Hi, I just got the game the other day.  I looked at all the DLC available, and damn, there's A LOT.  I definitely can't buy them all, maybe 2 or 3, and maybe "Awakening" if it's REALLY good.

So my question is... what DLC are worth it and which aren't?  I'd appreciate any advide.  I don't wanna get stuck with some ****ty DLC and not get to experience the good ones.

Oh yea and I already have "The Stone Prisoner" and the Dragon armor since they came with my copy.

Thanks
:)

um....i heard lelianna's song is the best DLC of them all, but sadly it doesn't contribute much to the main story line. (item wise)

If you want the most badass armors and weapons in the game for your main story line then definately get Warden's Keep for the Starfang 2h or longsword (arguably the best 2h & longsword in the game) and the warden commander armor set (gives great stamina boost)
Returning to Ostagar is another good one since it gives the best armor set for tanks (Cailen's set) plus a decent staff, 2 badass longswords and a good dagger.
Note all those armor sets and weapons (except starfang, since it's already dragonbone) can be upgraded to dragonbone if you are lvl 12+ simply by putting them in the party inventory (for console) or selling them to the armor smithing npc at soldier's peak (pc version) and buying them back.

hope this helps

Cool, thnx for the advice :)

So is "Awakening" and "Darkspawn Chronicles" any good? Also, what's the deal with the "Feastday Packs"?

Feastday Pack are collection of unique gifts that you give to your squad to boost they loyality (or lower them) no real point in it, but if you want to get 100% loyalty right from the start then get it.
Many dont like Awakening, but I do. It's long, new locations, quests, items, skills, charchters and so on. Good especially if you can get it cheep in retail (I saw it for 10$ few days ago in online store).
Darkspawn Chronicles is waste of money in my oppinion, it's short, no storry, no VO and close to pure hack and slash. The only good thing about it is that you get a chance to kill your squadmates from DA:O. Plus reward that you get for DA:O (aka sword for rogue) sucks.
Lelianas Song is nice, good quests, full VO and good armor for rogue as reward for DA:O.
Shale DLC is also interesting, because Shale is sort of nice charachter with interesting side quests which add a bit of flavor for the main game some good weapons in it also.
Return to Ostegard is also ok, you get a chance to see Ostagard in ruins. Find some interesting items and swords, get some more perspective on Dunkan and King Calan (sorry for spelling names wrong) plus interesting items of all sorts
Wardens Keep is sort of boring, its short, in the end you dont get a Keep :) they didnt finish it or something. You get two shops outside the Keep, but not much of interest in my oppinion. The storry is ok. Plus ok armor and some weapons (had this DLC for very long time, so got bored of it and dont find items interesting anymore)

I have all DLC, and can recommend you following as a bottomline:
Awakening if you buy cheep retail version (DLC costs too much now)

Lelianas Song - very good
Return to Ostagard - very good
Shale - very good

Wardens Keep - ok(ish)

Darkspawn chronicals - boring
Feastday pack - boring

Feastday pranks and gifts was a real disappointment. I expected actual reactions from party members, like when you give them gifts specific to their personality or background. But it's just a way to play around with the approval rating of your party and would be a big temptation to just 'cheat', therefore definitely not recommended for first play through, or at all really.

Warden's Keep, Stone Prisoner, Return to Ostagar, in that order I'd say. Their main value comes from integrating with the main campaign, providing XP, new gear, party members (Shale) and more depth to the story.

I would personally say that Warden's keep is the best DLC apart from Stone Prisoner. It has the whole party, it's a real quest with a good story, and It adds to our knowledge of Warden and Fereldan history.

RtO has some good moments, but they did it on the cheap. There isn't interaction between characters when there should be, particularly in terms of cutscene conversation. It could have been really good, so it's a darn shame. They really didn't take it very seriously.

Leliana's Song is well made and adds to our understanding of the character, so it's worth buying, but I don't consider it a proper DLC for the game, more like an extra. You're playing a character other than your own, and again, there could have been more interactive dialogue. That was almost entirely replaced by 'cinematics'. Too much watching, not enough talking/doing.

DSC and the Feastday gifts/pranks were just garbage, although the gifts are almost worth it for a stick that you can throw for dog. That was the only part I liked.

Ok, I have all of them so I can give my fair opinion on them all. Starting from my least favourite to my favourite. Return to Ostagar is good for what it is; a 90min adventure through a mostly already explored area, the emotional memories you get are the best thing about it.

Darkspawn Chronicles is a little better than Return to Ostagar; even though it is mostly fighting, it brings strong feelings out of you for your companions, and is a fun dlc just to fight through, the STORY is in the codexes people!

Warden's Keep is next, it features a fun area to fight through, a couple of conversations with meaning and a good story; also the chest is needed to play through Origins properly, it stores your equipment.

Leliana's Song is the best of the paid DLC, it's story is rich and the fights fun but challenging. Leliana speaks her words plus she was a very interesting companion so the package is all there. The end is epic!

The Stone Prisoner is extremely good; I love Shale, but you have that soooo....

