it is always good if characters don't all use the same animation/movement sequences

I agree! In fact, we have characters who can not only walk in their own way (gone is the "man walk" of DAO's female characters! Yay!) but have their own idle animations and such. It's a brave new world, my friend. :)

I love that! These kind of small details matter so much. Cool that you guys are picking up on that and managing to implement it.

Anyway. I like what is suggested here in terms of the more subtle ways of engaging in battle as done by Viggo. In general I think subtle can be very tasteful. I think Dragon Age is one of the first games where I feel that there was a sort of direction towards being more subtle. No mega oversized weapons and the armors actually looked believable most of the time and even if some weapons were some times quite big they had simple design and their function was straight forward. Personally I would take this even further but compared to other games like Final Fantasy (which of course is a totally other game) I think Dragon Age still presents a much more interesting graphic design which I think has to do with taste, I think Dragon Age was tasteful. That is of course very personal, taste is like an ass, everyones smell different ;). Of course there was the massive amounts of blood but actually I think when slashing somebody with a sword there is quite a lot of mess going on. Anyway. I can't really point out a clear suggestion but in general I would love to see even more subtleties in the game, just as a suggestion. Things that differentiate and adds to the reality of the game. Differentiate in the way of for example adding individual walks as Gaider just said, and subtlety in the sense of being simple but with finesse in design and animation.

Basically, I like designs and ideas that have a certain subtlety to them. A kind of functionality or that the idea is anchored in something emotionally or story driven - engaging, like Aragorns subtle blessing of his sword that is talked about here. These kind of details adds so much to a games "feel". For example to me a game like World of Warcraft has nothing to offer in terms of "tasteful" design, functional design, subtlety, reality striving etc.

Again, if we are talking about Lord of the RIngs the movie. I would love to see a game that is as neat as that in terms of design and animation. Dragon Age was one of the first games that I played that had some of that neatness.

Thanks,

I like the idea, but it may get missed if attacking options implement instantaneously, a battlecry or oath whilst charging in may be easier to recognize.

Yay! Can I ask about armor? Will the ladies get the same mannish/streetwalker-ish armor as we saw in the original Dragon Age? I love the game, but felt like I was either an old lady (in the Circle of Magi robes) or some kind of hooker. A happy medium would be awesome! (And a hide helm option. Those hats were bad.)

I would like to say thank you as well, Mr. Gaider, for writing us such amazing romances! (Valen was the best male character I have found. Ever. <3)

You know how when characters go into battle they make a comment such as "Die foul beasts!" Or something along those lines? Mannerisms too would also add character. I watch Lord Of Rings, it's like Dragon Age but alot better. You see it too probably but not remember this bit too well.

At end of movie when Uruk-hai fight Fellowship, when Viggo Mortensen about to engage  them in combat he doesn't just run up to them and start swinging like generic action hero man, he does a small mannerism thing were it  looks like he is blessing his sword without actually saying anything. This is a good small detail, should be stolen for Dragon Age 2 as sporadically used (as in not constantly) pre-baked animations to give characters more physical character outside of class.

Excellent post.

A bit like Russell Crowe's character Maximus in Gladiator, where he rubs a little of whatever he's standing on between his fingers before a major battle?

Mannerisms/idle animation = good suggestion. Gives it more character, more realistic. I quite like it.

Making DA2 a clone of LOTR would be terrible - but do love the scene near the end of Fellowship of the Ring when Arragorn is surrounded by orcs. He has this sardonic smile that basically says 'ok, who's first?'

You see it in a lot of movies - would be good to see in DA2. It's why I like like Zevran and Oghren - they love fighting!

I like the OP's idea. These small sort of things make a heck of a lot of difference.

It'll a lot better than what our companions are shouting during combat, that's for sure.

i like the idea too, or even after the battle, like victory poses, but also agree it should be used sparringly.

i am just worried that if it happens to be BEFORE the battle, and it's a surprise one or a particularly difficult one I would be screaming "NPC! Stop doing that/playing with your sword and just KILL/STAB that darkspawn!"

Sturm Brightblade always saluted monsters before he fought them.  I loved the Dragonlance books.  This should totally be stolen.

Same. It cracks me up every time. It might be a subtle nod to the DnD spell "burning hands," I don't know, but it's funny.

So wait, you want to force the player to perform an animation before he or she becomes responsive to the command? Ludicrous.

You know, lots of RTS games have similar "flavor" animations that don't slow down combat at all.

guys, seriously, let's also have rush hour-style fight scenes. I'm going to start a petition and I expect you all to sign it.

Hope it wasn't replaced with some sort of "sexy walk" straight out of Poser nonsense, though Posted Image

I'd love it if my Hawke would scream "ARE YOU M***********G READY?!" every time he sees an enemy. Hell, scratch that. Everytime he draws a weapon.
That would keep me on edge.
And I'd be happy if BW brought back the flourish command from KotOR. It was a bit lame that I couldn't run through Denerim without flailing with my sword in a cool manner all the time.

If I even hear the words uttered Of "MY PRECIOUS," In a DA game I'm killing myself. I will hold chris and david and mary to that decision. Remember all my death is in your hands keep LOTR out of DA. Atleast the item controlling someone to the point of preciousness! ECK!

Nice idea by the OP. These sort of character devices are always an effective little shortcut to making characters seem a bit more human.

Besides, warriors and soldiers have always been a superstitious bunch - offering short prayers and blessings before battle. Makes it all seem a bit more tense, like the outcome is in no way guaranteed.

To me DA is alot better story then about a damn ring, sorry........David put alot better story out there and I hope he keeps it going.

Yes DA is better than LOTR. Gaider is better than Tolkien. And Duke Nukem Forever is coming in your local videogame store next week... No offense: Gaider and DA:O are great. But comparing DA:O with LoTR is offensive.

Btw, love the LoTR's books but the films are garbage. That's part of the reason why I do not like DA:O artstyle. But the mannerism thing is really a good idea (if it's not redundant). They allready made something on the like with the blood stain on the nose thing.
