I´d like to ask you about your opinion about having Bethany at our side.

I´m only child myself and asked if I´d like to have a sister or a cute brother when I was 5 years old, I honestly answered that I´d prefer to get a doggy.
I had to wait til DA:O til I got one and now, surprisingly Bioware seems also to fix the sister issue, where my parents failed. Posted Image

What I´d like to know:

Are you annoyed because family bands are the simpliest way to tell the player:
"Like her! Care for her! Promptly!"?
Or are you tired about the eternal lonely hero who´s parents died 100 years ago or explode in the intro to give you the utlimate reason for revenge (besides of an expolding love interest of course).

I know it´s a little bit cliched, that heroes usually pop up from nowhere just right before epic things have to be done. On the other side it could be hard to be superhuman with somebody on your side you argued about make up or.. magic wands before.

Independent from the time lenght Bethany will really attend us in the end:
What do you think about?

Yes I am annoyed. I am a single child myself and don't enjoy roleplaying having a brother or sister that I have to help or care for.

I hope we can kill Bethany or give her away to Chantry.

Depends on whether or not she gets kidnapped by a wizard, and I have to work a long series of odd jobs to make enough money to organize her rescue.

I have nine other siblings, so having a sister in a game won't be much of an adjustment for me.

And the PC having living family in an RPG is always a tricky issue. There are obvious issues such as family resemblance and the like, but what is more pressing is getting the character to care about them as if they actually were related.

I felt Dragon Age did admirably in this aspect with the Human Noble origin story. I think they'll be able to pull off Bethany.

I think this is what you're asking.

And I have a sneaking suspicoun that she will be the "Jenkins" character for DA2. Just a hunch.

Hopefully, Bethany will not invariably die in DA2. Having Hawke have a sibling party member has a LOT of potential. Hopefully they will not squander it.

Yeah, but since I don't like I will just choose another charac...Oh sorry, I have forgotten this isn't like Dragon Age we played before.

Bethany might not be the one who will be in need of caring. You never know.

Also an only child.  i had the dog  :D  Told her all my secrets, but  I always got a bit sad when my best friend would talk about her and her sisters sneaking out to the tree on Christmas.

Will it be an automatic like her?  Where family is concerned I've seen brothers and sisters stop talking to one another until one of them died,  and I have missed the part about being required to like Bethany.  Though I'm sure i will.

I think it's an interesting idea.  Will she tease you about your LI or get jealous.  Will you influence how she behaves?  Be evil or good, or will she leave you if the two of you don't see eye to eye.  i think it could work, but will wait to see.  :)

I think it could be an interesting thing (having a sister in the game), depending on how it's done.

For starters, I hope she's not just the "tutorial level" companion who ends up getting killed at the end of it.  My fear is that she will be, since I'm assuming both you and she will be fleeing Lothering, and perhaps her death is what spurs Hawke on to greatness.  But I'd rather she survive as well, and be part of your party the entire game.

The other thing is hopefully they let you act toward her however you want.  It would be interesting if they allowed all sorts of different relationships between Bethany and Hawke: loving and caring, competitive and rivalry, indifferent and resentful, etc.  I want the choice *not* to care for her, and not be forced to have to be the protective big brother.

We shall see, I suppose.

I wonder when they're going to start putting character bios on the main Dragon Age 2 page.  At what time in the DA:O development timeline did those bios go up on that page?

If Bethany is like my sister in real life, then I'd happily give her to templars.

I agree with this. Having a sibling party member would add an entirely new dynamic. Especially when you have the Approval System to think about. Having a "sibling rivalry" would be quite the unique experience.

And if she's your older sister, there could be the extra un-said authority she has over you. Older sisters are like that.

And I would also be interested to see the options for Hawke's relationship with his/her sister. For example; if Bethany started forming a relationship with one of your followers at camp, you could be the encouraging or the over-protective brother/sister.

I dont see the difference to Alistair...hes like a brother from the family "grey Wardens"...and, from the nearly beginning of the game, its only you two left of the family....and you have to stick with him...

And who knows...maybe we even can betray our sister in the game.

I am surprised the extent that they allow you to troll, Kordaris, this thread has NOTHING to do with your beliefs and bringing them here is only disrespectful to the OP.

On topic: I have said before, and I will again, having a sister is a powerful thing to bring into the plot, and I very much look forward to what Bioware does with the relationship. It could truly help define the game if handled correctly.

I'm not entirely sure what you're saying, but I'm guessing that it's 'I don't see the difference between Bethany and Alistair'?

Well, the main difference is that Bethany is your sister, with whom you have a filial relationship. Alistair is this guy you're stuck with. Being the same people in a club isn't exactly like being family.

Ýes, but I´m note sure if it doesn´t also bind us somehow.
If I imagine having an affair with Leliana, than cheating her with Morrigan and doing lot´s of nasty things (I haven´t played a male character, it´s just an example)..
Wouldn´t it feel different somehow if somebody from family is watching it?
If think she had to be very, very  flexible, if her behaviour should fit to the different ways we can play our character.

Oh, the Human origin sticks you with a family?  Well, I guess I can choose another character: how about a Dwarf?  Oh...both origins have families, as does the City Elf.

Well, I can still play a Dalish Elf Rogue.  There's really nothing wrong with having only one origin after all!

Why can't she be a person with set principles and scruples, like anyone else? I know my sister would disapprove of my burning puppies, having a voice of conscience in your ear is not necessarily bad or annoying, maybe it will succeed in turning you away from your evil acts? That, in my opinion, is interesting.
