Were you drifting in and out of consciousness whilst sending this message to me? I'm flattered if you were.

Perhaps; explains the typos. But at least I have a conscience.... ![]()
They are all great!! Wonderful to have all these choices.
I agree! My personal favorites are the human mage and elf mage origins because: tower, magic, books, cellar, crypt - stuff I love in RPGs, books, and movies.
Kudos to the Human Noble origin, which inspired me to install my first DAO mod ever: White Teeth. ![]()
the Mage story may be tainted by how slow the fighting was and for starting in the blasted fade (it was slow compared to all of the other classes, and they were all slow)
The fighting in the non-mage origins can indeed be a bit slow, but mages? They take out whole groups of enemies faster than a warrior or rogue can kill a single enemy. Starting right in the Fade - with Flame Blast or Cone of Cold - and speeding up even more with Fireball or Walking Bomb a few spiders later. And if your mage isn't into fighting then you can leave the fighting to someone else: the mouse bear can do the Fade, Lily and Jowan can do the spiders and the basement.
I actually like the way the fighting is structured. I gives you a chance to find your feet and to start the slow process of getting acquainted with the strengths and weaknesses of your newest mage, without mandatory companions getting in the way (except for two minor occasions in the basement).
If the fighting is slow going then perhaps you aren't quite in the spirit for the kind of mage you've created, and perhaps you are using them like another sort of mage or like another sort of fighter.
A while ago I created a Sith apprentice type of mage and started her on the fire line of spells. I played her through the origin and found her underwhelming - not because the spell choice was bad, but because previously I'd always used the Cone of Cold plus Walking Bomb gambit and so I had a totally wrong mindset. A couple of days ago I replayed that origin to check something out and I was completely floored: Githany obliterated the opposition much faster than my CoC/bomb-based nukers, and she reached Ostagar in less than forty minutes. Obviously, the mindset problem had been repaired in the meantime...
also Jowan...
Full agreement there. I've always found him rather annoying. Also, both of the choices that you get - being Jowan's accomplice, or tattling on him and Lily - are a bit iffy.
Apart from that I really like the mage origin. It reminds me of other mage origins in other worlds - Jedi/Sith academies, Trudy Canavan's Magician's Guild and so on. It was crafted with attention to detail, lots of humour, and amazing voice acting. Perhaps more consistently so than other origins.
Favorite: Female City Elf
Least Favorite- Magi
Though I haven't done a Female noble yet so IDK if that changes anything.
I haven't played DC yet, but I've played through the rest. As for the ones I have played:
1: (Female) City Elf. I played her initially as cheery, bordering on hyperactive, and while a little nervous, very much looking forward to her wedding. Then, well... yeah. Slaughtering my way through the entire estate in my wedding dress was extremely satisfying, and I loved Soris and Shianni. Also, I got the deathblow animation on Vaughan. Chopped his head off! Howe's going to get much the same for daring to mess with my people.
2: (Elf) Mage. This is the first origin I played. Dropped in the action straight off, and the atmosphere of the tower was chilling. There's always that whispering in the background, Templar Bran alludes to people jumping out windows and dying, an apprentice disappeared literally a week ago.... It's a bit railroady, which occasionally jars me out of the story, but it gets across a narrative of constant threat, trust, and betrayal, which carried out through the rest of the game. Also, as an elf mage, I was very much engaged in the quests - the Circle was his family, the Dalish were his idols, Jowan was his best friend and Connor is both who he was and what he could become, the city elves are his people. Everywhere he goes (except Orzammar, which was just byzantine and frustrating), it's personal.
3: Dwarf Noble: There's something eminently satisfying about being able to be a flat out savvy bastard from the beginning. I played the game well, and while having played before I knew Bhelen was vicious, and I did want Trian dead, I didn't expect him to off Trian and blame it on me. However, dwarven politics in general just frustrates me, so I wasn't as into the character as I was my CE and Mage. I rather suspect that my Aeducan was more angry that her little brother outplayed her and that Frandlin Ivo backstabbed her, than actually sad Trian was dead. I got attached to the idea of the secret romance between Gorim and F!Aeducan as well, which made it sad when I remembered Gorim gets married in Denerim.
4: Dalish Elf: Not a bad origin, just not as impressive. I don't like being the pity Warden, but the sense of family and attachment is very present. I really got the feeling that I was among a family, Dalish against shemlen, and I wanted to stay with my people. Tamlen was an idiot, but a nice idiot, and I was pissed at Duncan for not saving him too.
5: Human Noble. Urgh. Cloyingly nice family, giant rats (really?), and Duncan railroading you into being a Grey Warden felt so hamfisted I couldn't get into it at all. This Warden never got past Ostagar.
Human noble was among the best i played! though short, Runner up would be dwarf commoner
Not counting Dwarf Noble since I never finished it
Best: City Elf (Lady side was the most compelling but I wouldn't say that makes it better than the dude side).
Worst: Human Noble. Booooring.
I've played every origin story, and although my favourite warden is a human mage, the best stories were city elf and both dwarven stories. Human noble also great.
For me, the worst was dalish elf, and the mage origin was... just ordinary, I think.

I've grown fond of the city elf and also the human noble. I like playing a mage so I use a mod that lets me be a mage for either of those origins. I think they are both well done. The dwarf noble is well done as well. The mage is the worst though it does give you a bit more insight into mage life and the harrowing (which is kind of a joke for all the drama they give it). I had to get the mod just so I never had to do a mage origin again. It's that awful.

The one I liked best was the City Elf origin. I found the others meh but the one that I got bored with the most was Dwarf Noble.
1. Dalish
2. Magi
3. City Elf
4. Dwarf Commoner
5. Human Noble
6. Dwarf Noble
Every origin got something i like and dislike but neither of the nobles really interest me that much. Magi got the whole harrowing part and just the general feel of being a mage and learning about being a mage that i just love. Dalish because i've always loved playing the outsider, the hunted and being hte one that have to make due with little.
Female human noble and male city elf are easily my favorites, though the former edges out on the latter for me. I honestly do not care for the Dalish origin, and the Circle of Magi even less. The casteless dwarf origin is more interesting to me than the noble, but I'm just not a fan of dwarves in general and don't really bother to play one unless I'm playing as a total bastard.
My top two favourite is Human Noble and Dwarf Noble.
The rest are varying degrees of okay.
Mage origin is probably my least favourite.
I think the fact that Jowan is encountered there is another point against it. The less I see of that man, the better.
I'm not fond of either Jowan or the First Enchanter in the Mage Origin, but overall I think it's a good origin-most of them are.
The only issue I ever had with any of the origins is when i made my Dwarf Commoner without a tattoo.I got a message from the game,"For the full Dwarf Commoner experience it is best that you have a tatoo that reflects your origin"
I'm like, "if I don't want a bloody tattoo I shouldn't have anyone tell me to have one" .It's not mandatory, but that did irk me a bit.
Needless to say, I haven't spent a lot of of time on my DC playthrough lately.
hmm.
I like the city elf or human noble the best.
I like the dalish elf one also because of the carry over, all tho its not a lot.
worst for me is probably the dwarfs. but im not sure its because of the origin it's self, but rather i cant do my head cannon of the dwarf in me head with how the dwarf origin stands right now.
Played them all with Dwarf Commoner and Dalish being the worse. Human Noble and City Elf(particularly the female version) were amazing. The other 2 were meh.
I would say the human noble and city elf are my favorite with mage close behind
Not sure what my least favorite would be