The best is Awakening, it is a 25 hour adventure that takes place 6 months after Origins. Many say that Awakening is crap, but I disagree. It is faster paced which is more suited to the story of Awakening. 5 new companions, 2 new nemesis' and basically an extension of Origins itself.

So it depends what you want. Get Return to Ostagar and Warden's Keep if you want to play them in with the main story as they take place inside Origins. Or get Darkspawn Chronicles to play AFTER Origins for a fun what-if story. Get Awakening if you get to the end of Origins and want more (You will). I hope this helped.

Im new with the game myself and have been pondering what DLC to bother with. I dunno if Ill bother with any besides maybe the Awakening expansion. I just think about what is it that has me loving DAO right now and I think its simply just being on an adventure that I feel like I truly never know what is around the next corner. Ive had surprise after surprise, so the writing has been great in that way. Weirdly though Im not yet really that into the core story of the game of me being a Grey Warden and fending off the Darkspawn.

Anyways my point is that I dont know if I see any of the DLC really giving me more of what I want, or am I wrong? (Note I dont have Shale DLC, and though the quest of that char seems interesting, Im not so sure I see myself actually using Shale so yeah...)

Wardens Keep.... funny thing is is when I first talked to the guy in the party camp that gives you/tries to sell you this quest, before I knew he was talking about the DLC I was already looking for a way out of the conversation thinking to myself, "nah doesnt sound like some thing of interest to me and sounds like a waste of time, Ill just pass on this quest", and then the option pops up to download the DLC. So just from that I dont really got interest in that DLC, but also from my understanding it basically is like the Keep is haunted or some thing and you play through these flash backs.... In other words to me sounds like a prologue piece in which has more Duncan in it I believe. Im not that into prologue pieces really even if they did that for Mass Effect I probably wouldnt like. I mean to me its just like oh ok play through a part of game that has no relevance? nah.... Maybe it is good I really dunno, but unless its like 3+ hours long and has a few nice twists/surprises that really could change my outlook on aspects of the game if not the whole game entirely, then no I dont see what the deal is....

So yeah when thinking about Leliana's Song I got the same issue of it being a prologue piece. Here you play as Leliana in the past before she went to the Chantry and basically learn more about her back story and how she became who she is.... Yet I feel I know enough and I dont have that high of a connection with this character right now. Perhaps if I used this character in my party and talked to her more Id like her more, perhaps really love her character and have to get the DLC, but yeah at the moment Im not feeling another prologue piece I dont feel I really need or would add much to my personal experience.

Dark Spawn Chronicles actually sounds interesting to me, though er, yeah.... From what I can gather is that its basically a retcon and non-canon piece. It looks like the type of thing that would be entertaining, at least the alt story behind it, but despite that looks very cheap. And really Im not sure if any one really understands for sure what the hell the point of this DLC even is? To play as Darkspawn? Dont seem like many have cared about that...

Return to Ostagard has me the most interested as it seems like the only DLC really that is relevant to any thing in the game and isnt just some total side quest. Maybe Im wrong but I just get the impression there is more to get out of RtO than the others.

So am I wrong about any thing? Id like to know as I myself am still pondering what DLC to bother with.

Icy X, in my opinion RTO is the worst DLC but yeah. They are all fun, all of them. If you have the money get them, you won't regret it. They all have different experiences but I enjoyed them all.

Warden's Keep is reasonable enough. The Stone Prisoner is good (if you like puzzles). Return To Ostegar is good too...(make sure you have Wynne and Alistair included in you parrty for that)

Although i love to death Leliana and was so looking forward to Leliana's Song DLC, i found it disappointing. I thought it was boring until just past the middle bit. The it got going ok.

As for Awakening...bugs and crashes ruined it. I only played through it once. Whether patch 3 cured all known issues i don't know but it is worth trying it , at least once.

Darkspawn Chronicles...well if you want to play as a darkspawn you are welcome.

PS: Patch 4 is out now. I wonder what that has done.

Well one good thing about Warden's Keep is...once you have completed it the smithy there (when you go back that is ) can craft you a super sword...The Starfang.

But you must of picked up the Meteor Ore you find in a random ncounter where a couple find a baby and raise it as their own.

Warden's Keep was home to, yes, some wardens. However, the leader started a rebellion against the king of Fereldan 200 years ago and their keep came under siege. To find out what happens you must download the content and brave the ghosts of Warden's Keep to see if you can prove the Warden's innocence. It's fun!

Leliana's Song lets you play her infamous tale of intrigue and betrayal. It fleshes out her backstory and has some fun mini-boss fights: hint: the mabari's are killer. Both are extremely fun to play; extensions of Origins really.

Wardens Keep is not a prologue. You go there and yes its haunted. but flash back are not yours :) It's like ghosts around you which are stuck in time and repeat the story. So you fight through zombies and uncover the thruth. So it's kind'a ok. plus as Jamie9 said you get a chest. Which is deffinetly a life savior to stash your stuff.

If you like adventure and exploration, then Shale and Wardens Keep is probably the best for you (also RtO) because:
Wardens Keep - you get new area to explore which belonged to wardens before.
Shale DLC - two new ereas to travel to: where you pick up  Shale and do some quests there, and then in Deep Roads you get new location to explore that was long overtaken by darkspawn.
