Do they even exist in Thedas? I don't remember hearing or reading about them and they certainly didn't make an appearance.

Whether they exist or not would featuring mounts in DA2 be a good idea as an alternate method of combat and faster travel? We have those creatures the elves use though I don't think they ride them.

Unless horses are mythical beasts, it would be pretty weird for Oghren to ask for a "pony" in Awakenings if they did not exist in Thedas.

Horses are actually mentioned on a few occasions - for example, when you're dealing with the halla in the Dalish camp, there's a dialogue option to liken them to horses. Oghren also lists hitting horses as one of the proper uses of a pike. (As opposed to, uh, twirling them.) And yet we never see any pole arms or any equines in the whole game, DLC and expansion!

The merchant in Sulcher's Pass tantalisingly mentions that he has a mule, but it's run off so we never actually witness this fabulous beast. They're more mythical than griffons.

My only theory is that the Darkspawn ate every horse, donkey and mule in Ferelden.

Maybe that's why they didn't speak....

THEY ATE THEMSELVES HOARSE!

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week.

Actually, it was a war of mutual extinction between equines and griffins (or griffons, or gryphons, or whichever spelling you prefer.)

Unless the environments opened up a bit, I don't see the need for horses for traveling purposes. In DA1, you went from destination to destination by clicking the icon on the map. Unless you wanted to rush through the deep roads, for instance, and run past all of the darkspawn, I don't see where horses would come in.

I'd like to see horses, but unless DA2 was more open, perhaps like how Oblivion was, they would serve little purpose. Perhaps they could make appearances in cut scenes or would just stand around near a stable?

Well models would be good enough. As Andrastee joked we don't get to see them at all! You'd expect them to be very common in a medieval setting. Why didn't the army at Ostagar deploy any cavalry as the flanking force for example.

This explains everything, no more horses or griffons. Time to learn to ride brontos, or nugs (if you don't respect yourself).

horses could really be of use for warriors that have trouble approaching a target fast enough for the kill

Horses are in the books all the time and you don't even see one in the game. Now that's just ridiculous.

This question gets asked a lot, and the only reasoning I can think of is that horses are an Orlesian thing--the Chevalier are mentioned several times as using horses. Ferelden has a distaste for all things Orlesian, and the only horses the country had seen came from Orlais during the occupation (that, or the identification between horses and Orlesians were very strong). When they kicked Orlais out, they kicked the horses out with them.

That's my guess, at least.

Actually Gaider said they had intended to have horses featured in the game such as at ostagar but they were cut for time and because they offered to little benefit. But yes if you read the book I am pretty sure they are used extensively in stolen throne and therefore do exist.
