Hawke is a blank slate.

To me, an RPG is about roleplaying.  It's about developing a character's personality and seeing where it goes.

So in DAO, I'd create a character who had opinions about the world around him, and ambitions (or not) regarding his station (or lack thereof), and then I'd play the game with him and watch him grow and adapt and cope with the events that transpired.

And then, when I was done, I'd create a new character who had different opinions about the world around him, and different ambitions (or a different lack of them), and then I'd play the game with him (or her) and watch him (or her) grow and adapt and cope with the events that transpired.

And it was a vastly different experience each time.  Because the Warden was a blank slate, I could make him whatever I wanted, and then that character's decisions would drive the action.  The narrative would revolve around that person's decisions, and that person's decisions were entirely of my making.

DA2 is signficantly changing the presentation of the game.  It is significantly changing the breadth of aesthetic choices available to the player during character creation.  But there's one thing that's still true.

Hawke is a blank slate.

Blank slate or not, for me Bioware always delivers great companion characters and deep, interesting morality choices. Those are the things I most look forward to as well. I actually don't mind a few things being predetermined about a character so long as I have free reign to really develop that character's personality and morality. Where's he's been doesn't necessarily dictate where's he's going if that makes any sense.

In a preview think it was 1up.. I heard it described as devil may cry with dialogue... somehow that just sounds awesome... but doesn't quite sound like DA "successor to Baldur's Gate"

personally sounds more like a choice they should have made with jade empire.. Jade Empire was to Devil May Cry as ME1 was to GOW

The demo was purposely easy with over-the-top effects, because it was being exaggerated by Verik.

Yeah, it sounds like the writing team has some craaazy stuff up their sleeve for us to behold in March. Really, the only thing that worries me is Hawke's voice possibly not sounding well / not fitting certain types of character. But, I suppose I should have faith in Bioware.

They said Dragon Age Origins was the succesor to baldur's gate. This is Dragon Age 2 I don't see why the sequel can't be something different while keeping true to the lore while providing a good roleplaying experience

I'll believe it when I see it.

Making a voiced character a blank slate is next to impossible.

I counter that making ANY CRPG character a blank slate is next to impossible. Since he/she will always only be able to act in predetermined ways written into the game code reguardless of voice or no voice. As long as my actions can effect the world and story and companions get the gist of the personality the character is displaying i'm satisfied.

But why he acts that way is up to you.

And I'm still hoping for the ability to turn off the voice.  I'm sure I'll try the voice, but there's almost no way I'll be able to play multiple characters with the same voice every time.

You can always play with subtitles! Posted Image

I like the idea of a voiced main character in RPGs, I just wish that it wasn't so expensive to have more than one voice. I'm sure a lot of people would be less angry if they could choose a voice (or --heaven forbid-- make the sound files themselves with modding tools.)

Actually, I might try turning off the subtitles for the first time ever.  If I can disable the PC voice without disabling the NPC voices, I can play with subtitles disabled and then I never have to see the full dialogue lines I didn't get to choose.  It would basically turn the dialogue engine into a keyword system like Oblivion or Ultima IV.

And that would be fun.

hmm, in all blank state MC RPG games so far, at least the ones I've played, MC suffers from a "memory loss" at the beginning. Not a bad thing, just curious if DA2 will begin with how we don't remember anything.

I can see what the OP is saying and if it's true, it's excellent news. But to be honest I'll wait and see. I don't take devs words as absolute truths. Not because I think they're lying, but because a devs take on a blank slate could be different from mine.

You're a very strange man, Sylvius.

I said he was a blank slate to the fans right now because, at the moment, they know nothing about him compared to the Warden. And you seize on that phrase and misconstrue it to give you hope? Not that I want to crush that hope (as fun as that is, from time to time) but I'd hate for it to be based on something I didn't even really say.

a blank slate would actually be preferable because then Hawke would have no predetermined core character as Shepard has in ME

I'd say Shepard is pretty much a blank slate too, she's pretty much whatever we make of her. Good, bad, ruthless, merciful, cares about others, loner, etc etc. Its a common theme in all Bioware games, it works really well, I'm sure regardless of what Mr. Gaider has and has not already said, that Hawke will indeed be enough of a blank slate to continue that tradition in an effective way.

Even in D&D, you start with base stats.

Maddening. Your mind-bending powers are impressive, most impressive. But I hope that we get some more official information detailing the sequel before the 17th darnit. This is worse than that time Blizzard said the word "Soon". :(
