This is going to sound pretty bad, but hey, I'll give it a shot.

I just got through playing SoA, and the game froze. Right at the point that I assume directly sends you to ToB.

The program just stopped responding.

Closed the windows and tried again (luckily, had a final save pre-irenicus battle), went to select ToB to play, and *bam* froze again.

Uninstalled and reinstalled the newest patches for both games, and didn't get much further.

Instead of freezing, when selecting ToB to play from the main menu (after first popping the disc into the tray), I get a message that says "No disc in drive Please place expansion cd in drive".

Well, that's the one I'm running, and the damn thing isn't working. I also had this problem when trying to enter the watcher's keep in SoA. I just dismissed it and played through.

I'd like to play the rest of BGII, so do you guys have any help?

BTW, if it matters, I think I'm operating on W7.

BTW, I saw that quite a few people had the same problem on the old bioware forums, but what little advice was given there didn't help me.

You don't install patches for SoA and ToB, only the latter.

Maybe you should say what you've already tried, so people know.

Well, like I said, and incantatar corrected, I've gotten the patch.

I believe after installation, I ran the game in compatability mode with no problem (because during initial configuration, I was lost trying to fix the graphics).

The problem is NOT the disc itself, which is in pristine condition, nor do I believe anything is wrong with the optics or readers or anything. The computer is fairly new.

I was hoping that with so many people having that problem a while ago, a common answer was found for the issue.

Well, if you are on Vista or Win 7 you shouldn't install the game to c:\\program files. If there's a common answer, that's it.

If the problem remains you can try opening the file baldur.ini and checking the [Alias] section to see if the CD5:= path is correct (it should point to the cd5 directory in your installation directory, assuming ToB can't be installed in non-full mode).

Hmm... This might be where the problem lies.

I can't find baldur.ini at all.

Most of the BG files did go into program files though.

Should I move them, or uninstall, then install again? (*is really not wanting to lose his saves)

You can look among the "compatibility files" (described e.g. here) for your saves and probably the baldur.ini file. But you'll probably have the least hassle if you back up your saves and reinstall the game to another directory.

As I remember, you can uninstall but keep all your saves and characters, so that won't be a problem. But not to state the obvious, do what Irrbloss said and back them up. Cases like these, a clean, full install is the way to go.

Just as a note, if you've got mods that randomize items, add items, or modify inventory slots, your saved games will reflect the mods, so after you install, if you don't reinstall that same set of mods, you might get some unexpected results from the those save games.
