17 (almost 18, five months boo yah) But I voted for Tali. I haven't read through all of posts, but I see the younger ones voted for Tali. I was wondering why..because honestly, her's is the most mature imo. Tali's romance is about the time they spent together and why looks don't matter. Its about the love, where rather say...Miranda is thoroughly liked for her engineered looks. Im have nothign against any of the other LI, and am currently trying on Jack's romance, I have already done Miranda's and Ashley and Liara's from ME1.

A note on the Liara Romance. I hated what she had turned out to be in ME2, and cheated on her. I really can't wait to see how it turns out in Liar of the Shadow Broker. Gotta live with my choices you know?

I like Jacob, but as an LI I go with Tali and I am not underage or a slobbering, creepy fan I just think she is fun.

I feel I am older but I don't think that really affects my decisions more so then I just recognize tropes and character traits faster I suppose.

I belive its 18. These are M rated games. Anyway I'm under 25 and voted for Tali, must of been a sudden burst of immaturity that kept me from choosing one of the correct LIs.

The poll actually does not say "I liked Tali the most because I'm too immature to choose one of the correct LIs." If you think it does, you're projecting.

However, I could understand someone dismissing the poll altogether because they feel age or gender has nothing to do with a character's appeal. The whole reason the poll was created was a discussion about how previous polls should be dismissed for not taking age and gender into account.

But then we could get really specific and say how many Bioware games you've played is a factor, your ethnicity could play a factor, where you live could play a factor, how many sisters you have could play a factor, whether you think Gogol Bordello is a good band can play a factor. Hell, the fact that it's even being done on the Bioware Social Network is going to skew the results drastically. And what do you get in the end? Correlation does not equal causation.

I wasn't dismising the poll. I was responding to the few people that made the "all Tali fans=immature teenagers or mentally unstable talimancers" comments earliar in the thread. Only the first part of my post reqarding the age requirement of the forum was actually directed at you, but I didn't reallly make that clear.

I'm a 17 lazy guy.. and never had an LI I mean, is a game, for me this kind of things are very weird, I mean, come on!! I have a real-life girlfriend, why I need to have a romance with a bunch of pixels?

PD (to Pacifien): Can you add the option of no LI in the poll?

Exactly, it's a game. It's just for fun.. nobody is thinking they are in a real romance with those pixels.

Or well...

At least, I hope they aren't

We Ancient Ones know that someday you young people will understand just why we don't share your tastes, and often disparage them. As we age, our priorities change. They just do. What seems exciting in youth often seems tiresome and silly upon reflection later in life.

Without trying to put down the intent of your post, I have to question a thing or two here. Does it actually make sense to blame younger people for liking what is targeted at them? It's akin to saying that childrens' shows should not exist because they are clearly targeting that demographic. Of course tastes change as one moves through life, but does that mean it's bad to recognize this while still enjoying things targeted at one's demographic? Breaking things down into an unrealistically exact sense, if I can clearly see that in precisely 5 years I will hate RPGs and never play them anymore, is there actually a problem with me enjoying them now in spite of that knowledge? Also, does it somehow harm other people if I do so?

I suppose much of my disdain for certain character types stems from my perception that people should be able to see through those characters' hooks, and not fall for them so blindly. When I play any game, I often find myself looking at the characters thinking "okay that one was created for this demographic, that one was created for this other demographic". I then make the informed decision whether to buy in to the character, knowing full well whether or not they were designed specifically to appeal to me. Some people seem to think that their adoration of a given character is 'just because'. No it isn't. A lot of research went into getting you to have that exact visceral reaction, don't kid yourself.

Exactly. Certain aspects of the game are targeted at different people; for instance, the dialogue and options are targeted at RPG fans while the combat is targeted at shooter fans. That's how the product is sold, but here's where I disagree: Just what is so wrong with enjoying the part of the game that targets one's demographic/tastes? If I'm a fan of hardcore real-time strategy, am I screwing up by playing Company of Heroes because it's clearly intended for hardcore RTS players? This analogy carries through to the characters of Mass Effect 2; certain characters are carefully tailored and aimed at you or me in order to draw us into the story, make us empathize with the characters and understand the situation, and whatnot. BioWare hit my soft spot with Legion because I love machines (among other reasons). I could list five specific reasons or more as to why I like Garrus and Tali along with him, and I'm sure you could argue that every last one of them is a hook aimed at my age/background for one reason or another. But...what's wrong with having those tastes, preferences, ideals? Individuality should not be a necessity for someone to be fairly noticed.

Unless, of course, you're just saying you like that BioWare made a character you enjoy, in which case this post should be disregarded. Just not sure what you're trying to say here.

I think this thread was a good idea. It shows that one's station in life has some bearing on the character types one favors. One person's "boring, whiney" is another person's "deep, layered", just as one person's "badassss!" is another person's "tired cliché". *snip*

I actually had very different expectations for certain characters based on their portrayal in advertisement versus in-game. I actually figured Jack and Grunt would fall under tired cliché. Um... and they probably still do. But Grunt's voice acting, his conversations when Shepard talks to him on the ship, he comes across as more than just your typical chest-thumping blood raged krogan. Which is funny, 'cause his whole loyalty mission had to do with that blood rage... What was my point again?

Anyway, I suppose going into detail about what I think of every single character and where I take my age and gender into account is a bit too lengthy for this thread and easy for derailment. It's already easy enough for this thread to fall into a Talimancer versus the world argument.

I created a new poll for the non-romanceable squadmates. It flounders a bit toward the end since the options run at at 20 when I needed 24 to include Kasumi and Zaeed in the same manner as I did the others. I did include them, but age doesn't come up. If you do vote for them, including age in the comments would be nice.

It's obviously not a substitute for real-life romance anymore than the in-game job of being a space marine is a substitute for my real life job. I enjoy being immersed in the story of the game, and romance is a part of that story, just as it generally is a part of any story, whether it be a movie, novel, tv show, etc.

Anyway, I fall into the older category (though just barely) and I went with Miranda, although part of my decision is based on the fact that I can see a bit of two former girlfriends in the personalities of Jack and Liara.

For the non-romance I went with Mordin because I find his dialogue quite funny and entertaining, but Legion would be a second choice.

Heck yeah!  He was the one I wanted to romance in ME 1, but that option wasn't available.
