Okay, so Hawke as we know will be the Champion of Kirkwall and as I'm currently replaying Awakening, I noticed that Nathaniel Howe spent some time in Kirkwall sometime in his travels.
So maybe we run into Howe at some point in the beginning? Or even more interesting it could be Nathaniel who is the father of Hawke, that Nathaniel pulled a Maric and made himself some bastard son out of marriage, well aware this is a stretch and that Nathaniel would have had to be quite young when this happened, but well, it's a theory I thought I would throw out there.
Nathaniel Howe, maybe important?

Stretch? Dude, he would have been incapable of conceiving a child! Not to mention the fact that Hawke appears to be only 2/3 years younger, if that.

well the game stretches over 10 years, if the Hawke we see is at the end of that journey, it could be possible, assuming Nathaniel is around the 35 as he appear to be look wise, in my personal opinion.
Anyway even if he is younger, there is still the thing they could have run into each other.

Age difference aside it's pretty sure that it's jus soli in Thedas, so unless Hawke was born in Ferelden it's improbable.

Hawke is confirmed to be "from" Lothering, whether or not he was born there is not confirmed but if anything it refutes him being born and raised in Kirkwall like any possible bastard of Nathanial would be

I do think that of all the people we've met so far, Nathaniel has a higher likelihood than most of showing up in DA2. Him being Hawke's father doesn't fit the timeline as I currently understand it.

I thought he was supposed to be around the Cousland Warden's age at the beginning of DA:O...so, early/mid twenties, possibly late twenties during the events of Awakening?

Agreed. That's perfectly plausible.

Nathaniel could reasonably make a cameo in some form in Kirkwall or elsewhere in the Free Marches, yes, I think that's definitely a possibility.
As for his age - Nathaniel was sent to "squire" in the Free Marches, making me believe he was eh, 12-16 years old when he left. He spent eight (if I remember correctly) years there before returning to Ferelden after his father was killed during the Fifth Blight. I would believe Nathaniel is no more than his mid 20s in Awakening.
