I think one reason Shepard (either sex) is so popular is that he/she is a person to aspire to.  Regardless of morality Shep is the ultimate embodiment of what it is to be human.  He/she gets the job done no matter the cost.  He/she isn't just some meat head that doesn't think through things.  Shepard represents the pinnacle of the human condition.  Shepard is not without flaws and sometimes makes mistakes which is the whole point; no human is perfect.  Shepard is like Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry; he/she takes out the trash of the universe whether by force or negotiation.

I play as a Male Shep and always will. Played as Fem once hated it. Hi I'm the Mando Shepard and I approve of this message.

Why?
I have 4 MaleSheps and 3 FemSheps.
I find them equally awesome.

I just could never get into it. Everybody says they love Jennifer Hale's voice acting. I actually didnt like it.  Thats not to say Mark Meer's is any better. I just can't get into the female character.

I think Hale's VA has been way overhyped. I mean, she's good, naturally, but no one could possibly live up to the standard that Hale fans have claimed. It also seems that a lot of people are unable to praise her VA without trying to tear down Mark Meer's, and that's just sad.

VA is one of the harder jobs to do. You are in a sounds booth with nothing except the script to act off of. Some of the other actors in the game don't show real emotion either at times of need. I think the best VA's of the Game are Garrus and Tali's. They actually show emotion.

I love Garrus's banter with ManShep after his recruitment mission. :-)

Shepard: Hell Garrus, you were always ugly. Slap a little face paint on there and no one will even notice.

Garrus: *chuckles* Oh, don't make me laugh. My face is barely holding together as it is. Besides, everyone was always ignoring you and hitting on me. Time to give you a chance.

I love Hale's VA and, yes, consider it superior to Meer's, I admit. But I've got to say I thought she did a better job in ME1. Plus, renegade doesn't suit her IMO. Meer's renegade performance is better. I actually agree that Hale's performance has been overhyped. She's good. So are quite a few other voice actors in ME.

Personally, I dig Ali Hillis as much as Hale. As Liara and as Lighting (FFXIII). A lot of people don't like Liara's voice. I love it.

I like both voice actors about equally, but I think that the guy doing guysheps voice fits better with the character. Hale's voice can sometimes be a little too butch for the characters I make too. Plus guyshep does badassery way better :P

My prize for best VA would probably go to either of the actors doing Tali, Joker or Captain Anderson (the latter primarily for the performance in ME1, of course). Tali always sounds so spirited, youthful and interesting as a person. Quite likeable. I also think the one doing Wrex is very well chosen for the job. But the voice casting is on the whole superb. Just think of General Septimus, Helena Blake, the Asari Councilor, Zabaleta, and Detective Chellick, to mention just a few of the other chartacters.

But this discussion belongs to a different thread. Somebody should create one concerning voices and voice acting - good or bad and why. I'm busy monitoring a thread already.

I got Mass Effect the day it came out for 360, it was the first game I ever got for my Xbox, and I have been an avid fan of Sheploo since day 1.  In fact, today I started my first ever FemShep in ME1 and I don't really know how I like her yet.  I made her lipstick too pink and it's been really bothering me haha.  But yeah, I think I might like playing with FemShep just for the novelty of it, but it will never truly feel like I'm playing Mass Effect if I'm not using Sheploo.  His face is awesome and grizzly to me and I really love the delivery of Meer's lines.  The only other person I could think of to voice his character would probably be Steven Blum (Spike from Cowboy Bebop.)

A question I have for anyone on here is what your opinions are regarding the crazy scars and red eyes.  I really only enjoy playing renegade (I can't help myself from backhanding the reporter, even on my paragon playthroughs haha), and I liked the way your character's appearance changed based on your actions in games like Fable, but to me the whole red eyes thing is just too much. I try to see how long I can keep the scars, but I always end up using the dermal regeneration thing.  Also, are they ever gonna explain Martin Sheen's wtf-robot-eyes?  I mean, wtf?

Haha, I got rid of the scars, too! The scarring looks cool for about half of the game. But it gets too much eventually. I couldn't romance anybody with that face :P Plus, I'm a woman, so Iooking at a monstrous face for hours isn't particularily appealing...
Not sure there's much to say about TIM's eyes. Got himselves better eyes. Anything that makes mankind stronger? *shrugs*

I don't know about over hyped but I don't understand Meer bashing. I like both equally, they're different.

