Ok, this thread is a step by step instruction guide for those vanguards who want to complete one of the hardest challenges in the game: Killing 2 YMIR and 2 LOKI mechs without using cover. I realize this won't be a very popular guide as there's only a fraction of the community playing a vanguard on the PC, and even a smaller fraction that will bother wasting time (and nerves) to do this. However, I've been requested to post this so here it is. This guide is not bulletproof and it might take you several tries until you manage. If you follow this guide, the reason for Shepard's death during the fight will generally be due to charge bugs or AI problems. Timing is also crucial so the steps have to be completed with precision and without wasting time as Shepard will be under constant fire. Surviving is a small miracle so you have a satisfaction guarantee if you do obtain this achievement.

Please note: I will be using the Claymore as the weapon of choice and Destroyer specialization for this fight so number of shots and relative damage will vary depending on your specific set up. With scimitar you'll be able to do more damage to shields and less damage to armor. With eviscerator you'll be able to squeeze in more shots than claymore, and you'll be using melee more often. Keep those differences in mind and adapt them to the guide as you follow the steps.

Your squadmate of choice will be Garrus (for obvious reasons) and somebody else. I prefer to take Miranda cause of the bonus weapon damage. However, loyal Grunt/Tali/Legion will also work as they all have great abilities to either tank or keep the mechs distracted. Combat drone works miracles for distracting an YMIR in crucial situations.

To prepare, familiarize yourself with the terrain and the timing of spawns. You will notice that the left mech gets dropped off first, followed by the right mech. The LOKI mechs which will be on the top ramp will spawn as soon as you get in certain range (charging the left mech triggers their spawn immediately).

For a bonus power you should take either Barrier, Fortification or GSB unless you want to use medkits. Max this ability out as you will rely heavily on it for the first few seconds of the fight. GSB provides weapon damage, so I personally prefer to go with that.

General pointers:

- Learn to hide behind an YMIR and use it as cover to protect yourself from the other mech's machine gun. That happens best if you have an unprotected mech that you can charge repeatedly. Charge recharges as quickly as the mech is in ragdoll so in theory if you don't encounter charge bugs and if you aren't in a really confined space, you can keep this limbo going on forever. Steps are charge unprotected mech > damage the protected mech > hide behind unprotected mech > rinse and repeat.
- Don't use squad cryo, especially on this mission. The mechs are at a slope. If they get frozen you can't hide behind them cause they roll down the slope towards the crates and it makes your situation more difficult than it should be.
- Send your squad ahead first so they take the attention of 1 of the mechs while you deal with the other. Note that the one you charge first will always have its attention on Shepard.

  • My strategy involves charging the mech on the left as it gives you a window of opportunity to dispose of the LOKI mechs immediately after.

  • The steps are as follows: Before you trigger YMIR encounter activate bonus ability (GSB). Put inferno ammo on carnifex/shotgun/sniper. Move squad in between the 2 YMIR mechs before they get dropped off. As soon as the left YMIR is dropped from above, use squadmate abilities to damage it and charge.

  • After the charge you can get off 3 shots with claymore and reload trick. While doing the shots, position yourself so that the YMIR you are shooting is between you and the other YMIR. Make sure you don't get toasted by machine gun fire. Make the shots count by scoring headshots. With maximised weapon damage (no recon hood) 3 shots go well into the mech's armor. You should be able to do something similar with the other shotguns too.

  • After the 3rd shot you get hit by a rocket and you get staggered. Following that, keep shooting the YMIR until your shields break from its machine gun fire. I have time for 1 shot with the claymore. Then, using the 1 second invulnerability, quickly target the LOKI mechs (they should be to your left if you have positioned yourself correctly) which should be spawned and charge them to replenish shields.

  • The LOKI mech you charge will be stunned. Use the time dilation to close distance to the other LOKI and elbow/shoot him to stun it as well.

  • Your shields will hold the machine gun fire from the YMIR but you have to take out at least 1 LOKI quickly or you'll die cause of too much damage. I prefer to take out 1 LOKI and remove the armor of the 2nd so that it is vulnerable to charge. Whatever you do, do not kill both LOKI as you won't have a target to charge nearby and replenish shields. Taking out the armor of the LOKI you're about to charge helps because you won't take damage from it, at least not for a short time.

  • By that time charge is ready to use so I charge the unprotected LOKI replenishing my shields again. The YMIR's machine gun fire is over and your squadmates should be dead at this point (maybe apart from Grunt).

  • Switch to hand cannon w/ inferno ammo, start descending down the ramp and aim at the YMIR you charged first. By that time it should have about half its armor left. Descending from the LOKI's position, maneuver around to dodge rockets coming at you and keep firing to strip the mech's armor. You earn brownie points if you don't get staggered, because by the time you start descending and your squadmates are dead, both YMIRs will be locked on Shepard. It's crucial therefore to remove defences of 1 mech so you can use it as temporary cover.

  • Generally, if you are successful, the mech's armor should be stripped by the time charge is ready to use. Charge and switch to shotgun.

  • Start playing limbo with the other mech by damaging it and charging the unprotected one, then using it as cover.

  • Depending on the ammount of ammo you have left you might have to switch weapons. If you are lucky (and score headshots constantly) you won't have to.

  • By the time you strip the protected mech's defences you have the option to headshot one of the YMIRs with the carnifex causing a glorious explosion that will wipe out both of them. Just make sure you're not anywhere near.

Enjoy and record your achievement if you can. It's much more satisfying than beating the game on Insanity.

Video of the outlined strategy is here.

Nice guide - gonna give it a try, but not with the 'oldschool' Vanguard  - the new generation Vanguard is arriving; Adept with Claymore. I'm familiarizing myself with this new breed of close combat fighting, haven't faced a YMIR yet. I guess I start with one (Jacob's LM I think) and see how it works out.

If I can do it (I doubt I will, but I never believed it to be possible to fight like this with an Adept, so who knows)

I'll record the fight if I find a way to pull this of - your guide should be very helpful.

You might want to give the Adept another try - I know your always looking for a new challenge. The way you handle the Claymore should make is quite easy. :D

Cheers

The problem with the adept is they can't regenerate their shields quickly enough to withstand enough punishment. And they can't close distance in an instant to take advantage of hiding behind an unprotected YMIR for example. It might work if you took Energy Drain as bonus power and focused all your squad power on 1 YMIR while Energy Draining the other to keep yourself alive. It would be -very- difficult to do though. Nice video by the way.

As for the guide, thanks, I'll give it a try and see how it goes.
