For multiplayer just make sure you got the latest version of the game (1.69) and both the expansions (Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark).

Also the latest version of the Community Expansion Pack (CEP 2.3).

That will get you in to most of the online servers.

Naturally some servers might be using custom hak files or the other hak-pak called Project Q....but what I wrote above is probably enough most of the times...

If you are having problems updating the game with the built in updater you can try to download the critical rebuild patches.

Links to some great content there, but I would not nessisarily call some of them essential. ProjectQ, is not essential, but a nice addition to the game. The CEP would almost qualify as essential, seeing as how it is a requirement for alot of PWs. The heads are nice, but certainly not essential for a game. Unless of course this is the list of what needs to be dl to play your mod, then I take back the essential part, and ask why you did not include to play this mod in the title?

Genisys, he was just giving some constructive criticism fer crying out loud!

...missing CEP in the original post was probably not a good thing as it is probably more "essential" than any of the other things listed....

But yes...good post all in all of course. Can we now keep this thread clean!?!?

It is supposed to be a thread where new players can check in on important stuff...so please stop posting crap!

Thanks for taking the time to redo this previously stickied thread JML <3

The new board does make the colours and smilies and layout more fun, I like how you presented it. :)

(Btw guys, CEP and project Q are mentioned in the original post due to their scope I assume, but it's primarily a list of overrides aimed at the single player, not required haks for the module. Many of them do work in an MP environment of course, but things like heads and animations wouldn't be seen by the other players so they can't be recommended, nor could the various cheating tools etc etc. There was a loong discussion on the previous board as to what should be included and the focus was always SP.)

Have fun :)

*1) I personally have never seen a major issue with Tony K's AI anywhere in NWN. Only... some beloved "perfectionist" type of community modules authors created their very personnal AI and playing those with Tony K’s one might not be the proper and most respectful way to go. About a second « No Tony K’s AI »override folder, eventually by using that *24, NWNLauncher? So, I'd recommend installing Tony K’s AI at the very end of that list. And also reading the "Read me" coming with any single module before playing it...
*10) Use the NonShawdowVersion only! N°35 is my fav girl one. Eyes and lips colors can be change by using *3, Customize Character, by Kamiryn: [Modify body > change color > tatoo 1 & 2]. A must have for those who like playing (with) girls. And enjoy new NPCs as well...
*12) NWShader wiki
*22) PGC3 v4.4 Beta is the one I’m using, especially to perform *31, Shia’s trick in game.
*28) The best way for me (Mac player = No toolset) to “add” some keen senses to your human PC for instance, but not only... Everything... (but the skills, buggy!).
Also, check on this Project Q Site

About CEP: My personal trick: I simply installed all the CEPs versions I could find here, from the earliest one to the latest, in that very order, and was able since to play any official or community module I came across without any
problem or conflict... so far.
**************************************

And don’t worry: Mods don’t bite! I mean, rarely...

Acknowledgements:

Thanks to all of you, NWN lovers, who’ve been so nicely helping, in many different ways, for the making of this list and with all my due respect to the original thread, and its contributors.

Now, enjoy NWN!

EDIT: I just posted JML's list here up higher for him so people do not have to scroll so far down.

@ Shia

Yes Shia, I must say it looks pretty nice under that new forum style.

And as you said, there was already a long and rough discussion about that list in the past, but no kill. ‘kind of miss it actually.

The discussion of course...

 Some thoughts, but french. <3:devil:

To all:

Feel free to use that thread for any update or any interesting add-on you really feel, and I mean really, should belong here.
It seems I’m still able to edit my 1st part, so I could take care of it, as long as it stays open to the little me once it goes sticky, and if I’m not away.

Beside, as we all know by now how much that new forum could get very jumpy, when it comes to editing, I won’t be able to do it at every request. But I will, as well as I can.

Now, a bit of history here: I named that list from the original one, by sinistas, one he called « Essential add-ons/mods. » You know where to find him for any complain... ;)

And I’m must confessed, not being a native english writer... I simply found it much safer that way.
That is how I play NWN today, in 2010, and NWN is kind of essential to me, so I found that thread being essential... as much as anything about gaming could be.
This is just a game after all.
But, as a very respectful player, that’s my way of paying my due respects to it, and its many contributors.

I’m really thinking big time about CEP of course, only CEP is not « override » which this list is (mostly) about, and many people didn’t agree, in the past, having it in here.
That’s why I almost decided... to give it a better position. I play, as so many of us, NWN with CEP, so CEP will be. As well as some reminder about the 1,69 update.
I’m no God, just acting like one.

Anyway, so far, that thread has not been stickied yet, so... ‘about holding our horses for a (short) while.
Aside, no flaming would be fine.

Remember, this thread is 100% yours, but for the new players... and some old ones as well...
I will use it myself, next time I reinstall NWN, as I just did. ‘worked like a charm.
I’m that good.
Just like anybody else.
I didn’t make that list, I simply wrote it. Let's consider it as a delivery.
Anything I learned here, I learned it from you, players, modders, and writers.
In this very welcoming forum.
I thought it was time to pass it on.

