What am I doing wrong? Every thing costs multiple and sometimes hundreds of thousands of creds but any equipment I pick up I can only get ten credits for? wtf? lol

The quality of weapons (from I to X) you pick up depends on your level, I believe. I'm guessing you just started playing. At higher levels you'll have more money than you can spend.

When you're early on in the game you pick up stuff that is in the I-IV range, this stuff is fairly low value. Some of the merchants carry stuff in the VI-VIII range. This is much better equipment. Keep playing, run some side quests, and you'll start picking up better gear.
The only stuff to really look into buying are the spectre VII guns, that become available after you get the rich acheivement, at 1,000,000 credits and the spectre X guns at level 50+

Yeah just replaying the first one actually. I think by the time I had creds enough on my first play-through to buy weps, I was picking them up on quests. I was thinking I still must be doing something wrong with such a huge disparity in buy/sell prices.

You need to put points into paragon (store discount) or renagade (increased selling ability).
A quick and very dirty way to raise cash can be done on the citdel, once you have completed the doc's quest.
Sell gear to the doc, then buy it back (using the buyback option) from the volus. you should be able to buy it back for cheaper than what you sold it to her for. bear in mind this will only deal with teh last 20 pieces of gear you sell, so make sure you dnot start flogging off your good kit.
