I did this quest a long, long time ago, and I think I may have messed up this time around. Advice please.

I went into the cult compound, through the room with the gas and the Vampiric Mists. I saw Gaal and started just attacking him. He and his minions attacked back and I killed them. I went into the center area stealthed and saw the Eyeless One (beholder). I sent in a bunch of summons and shot at it with arrows around the corner and killed it after a long time.

I don't think it's supposed to go this way. Wasn't I supposed to talk to Gaal and get a key or something? I couldn't find a key on his corpse at all, or on any of the corpses. And wasn't the Eyeless One supposed to be in the next level? Isn't there a Rod of some kind that I need to get?

Anyway, I have some old saves that I can reload. But I was wondering if I can even finish the quest this way.

Thanks for your help.

You can finish the quest in that way as well. Simply wiping out the cult is faster. You can also infiltrate it by speaking to Gaal and pretending you wish to join. You do not get access to anything past the locked door in that same area unless you perform Gaal's task.

Huh. So I have actually already finished the quest, then... is that right? Killing the Eyeless One finished the quest? Can I go back to the Helm temple and finish it?

I thought it might be a bug, because I didn't remember killing the big Beholder like that. I thought he was on some other level. So Killing Gaal spawns the Eyeless One? Seems waaay easier and faster than the last time I did it.

Hm. Maybe I should re-do the quest anyway. I'm probably missing out on some good XP and equipment, right?

Yes, killing the beholder allows you to report back to the temple and finish the quest. It doesn't matter how or where you kill it.

Yes.

I'm wondering if the way I just did the quest is the best way to get max exp from the quest (with minimal, or no cheese I suppose). I talked to Gaal initially, he gave me the door key, and sent me to get half of rod. I went down, spoke with Sassar, then to where you have to answer those riddles, creating the bridge (getting like 40k+ exp for that), where the beholds/shadows are waiting for you. I then went and talked to the Diseased Ones, then to the Avatar guy. He gave me the half of the rod, then I went and spoke to Sassar. After talking to him, he tells me to talk to his contact Tad, inside the cult, who opens the stairway that leads you through Ghoul Town? to get to the back side of the big beholder pit area. I went into the cult area, wiped out everything in there (thank you Shield of Balduran), but did NOT loot the 2nd half of the shaft yet. Went back upstairs, went and talked to Gaal, and gave him the shaft (75k exp), he attacks, I kill him. Then I proceeded to kill almost all the cult members (going counter-clockwise to save the Unseeing Eye for last). Killed the USE (30k exp), then went back into the Beholder pit area, and got the other half of the rift device. It combined, but did NOT give me any exp. I then took it to the Avatar dude again, and he gave me ~47k exp + the shield.

If you go combine the 2 pieces of the rift device in the Beholder pit, you get like ~22-26k exp (somewhere around there), then you kill the USE in the pit for 30k exp, but you do NOT get the 75k exp from Gaal that way. If you do it this way, Gaal just attacks you on sight when you see him again.

Does Sassar give you any exp? I just learned about the HUGE 75k exp you get from Gaal if you give him the rod half. Doing it this way, he attacks you immediately anyway, and you get it right back from his corpse. As long as it doesn't hurt your standing with the Cleric guild or something then it seems the way to go.

I was like 14k exp over the lvl 16 cleric mark, so I dualed (to theif) right before I spoke with Gaal. I had already summoned 5 skelly warriors, buffed them, myself, etc, depleted all my cleric spells before I dualed =) So I was a thief running around with Skelly warriors. I dualed, spoke with Gaal, got the 75k, and my 5 skelly warriors made quick work of him and the rest of the crew there in the Unseeing Eye temple area.

Rift area riddle (40k XP) + give Gaal the rod (75k) + kill Unseeing Eye (30k) + return united rod to Amaunator (47k) = 192k XP (plus XP from kills)

Rift area riddle (40k) + unite the rod (24k) + kill Unseeing Eye (30k) + return united rod to Amaunator (47k) = 131k XP (plus kills)

AFAIK, you don't get any XP from Sassar; to my knowledge, you don't get any other major XP bonuses (it has been a while since I've slain the Unseeing Eye, a task I intend to do on the LN Monk I'm soloing currently). I could be wrong here, given the gap of time since I last played this subquest. Could be also that clerics get a bit more XP from somewhere, perhaps your temple's head priest upon completion?

EDIT: Also, your class/kit may allow some ways for you to take out the gauths and beholders without the use of SoB. :D
