Ha-HA! I'VE FIGURED IT ALL OUT, BIOWARE!
I've concluded that they're essentially a very advanced virus. Darkspawn aren't required to eat like other organisms; viruses aren't required to consume like organisms. Darkspawn must transform other creatures in to darkspawn "factories" in order to reproduce; viruses must transform other cells in to virus "factories" in order to reproduce.
Now, of course, their origin is still a mystery (Is the Chantry's version correct, or are they a direct creation of the Old Gods, or has the truth yet to be seen, or did they just simply appear one day?).