Let me try to explain. Do you remember when Godzilla (the US version) came out? The movie was so overhyped, nothing could possibly live up to what it was being built up as even if it was the most incredible movie ever created (which it was far from). In fact, the massive overhype of it actually turned people off. People were getting so sick of hearing about it that they just wanted the thing to be in and out of theaters just so they wouldn't have to hear about it anymore. That is what I'm talking about: people talking up Hale's performance so much (and occasionally at the expense of other perfectly fine voice actors)  that people that have never actually played the game (or ones that have) are expecting a grandoise performance that just isn't possible through voice acting alone.

Again, I used to have no problem with playing femSheps but the obnoxiousness of some (not all) Hale VA fans has really just soured me on the character as a whole, and that's really a shame since there really is a decided lack of strong, believable female protagonists in RPGs/FPS (in my opinion).

Why do you let other people's opinions affect your own experience so much? Leave theirs on the other side of the fence and indulge in your own. It's just as valid as theirs. That way you could start enjoying a great femshep career again - which also lets you appreciate a maleshep career more, since you're less likely to get bored with this marvelous game. ;)

For ScooterPie88 You're right

While the image of Shepard's still dependent on the actions of the hero. Not every “target” justifies the means. And it's an important moment in the game (and in the life too…).

I think that it is easier to describe the hero with help of the musical theme.

I tried to make a "mix" from two themes: “Two Steps from Hell” and "Preliator" (Globus). The result was - a musical short film on the general theme of Shepard. If interested - take a look.

http://www.dailymoti...lide-film_music

However, in this film the main character - a male character. I shall try to give the same "response" - for a woman Shepard (new film). Actions of both types of hero looked the same (either sex). I hope to convey the difference in the basic musical theme - another topic than in the first film.

;)

It's more the associations that the nasty behavior leaves with me. I don't have a problem with people that say 'I prefer Hale's voice acting; I think she did a better job,' in threads or forums that address that; that is, after all, merely a personal preference. I take issue with the people who say things like 'Meer's voice is like nails on a chalkboard' in threads and forums that have absolutely nothing to do with voice acting at all. Respect is a two-way street; if other people can't respect the fact that some people actually like the male Shep voice acting (or, for that matter, the default male Shepard head morph), why should anyone else return the favor?

I just wish that people could be a little more civil when it comes to things like that, that's all. I already am essentially unable to read the femShep thread because of this attitude that runs rampant there.

 Homer Shepard.
Homer Shepard is a Renegade Spacer. He really dose not care what his Mother or the council says.

The council, good riddens to them because they been blown up to pieces. Who needs them. More humans in the council the better.
He nearly forgotten about Liara. He (Homer) know more about the Protheans pass two weeks then Liara knows in fifty years and call her a scientist. Hah!!!

Geth!!! Seen one Geth you seen them all. He was happy about the rearrangement he done with Cerberus relating to Geth. Homer put the moneys to good use.

That cargo that Homer brought up some time ago after getting Jack. He did not use it. Its dead weight. Might blow it out off the Normandy later.

As for that so called suicide mission.
Garrus is the leader of the other team in both cases.
Tali as  tech
Mordin as  escort
Jack as  shield
Miranda and Samara  with Shepard x2
In the final battle Homer brought Tali and Thane with him.
As for the base, Homer cannot figure out why TIM wants the base. So Homer blew it up. Homer like to see things going boooooommm.

And it tends to crop up in other threads, too. Sometimes entirely unbidden. It strikes me as extremely defensive that these particular fans feel the need to bash Meer at every opportunity (insecure much?), and it can grate on the nerves a bit.

Me? I think both do a good job. Sometimes a particular line is better when Meer says it, while another might be better when Hale says it, but I don't think either is universally better than the other.

To put in perspective.

Opinions are like ****s, everyone has one

I see this as a human nature and unforunately in some cases.   Some people push their opinions too strongly that it rubs others the wrong way.  Being on the internet is also another factor IMO.  Since it gives us a certain anonymity, some people act or say certain things that they would never do so in real life.

Its just really part & parcel of participating the internet community.  There will always be a good and the bad.  The most important thing I feel is that we do not let others have an impact on your enjoyment of the game itself.  You can't control what they say but you can control how you react towards it.

I don't see why you should deny yourself the enjoyment of participating in the femshep thread.  Because the people whom you mention could certainly care less if you were offended or not.  So if I were you, I would not let them get to me.  Why should you allow a few bad eggs to get to you?

The art of philosophy. If we cannot learn to stay rooted in our own convictions, we'll become like chaff before the wind.

I miss the thumbs-up smilie on this site. I would have given it to you, Aurica.
