I agree with a lot of folks here. I liked--nay, loved--the Fade the first time around. I was playing a mage who was having her little Heroic BSOD moment during the Broken Circle quest, the puzzles were fresh, it was great. Subsequent playthroughs....BLEAAAARGGGGH.

@Aerig: First of all, if "people" say you don't dream in color, it's untrue :) The same visual association cortices of your brain are active while you dream in REM sleep as if you're awake. Same parts of your brain that "see" color light up. As for the Fade in DA:O, it's quite likely that people in Thedas simply don't dream the same way we do in real life. And since the Fade actually exists in a sense and we're told the spirits there aren't too creative, it makes sense that it'd be both unsettling and strangely dull.

Not that I want the Fade to still look like that in DA2. Color, dangnabbit! Is it so much to ask? XD

i like the fade episodes. remembers me of being trapped in shadowruns (pen and paper) astral space a few times.

Graphics are close to moving in a Dali painting. Nice.

But i understand those who state that the "lost in the fade" chapter is a little too long.

I didn't mind the Fade, but after reading the Fade portion in Gaider's 'The Calling', I'm kinda hoping that they make it resemble the description in the book (particularly the dreamscape of those trapped there: if I read/interpreted it properly, which is supposed to resemble/simulate locations in the 'real world')

The fade for me was okay, i have no problem with the blur effect, but if it is in DA2, perhaps make it extremely wierd and

wacky, like as said previously, chairs and tables on the roof and the floor is the ceilieng, trees, some rivers, people walking on thier hands, more floating objects, you meet a guy that can only speak like a monkey etc....

Realy, REALLY wierd stuff, yaknow.

I am replaying the game after not playing it for 8 months and I usually like to explore the world and do the little side quests so I can get the most out of the game but this time I said "F this!" and rushed through the whole Magi quest.without getting the Sword and such.

That and the Deep roads really annoyed the living crap out of me.

The fade visual effects is what drove me nuts. Eyeballs are not meant to be hurt.

The fun thing about the Fade is that the devs could technically do whatever they want in there, because its all a dream world. Go walking down a path in a forest and it turns into a dark alley, a cat jumps out, you turn to run, go around a corner and BAM! 30' tall clown laughing at you like the Happy Gilmore mini-golf scene. It'd be fun.

The Fade killed me....when i saw it is in Awakening too, i wanted to shoot myself! I just couldn't stay 30 min straight to look at it or my eyes would hurt.

As for the deep roads, besides the spiders, i really liked it! It's like you travel to a lost world...

No Fade unless it makes completely no sense and one room/island is completely different from another much like the Shivering Isles.

More Deep Roads with the fighting Darkspawn theme song.

You fix the fade by omitting it.

Argh, no more fade, please.... It felt so dull both in DAO and Awakening....

It's a cool concept, but visually it left a lot to be desired. I was really disappointed, since it was a realm of dreams, I imagined a place that looked like a combination of beautiful dreams and terrifying nightmares with a visual style reminiscent of something like Pan's Labyrinth. Or even something similar to areas like Ashenwood or the Shadow Realm in Mask of the Betrayer, places that had a much more evocative atmosphere and identity than the Fade.

I hope they don't ditch the Fade concept entirely - it has a lot of potential to be interesting with the demons and all, and the lore there was certainly much more interesting than anything a bland place like Ferelden had to offer.

Really a missed opportunity there, and why I feel that it has potential. For a place where pretty much anything you imagine can become a reality, The Fade seems pretty dull.

OMG yes! I loved Shivering isles, i loved Sheogorath and how Mania and Dementia worked. Played it twice. Best expansion ever made, it had everything, from craziness to plot twisting.

I think they should just send you to the Black City thats the only thing that would be interesting in the fade... it would explain what really happened to the maker and all the rest of the history that shaped the main beliefs in the game... I think when you encourted the Cult of Andrasta... fail spelling... they should send you to the black city along with the high dragon and somehow meet the real andrastia... again fail spelling... what im saying is in orgins they should of made the fade to go with the plot...