My best regards to all the NWN players.
Et je vous embrasse, surtout les filles

I am not going to deny a need for this topic, or even the need for a good list of links to the list above. The problem I see here is one of the use of language, Essential, could be interpited as Required, As in you must have these to play the game, for those who are new to NWN. The list itself is either out of date, or about to be out of date, as C.E.P.2.3 has added a number of things, and has plans to add Chico400s work aswell.

I don't agree. As Shia Luck and jmlezemaggo stated it's a list of overrides to enhance your gameplay experience in single player mode. As such CEP doesn't come into the equation here. Yes, NWNCQ will be added to CEP but that won't help you if you play the OC or any other campaign/module that wasn't made with CEP. You'd still need the overrides if you want the new tilesets to appear in-game.

As I said, that list "might" stay open for any update. It's up to anyone around to keep it as fresh as possible.
Just post about anything new, right here.
I remember one thing I thought when I first started is NWN many jewels being very hard to locate.
That list is nothing but a pathetic attempt to put them together in one single place.
And it's not out of date for the most part. Could someone tell that french Chico guy to slow down a bit, maybe. He won't ? I knew it. Great!
Now, I found your questionning about that "essential" word important. My problem, is being french, I couldn't come up with a better one. And you made a real point about that "required" idea.
Olivier leroux already suggested "most popular" instead. What do guys you think?
Only I can see already some people coming saying these add-ons are not popular to them...
I never thought this would be the hardest part of the job.
I feel like working, almost.

Yes which makes it kinda a Catch 22...perhaps changing the terms to Enhancement Add Ons would not be too bad of an idea.

I am sure Shova is not trying to slam anyone just trying to enhance the forums for any newbs we entice into our nets....

Imagine buying the game and coming here and going oh...I need more stuff?

I think the topic could do with a name change as well.

What is essential to some, isn't always essential to others, and often reflects personal prefrences.

I never considered any of you here as slammers, or flamers, but helpers, respectable forumers.
Including SHOVA <3, as a matter of fact, short for AAMOF, SHOVA being to me one who made actually a really good point, on the contrary.
I love good points as they make my life even more complicated. :alien:
One important clue here: Fight is just another word for love in french. I didn't say war.
My and now maybe your first concern is about the new players. :P
I simply want them to access the Holy Graal a bit faster than Galahad and myself :innocent:.

So, that said, about a title, you, sons of Shakespear and Melville! As I'm afraid Beaumarchais is not going to be of any help to me here. But he spent half of his life helping you... :D 'see what I'm mean?
Being french, therefore twisted, to me Essential meant we all know it's not essential of course. It's a joke, about how nothing, empty, none we are. Useless. Unessential, as a matter of fact, short for... Hell, you should know that by now.

About simply "NWN add-ons" or maybe "NWN add-ons for beginners"
Adding below: "Another way to enjoy NWN in 2010, (or the 2010 NWN)".
Yet, they're gonna be too proud to even click on it. We all know what a NWN player is about, even à new one: fame.
- I'm desperate. That task you gave me Lord is way out of my reach...
  I have failed you.
What? Again? Those are harsh words, my liege. But you're right, I know, and I'm sorry...

One very last word: HELP!
And you won't hear from me again... I promise. :innocent::whistle::police:
Just thinking... Perhaps, it would be easier to have this whole forum in french... What? Oh, okay, I shut up. B)

Please, jml, don't be quiet for long. We need you here and owe you our thanks for this wonderful list of wonderful add-ons. B)

While a title change is likely a good idea, a simple compromise variation may do. Perhaps something akin to "NWN community's favorite add-ons" would convey the value of these improvements without making it seem as though they are necessary for anyone to have.

As well as I couldn't live without music, I'm not supprised a bard came up with those words... Let see now:

"NWN community's favorite add-ons"

And you know what, I could put my life at stake for it... no one's asking?... Great... because it's got the word community in it and that's a fine word among the finest.
Do we all agree or is there anyone  complaining... again? :police: Feel free! :police:
Fire up! 24 jours remaining...
Starting... now.

Thanks to the music, I shall go dancing tonight. & thanks for your time, Bard Simpson, I like the way you compromise...

Now, my next step is gonna be to ask the <3 board <3 here to turn the Stickies back into gold, but that's gonna be the easy part... don't you think?
You're not over with me yet...

There it is, as well as I could make it, fighting with this :sick::sick: post editor for 1 hour. It doesn't like at all the re-edit, neither the copy/past.

So is any mod around could be willing to make a Sticky out of that post above, I would appreciate and finally get back to my regular job... :bandit:

And :kissing: please :kissing:, make sure to write it under that new title:

"NWN community's favorite add-ons"

'hope you won't have to use it, otherwise, good luck with the editor, I sincerely hope it's gonna be easier for you. ;)

Thanks to all. (Why is this part coming out in bold/italic reminds a mistery to me...)

:o I just noticed the title credit in the first post. Shucks, jml, you didn't need to do that; it was just a simple bit of wordplay (and wordplay is, as you have already stated, just what bards do :D). Your graciousness is only enhanced by the fact that this wasn't necessary. Thank you very much, oh great compiler. :innocent:
