What's with all the MaleShep hate? I look in here and there's less than 100 pages, the FemShep thread has over 1000. Just browsing around I get the feeling that there's a distinct anti MaleShep phenomenon going on.
I guess my question is "Why is gender such a big deal?"
You may want to ask that question in the femShep thread...but be prepared to be labelled as a troll no matter how politely you phrase the question.
In my opinion, though, the reason that there aren't as many posts here as there are in the fem thread is because there have already been a multitude of enjoyable games that feature a male playable character and relatively few that allow us to play as a female, much less a customizable one; thus, the overwhelming love for the female option. People that generally like to play as a male character have likely already done so dozens of times over already and are all 'fan threaded out.'
Also (and this is again
my opinion) there is a rather stubborn undercurrent of the persecution complex in the fem Shep thread. People always like "rooting for the underdog," and in this case people seem to have latched onto the idea that female Shepard is being 'hidden' or discriminated against due solely to her gender, which is ridiculous. See the current title of their thread to get an idea of what I'm talking about.
In addition, I liken it to the Sims Syndrome: it is much easier to make an attractive custom female Shepard than it is a custom male and people like to show off 'their' Shepards to other like-minded individuals. I suspect we'd see a lot more 'Show off your Shepard - male version' posts in here if it were easier to make a sexy Shepard without having to resort to outside modding.
Another reason may be that people dislike the direction the voice of male Shepard, Mark Meer, was given or the look of the model for Shepard, Mark Vanderloo, and have turned that hatred onto male Shepard as a whole. The voice works as an actual soldier but for entertainment purposes he may come across as being a little wooden or flat for some people. Thankfully the Meer bashing has abated somewhat on the forums so I can at least read other threads without fear of having to read another bash session on my favorite voice actor. :-)
Don't get me wrong, I don't fault anyone for loving playing as a female because it is a great, great option to have; hell, I play as female Shepard myself. I just happen to personally prefer the look and sound of male Shepard over female Shepard.
