Tali is a special case, her character has become rather inseparable from her astoundingly large fanbase. I find myself unable to appreciate the character on her own merits, all I see now when I look at her is an adolescent boy’s sexual fantasy. That’s unfortunate, because I don’t think that’s what the developers originally had in mind for the character. Though they should have known when they gave her those torso proportions that biology would take over and the game’s core audience demographic would respond as nature demands.

Clearly it wasn't what the developers had in mind, because in ME1 this kind of thing was not around. As a character Tali was not as interesting or well-developed, but in adding more backstory and depth to the character between ME1 and ME2, something went wrong and now we wind up with this...very bizarre community subset. For ME2 they made the character much more real and well-designed, which is a development choice I would have taken as well. But something in the midst of that clearly went wrong, because now it has become difficult to separate the character from the fanbase as you said (which is a real shame, because I used to hold the character and accompanying supporters in much higher regard). I don't think it's the fact that they made her an LI, because none of the others LIs have this weird community subset associated with them.

It seems that most of the Talimancers are underage.

Isn't 18 and less underaged?

You can be 60 and still be immature.

21 years old and voted for Tali. I think the reason there's so much hate for "Talimancers" is because like anything else in this world, the larger and more popular you become the more haters you see popping up. I was actually disappointed that Tali wasn't a LI in ME1 so ofcourse I rejoyced when I found out you can romance her in ME2. Like myself I'm pretty sure most of us Tali fans didn't just jump on the Tali bandwagon when we saw how popular she actually was.

Edit: Forgot to mention that Tali is only my favorite LI. I like the uniqueness of all the squadmates but Legion would have to be my favorite overall. I was fascinated with the Geth in ME1 and I've always been a fan of the Cylon, SkyNet, sentient AI type of stuff.

Certainly true, but that goes for everyone.

EVERY character's fanbase has a small percentage of extremists who simply go too damn far in their appreciation of the character.  Tali's fanbase is seemingly the largest, therefore she has the highest number of extremists (not necessarily the highest percentage).  Hence why the Tali-fanbase is the only one that gets generalized and shunned.

I've entered(and escapedImage IPB) the Migrant Fleet of Talimancers once, and what I saw was pretty extreme and creepy

Really?
On Garrus groups and threads i've seen much, much worse. You're just walkin' along and BLAM! Turian BananaImage IPB

Tali is one of my favourites but the fanbase does annoy me because it's so large meaning people want to diss Tali for no reason what so ever "Bcuz she popul3r!" I can see reasons people wouldn't like her but alot of the time it is just people wanting to annoy the massive fanbase.

Don't be too surprised if you see a lot of younger people voting for Tali.

Most of the votes for any of the female LI's are 25 or under.

Yeah. He should have made the poll Under 18, 18-26, Over 26. Most of the gamers (or at least forumgoers) are under 25.

Much like TaHol from earlier, romance is not one of the big draws to the game for me. Aside from interest in the character details you get when you pursue a romance, I'd probably have played through both games with no romance.

Looking at the results right now, they're not telling me who is the most popular so much as how each character's personality appeals to different demographics.

Is the survey limiting itself by making the division point 25? I suppose if you're under 25 years of age, you think it does because a 22 year old does not want to associate himself with the mind of a 16 year old. However, there is a limit to how many choices you can put in these polls on BSN. If I had to choose a division point because of that limitation, I'd have picked 24 or 25 years old. Why? Because if you're thinking of the usual (as in doesn't apply to everyone) division point of when someone has truly entered the world working under their own merits, we're looking past schooling (primary through university). That probably alters your perception just as much as developing hormones or maturity.

But back to the results, Tali does overwhelmingly appeal to the 25 and under demographic for males. That was a given to me. What does interest me is how Tali appeals to the female demographic in return. There's not many votes from women, but the votes are more evenly spread out among all the female love interests. And I'm not surprised to see that there is little appeal from the over 25 demographic. I like Tali, but her schoolgirl crush on Shepard and her giddiness remind me of a period of my life that I am glad to have left behind. She's a great friend. As a love interest, my tastes have moved on.

Looking at the male love interests, I am unsurprised to see Kaidan appealing to the over 25 female demographic -- though I suspect most people are surprised he has any appeal at all. I am equally unsurprised to see Garrus appeals to the 25 and under female demographic. But most of all, I'm unsurprised that Garrus appeals the male demographic by far. There isn't much of a leap from Garrus's bro status to romance in the game. And I see that Jacob still doesn't have any votes from the female demographic.

So where am I surprised so far? Surprised that Liara still runs a strong second to Tali given all the talk about her character from ME2, though I think the fact this poll comes after the announcement of Lair of the Shadow Broker might have helped her out a bit in this regard. Surprised that the votes for Thane are still low. Surprised that the votes for Miranda are still low -- her fanbase isn't that vocal on the forums, but I had always felt her fans still lurked in the shadows. Surprised no one yet has asked "Where's Morinth?"

Some of the differences in age demographics may come simply from how old the LI is. For instance, Thane appears to be quite old and so he appeals to an older audience. Tali is supposedly one of the younger characters, so she appeals to younger people.

Not sure how to explain Jacob's lack of support, but he always seemed like more of a "bro" character than an LI to me. More like a friend than a potential romance.

They should have kept him as the "bro" character.

I'm sure they could have made him a good LI. I sure hope they'll do something about it in ME3, then maybe I'd bother with Jacob...

But you have to admit, it's pretty damn funny Image IPB

Unless I'm mistaken, you're also a fan of anime? Because of all the characters I could see being transplanted to an anime environment, it would be Tali.

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have answered the question. Most people then assume you're a contemporary and discussion actually moves a lot easier.

I haven't checked, but I'm guessing the minimum age with parental consent is probably 13 years of age for the forum.

I belive its 18. These are M rated games. Anyway I'm under 25 and voted for Tali, must of been a sudden burst of immaturity that kept me from choosing one of the correct LIs.

Also the poll is sort of flawed because 25 and under can mean anything.

Yes, also the poll only gives the option of "over 25" or "under 25" .  What if you actually are 25?  That age is not included in the poll.

Then you can make a banner that says how you used to be apart of the community, but now you're just 25.
