's as important as others do. It's got so many bases covered with other characters. Eamon, Alistair, Loghain, and Anora come off as the real movers and shakers of the main human noble plot, and Leliana knows more than you about the "Game" and politics. While Hawke makes it redundant even more in DA2. There's the better human noble story, imo.

I'd rather play something that isn't covered as well by other characters. Like Dalish or Duster dwarf. Wynne and Morrigan have the Circle and Apostates covered, respectively. Zevran has the City Elves. Oghren kind of represents dwarven nobility, even though he's lost his honor.

The worst for me was the mage.

If you ask for the mages to be free it won't happen. Don't ask for that reward it is non-canon.

There is no Best or Worst, but I do have a Favorite and Least Favorite origin.

Least Fave - Dalish Elf due to frustration at having to have OOG knowledge to obtain inheritance and information on parents. For a culture so tied with heritage, honor, etc, this pass or fail moment should not have been included, IMO. It should have simply been a part of the story included when you awaken in the wagon.

Fave? - Tie between Human Noble, Dwarven Noble, and female City Elf; three tales filled with emotion powered motivation that drive the story until the end.

I like the Mage origin. Lots of opportunity to be rude to people who otherwise command tremendous respect, plus you can be nasty to Jowan AND call his girlfriend a fat cow. And this is all before you are given the honour of betraying your only friend.

City Elf is okay, but I don't quite understand the love. "Oh, nasty human killed my husband and tried to rape me". Yeah, but he wasn't really your husband, was he? And you didn't get raped, so what's the big deal? Human Noble has it way worse than Sissy Elf.

@ Jordan - In case you missed it, the City Elf had her rightful, lawful wedding ruined, her fiancé slain, and her entourage raped and killed, except for her cousin. if being victimized is not enough for you, perhaps the problem does not lie in the story. Take the bribe, for this is almost the same coarse outlook that is written for her assailant.

Dalish Elf sounds kind of cool, with the whole ranger and nature thing.

I have played City Elf and Dwarven Noble and didn't like it much. To much politics for me.

It was an arranged marriage, a sham. She met her fiancé that very day. If my hand picked wife was raped and murdered on my wedding day, my only regret would be that I didn't get to consummate the marriage.

As I said, I feel that most people make it sound like something it's not. It's hardly a heart wrenching, tear jerking, oscar worthy story. Quite frankly, I was more upset when I burnt toast this morning.

I've played all of the origin stories but I have only played all the way through with I lady Dalish Elf and a male City Elf - i usually get sort of bored by ostagar because I've played it so much <.<

My favorite origin is definitely the Dalish elf, maybe I'm a bit biased because it was my first playthrough

Dwarven Commoner and City Elf are tied for me, I really like the views from the lowest of their designated societies and the lowest becoming great and just proving everyone wrong, that No, I'm not worthless.

Dwarven noble was pretty cool. Dwarven politics are interesting.

Human Noble and the mage origins are... not my favorite... I didn't like them much. the Mage story may be tainted by how slow the fighting was and for starting in the blasted fade (it was slow compared to all of the other classes, and they were all slow) also Jowan... just seemed like a whiny teenager who was not ready for the outside world. I felt he needed to grow up a bit .... He was not someone i felt should be OUT of the circle and i didn't want to help - I pretty much tell the first Enchanter every time because Jowan no, this is a bad idea.  I also didn't feel the friendship....

The issues with human noble? I don't know, it just didn't appeal to me, and was a bit too cliched... (also I don't really like playing human in fantasy settings in which i have a choice of different races) i only started this origin so i can get the achievement and so I could become king/queen (but i never made it that far)

@ Jordan - You continue to make my example for me; as empathetic as Vaughn himself. Small secret; arranged marriages do occur, and often work out quite well seeing that the parents involved generally wish the best for their child.

Also the story is quite reminiscent of the work of the late R. E. Howard, so Bioware is in fairly good company.

So no regrets; enjoy the toast. My sympathies for the I trouble; apparently can also lead to a lack of heart disease.

My favorite is probably the Human Noble Origin. I enjoy the family dynamic, and it definitely gives you a reason to really loathe Arl Howe. Not that there weren't plenty of reasons to begin with, but with the other origin stories he is just some generic evil sycophant with far too much power. Being a Human Noble shows how truly depraved and horrid the man really is. Plus, I enjoy the option of becoming King/Queen.

Next is probably the Dwarf Noble. Again, the family dynamic is fascinating but for completely different reasons. The politics and intrigue definitely make it feel real, and Gorim is much more delightful than he is in Denerim ("Dwarven crafts! Fine Dwarven crafts! Direct from Orzammar!). I always support Harrowmont when I return to Orzammar because of Bhelen's betrayal, but I will definitely have to try supporting Bhelen. Talk about being pragmatic.

The City Elf is next. I have played it both as a male and a female, and I definitely prefer the female because it creates more emotion, in my opinion. I never take the bribe from Vaughan, but I did last night on a new City Elf character just to see what would happen (with the intention of going back to a previous save). It made me feel so horrible, and I went back to my previous save and killed the wretch. I also like the opportunity to take all responsibility for everything and save poor Soris from being stuck in the dungeon for months. And this origin definitely creates a very strong hatred for Vaughan when you meet him in the dungeon in the other origins (I'm the Arl of Denerim! Sure, and I'm the Queen of Antiva.). I usually persuade him to give me the key to the money chest and then kill him. Everybody's happy then. :)

I suppose the Mage Origin is next. I enjoy being a mage, but there are definitely some areas of this story that are lacking. The initial Fade experience is fun to me (much more fun than the Sloth Demon Fade section, which is endless). Of course, it's blatantly obvious that Mouse is your true test, not that weak Rage Demon, so no real element of surprise. Jowan is so incredibly whiny, and I knew he was up to something the moment I met him (even having known about Redcliffe from other characters). The guy is just too shifty and paranoid. I do love the ability to flirt with Cullen if you're playing a female (and using mods to enhance that), but I wish the basis of getting the boot from the Circle was based around something stronger than whiny Jowan and naïve Lily.

Next is the Dwarf Commoner Origin. I like the fact that you can play your character as someone who is just trying to help his/her family (basically indentured servant), and Rica is very sweet. Mommy Dearest can go jump in the nearest lava pit, but I do like Rica. Leske is a fun character, but I hate that he ends up betraying you when you return to Orzammar as a Warden. I do love sticking it to the Dwarves in the Proving and showing that a "lowly" casteless is better than everyone else. However, this origin doesn't engage my interest or emotions as much as some of the others do. I'm usually just trying to get through it and move on, rather than really enjoying it.

Last is the Dalish Elf Origin. It's not bad by any means, but it just is the most boring to me (everyone has a least favorite). I don't have a lot of emotional reaction to it at all, the most being mildly saddened by Tamlen's disappearance. Honestly, the highlight of choosing this origin to me is meeting Darkspawn Tamlen later in the game. That was sad, and I hate having to kill him.
