Rubbish Hero, you are very humorous ^_^

Back to topic. What I really care about is boring empty space, like large areas where you have to run around back and forth, and repeated loading screen. Because during those time, I worry about life, like I should be doing something better with my time. WoW has a lot of this "empty space" and ME1 also.

I hope at least the story and characters compensate for the rest

i think that is the new emphasis... character development and more focused story-telling... i don't think you will be disappointed unless you keep nit-picking at the games changes...

Regardless, the way a story is handled is certainly an element of RPGs, certainly one of the key elements. I don't think you need a game to be complex in order to be an RPG, if anything the evolution of video games has been changing the way it can be handled. I think the change in 'feel' is a lot more about the interface and less about the core of the game.

While it's true that an RPG can be of ranging complexity, you can't honestly say that the 'feel' of the game is about the interface. The interface is a superficial visual graphic representing certain information used for providing real-time feedback to the player, contrary to the fundamental game mechanic which seperates your Prince of Persias from the FF series.

I've been playing various forms of
RPGs since I was 11, so don't get holier-than-thou with me with your
juvenile dichotomy about console players being stupid and PC players
being geniuses. I've experienced the full breadth, used to screw around
with tabletops and even MUDs. Can't get nerdier than that. Even so, fond
as I am of the genre...inventory systems, combat micromanagement,
character customization and what-have-you are not the end-all be-all of
an RPG, just how ends tended to be accomplished.

I've got no
problem with having an almost RTS-like feel to things in RPGs, but it's
just a style of gameplay. I suppose you can enjoy that sort of thing,
but it's no mystery why others could find it pretty tedious. The thing
can certainly be streamlined or made less time-consuming. Consoles have
been getting bigger-budget and better for a long time and they've
certainly managed to improve on 'fun' for me, people have different
tastes.

All in all, it's personal preference . I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the claim that on average console gamers, even of the same age group, tend to be less proficient in games however, as well as liking less 'intelligent' entertainment than their PC-playing counterparts. All factors point in the same direction; consoles: streamlined, cheap, cost effective; what's the most cost-effective strategy? Lowest common denominator. This is without the somewhat arguable lack of precision of a controller, and the fact that catering everything to the young audience is the most sound business tactic, because of their 'compulsive buy' tendencies and undiscriminating taste. All in all, on average, an obtuse experience that's comparable to a summer explosion movie in it's information density.

I won't judge right off the bat, but you are, at least partially, (and indirectly) admitting that you want a dumbed down experience. 'The thing can be streamlined or made less time-consuming'...why? That'd reduce the complexity of your experience, making problems you have to confront in the game simpler/easier. That'd also reduce the pleasure from solving the problems if you don't get burnt out and give up on them, which is why people like me and the OP are objecting to this new direction. And citing all the nerdy things you did is irrelevant, especially if you only 'screwed around' with them, and none of them stuck.

These haters seem to forget there's such a genre as ACTION RPG.

VTMB, Fable, Fable 2, Morrowind, Oblivion, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, ME2, Alpha Protocol are all ACTION RPGs and most of them were great.

And besides, PC combat is unchanged so I don't get what the whining is about, only the console version is somewhat changed.

This topic is veering a bit too far into a conversation about what constitutes an RPG in general. As general, some of the back and forth between two forumites is getting a little too snarky. It is possible to disagree without personal attacks. Finita la musica.
