Tali is a special case, her character has become rather inseparable from her astoundingly large fanbase. I find myself unable to appreciate the character on her own merits, all I see now when I look at her is an adolescent boy’s sexual fantasy. That’s unfortunate, because I don’t think that’s what the developers originally had in mind for the character. Though they should have known when they gave her those torso proportions that biology would take over and the game’s core audience demographic would respond as nature demands.
Clearly it wasn't what the developers had in mind, because in ME1 this kind of thing was not around. As a character Tali was not as interesting or well-developed, but in adding more backstory and depth to the character between ME1 and ME2, something went wrong and now we wind up with this...very bizarre community subset. For ME2 they made the character much more real and well-designed, which is a development choice I would have taken as well. But something in the midst of that clearly went wrong, because now it has become difficult to separate the character from the fanbase as you said (which is a real shame, because I used to hold the character and accompanying supporters in much higher regard). I don't think it's the fact that they made her an LI, because none of the others LIs have this weird community subset associated with them.
