Incidentally, with people talking about not being able to assign Alora's thief skills, I find it hard to believe anyone would be unaware of Gatekeeper and Shadowkeeper, two excellent tools for modifying BG and BG2 game content.
For example, even if you rush to get Coran as erly as you can, his Thief skills are still assigned in an idiotic manner (all Stealth, so much that he's well past 100%). Gatekeeper allows me to change that, much the same as DAO's No Follower Auto-Level mod, which I absolutely could not live without.

I use the Sword Coast Stratagems choose NPC proficiencies and skills tweak, if I want to choose all the proficiencies for an NPC myself. But lately, I often don't install it in my campaigns, as it gives NPC's more a life of their own if you didn't control their previous experience before they met you, often choosing the TOB-style NPC's tweak from BG2 Tweaks instead.

If you're not wanting to install a large mod, Level 1 NPCs from Gibberlings three also does the trick re distribution of attributes.
