Basically OP, you want's class taunts/celebrations? I like the idea.

Ex: A mage calling down lighting, a sword and shield fighter, drumming his shield.

...As long as none of them say, "Show me your moves!"

(I don't have anything particularly against Smash Bros, just... not in this context)

Smash Bros? Never played it. =]

Meh, never really got a LotR feel from DA, more King Arthur.

I so hope this idea is used. Yep I'd get a thrill out of s simple pose or bad ass animation of the character doing something distinctive before he heads into battle.

For western fans, there is nothing more iconic that Jose Wales spitting before all hell breaks loose.

Although how would you approach this kind of thing? I can picture a good warrior or "good" rogue touching his weapon to his forehead in some honorable bow, I could picture one of you evil bastard warriors or rogues licking their blade and leaving a little blood or something, showing your willingness to shed blood.

But what would a mages little pose be? Just curious, my imagination doesn't allow me a bad ass mage iconic  pose at the moment.

edited: oh and damn you OP, that 30 second clip made me want to watch all those movies again.

Eh, the whole unexpected hero going on a journey, the uniting of old allies, and saving the world from a pure evil entity, lot's a smaller aspects that are similar or identical. Certainly not a tale unique to Lord of the Rings either at it's time of conception, but Origins draws a lot from it as well as other popular tales from various genres, all good stories do. It's how well you spin your version that determines how far away it seperates itself from the pack.

Heh, well, suffice it to say I think it's possible for taunts to be pretty tacky and out of place. That's not to say they can't also be done well.

Also, though, if they go too overboard with these kinds of things, it may end up being like DA2's version of the "let's all get in formation and ignore whatever action you just gave us" fun from DAO.

So wait, you want to force the player to perform an animation before he or she becomes responsive to the command? Ludicrous.

I would expect this to be a Kordaris post; he's like Rubbish Hero, but a better troll.

No one said that.. It was never once, in any form suggest that it slow down combat or even be performed every combat. Quite the opposite, it was even suggested to be a very rare thing that bring some flavor to the character, not something done so often it is annoying or become a regular rote part of the game.

Because bowing to an opponent wouldn't slow anything down.  You can bow while you move, and it would look totally realistic.

Seriously now,, no one suggested it be before every combat. More than likely it would be scripted or in the cinematics a few times to give your character .........a little character or dramatic flair.

Regardless, not worth arguing about, I can understand you don't want anything slowing you down, especially when even a couple seconds means the difference between getting of a stun on a a mage caster or missing the chance. I can see such thing might get annoying if they had real game consequenses.

I just don't see such a suggestion of dramatic flair being implemented as some move your character does over and over to the point of annoyance. It would be the occasional cool move he does that makes you think your charater is friggin awesome.

Way to be a downer in an overly positive thread, Maverick. I quite like Rubbish Hero's idea, I love those little details that distinguish and set characters and situations apart from one another. Not sure what it would take coding-wise to make it happen, or if it would have any impact on the swiftness of combat (and if anyone REALLY wants fast combat there are an assortment of hack-n-slash games on the market out there), but I think it would add a nice little touch.

Nowhere was it said otherwise.  The logical conclusion is before in-game combat.

The only good way to implement this is in lieu of cast times, where the player is "rooted" regardless, which melee do not have.

Overly positive thread?  I take it you did not see the (thinly) veiled insults in Rubbish's post.

It has nothing to do with "hack-n-slash" games (though, if you ask Rubbish, that is all DA2 will be) and for the gameplay to feel "swift."  Control responsiveness is not intrinsic to any genre, merely good design.  Why do you think one of BioWare's tenants for DA2 was to enhance this very portion of the game?  To implement something that freezes your character for the sole purpose of a little flare would entirely undermine this.

And if the suggestion merely affects cinematics, forgive me if I don't feel "hey, let's make cinematics better" is a mind-blowingly brilliant and new idea.

... great suggestion... the elimination of the man-walk is definitely appreciated, and more natural animations do add to that bit of immersion we oh so crave...

but you're still a jerk, rubbish hero, and please stop talking like a dumb half-giant... it's insulting to us who actually had to learn english...

It's basically a request for an opening equivalent to the finishing blow moves. An opening flourish, as it were. Some people found finish blows a bit annoying after you see them a few times, though, particularly leaping onto an ogre dramatically in slowmo when there are still enemies nearby. And I don't really want my character to be the chump who wastes his time bowing to darkspawn, either, so let's stick to more reasonable gestures like RH's Aragorn example.

That's true, at least for gaming, probably revolutionize  genre.  Viggo Mortensen improvise, not Peter Jackson say "Do it  actor!". Also amazing interesting fact, when  King Theoden  do Rohan dramatic charge save city, his actor idea to clatter sword against spears of front men, not Peter Jackson, improvisation.  Game character not improvise because not real people. Polygon no think. Unable to suggest.

I agree, what's with the faux-imbecilic prose RH? You can obviously write normally. I've read posts where you have done so.

The "little touches" are my favorite parts of cutscenes. Morrigan blowing out the candle was one, Teagan getting bumped by someone running past as he watches the destruction of the Archdemon is another, but my favorite by far is Anders shaking out his hands after killing the darkspawn with the Flame Blast when you first meet him. I don't know why I love it so much but I just do. It's such a mundane thing...maybe that's exactly what's so great about it. It goes from the fantastical to the totally practical.