It's Andraste ^_^

And I'm of two minds on this suggestion.  On one hand, I'd love to see the Fade better integrated into the story, and see more of the religious lore in Thedas.  On the other hand, such a plot arc would favor mage PCs, since they have innate connections to the Fade.  it also might kill one of the nice things about DA:O--the reliance on faith for the religion.  As it stands, you can interpret the Chantry's views however you like, and there's just enough evidence in game to support any reasonable view.  Going to the Black City might sway that debate conclusively one way or another--which I love IRL, but DA2 might be more interesting with ambiguity.

I disagree, in a way.... The Black City should be the grand finale of the whole series imo.  I mean there are oceans and whole other continents; the qunari came from somewhere else.  Did they escape a Blight perhaps?  Also maybe the Chantry story isn't true as Arlathan predates the chantry; what if the elves' creators are the true deities at work and/or the Maker is nonexistant or one of them?  To sum it up, in my opinion there is too much to develop in Thedas and the rest of the world to jump right to the Black CIty.

Although I don't dislike the Fade as much as some people do, I agree with OP-- the Fade has a lot of unrealized potential... I don't mind the blur around the edges, but the landscapes were dull and uninspiring and washed out. Sure, there were floating books and bookcases and such, and some alien-looking examinables, but that was about the extent of it. It could have been so much more surreal.

I want to see places like the forest temple in Ocarina of Time, where you'd walk down a hallway and then the whole place would be tilted 90 degrees. Or puzzles that play with other spatial perspectives like the relative size of things or the distance between things. Or ones that make you wonder if you're still in the Fade or not. Things like that. Also, the scenery could be a lot more fantastic. A pride demon could have some giant castle as his lair. A desire demon could have.. well, an interesting lair as well, hehe. As far as that goes, perhaps the Sloth demon's domain was actually pretty fitting-- it was so drab and boring, it sapped many people's will to keep going. :)

Having better complementary music would help too. Would have loved to hear something like this rather than the minimalist atmospheric.. low-key.. not-very-noticeable-there-in-the-background creep-out music we got instead. Of course, astral plane music is probably better suited to the astral plane than it is to a dream world, but it's not so much that I want the music to sound exactly like that, as it is that I want it to capture that wonder and surrealism of the place.

Regarding the Black City, I'd prefer if we never see that. Same with some of the other more mystical parts of the lore, like Arlathan and the immortal elves. Perhaps we could visit places that might be Arlathan or might be the Black City, but I don't want it to be revealed, without a doubt, what the nature of these things are, or what the truth is about the various religious lores.

Edited for probably not using the word "minimalist" correctly. Substituted for other words to try to approximate what I'm trying to say. Damn my vocabulary.

I have no problem with the Fade visuals.

But the gameplay in the Fade was annoying. Too much backtracking to locate the essences and break doors/mouseholes. 95% of the Fade was solo, thus cutting out party interaction and limiting strategies.

Damn you people do know there are MODS out there that allow you to skip this stuff right? Some people actually don't mind the puzzles, the intrigue and the storyline to it. The visuals are just as they should be and the music never makes you feel safe, it makes you feel like your not in your element. Everything was well done. If they made it overly fantastical looking then it wouldn't seem like the neutral disconcerting place that it is. Its called Fade for a reason.

I understand all the hate for the fade, but it seems that Bioware already knows our dislike for it. I think they did a great job of using the Fade in Awakening, and pretty much already addressed all the complaints. I see no reason they would go backwards and do all the wrong things again.

The only parts I can honestly say were enjoyable in the Fade were your companions' nightmares. Their nightmares provided inklings of insight into their characters--as well as a few chuckles--which was something I really dug. Morrigan and Zevran's were especially funny. But other than that, I'm with a good portion of you: I hated it and felt it added nothing to the Circle sub-plot.

Not hard. It's the Fade for crying out loud. It constantly changes and nothing stays the same, except the once Golden City or whatever it was called... it's late...

So, BioWare can change the Fade visuals, music, and physics if they so please. It's a dream/spirit world that can look like the regular world, your best dream, or worst nightmare. I was a bit disappointed with the Fade pretty much being the same thing in Awakening as Origins. I had fun, but I hope they really change it in DA2 as well, just to fit the lore of course!

In the Awakening, the fade still looks bizarre and uninspiring. It is basically a location that saps enthusiasm for the game.

When I entered Mankar Camoran's paradise in Oblivion I wanted to explore every nook and cranny of the place

Granted that the Fade in DAO is not the same concept, but still if an environment has the effect of wearing the player out, that environment has failed
