The Citadel Council presumably? They are the ones who make the call of who gets to be a spectre or not. Admiral Hackett, Captain Anderson and Ambassador Udina were discussion who they thought would be the best one.

Two problems here.
1. Why in the world would the Council listen to their recommendation? They don't seem to believe a damn thing we say to them without shoving their faces in proof.
2. Nihlus tells you he put your name forward for consideration, and the recommendation of another Spectre seems a far more likely "in" than that of some random Alliance brass and the Ambassador whose very job description is "push human interests".

Well they obviously thought well enough of the Alliance and of you in general to make you a spectre. I thought it was clear that Udina was invovled with the Council in choosing the process of selecting first human spectre prior to their final decsion. It was certainly something that was significant enough to warrent a lot of careful consideration by both the galaxy's leaders and the leaders of the species they chose. Otherwise, was it just a coincidence that Nihlus and Udina chose Shepard at the same time to save the galaxy?

Well it sounded like Shepard was the second human Spectre, so it was prob Andersons recommendation to the Alliance.

I just don't think EVERYTHING is always a conspiracy.

As a matter of fact, I would be highly disappointed if they took this route, as it is lazy writing. Once again the hero has been manipluated throughout every step of his life by this shadowy organization with hard-to-define nefarious goals so much so that even his closest friends and colleages were all just Cerberus plants to ensure the unwitting hero acted the way we wanted him to! {evil laugh}

I just find it more credible and realistic that what Joker, Doc Chak, Ashley/Kaiden, Liara, Tali, and Garrus tells you is the truth and that after Shep died the Alliance tried to pretty things up, swept people who wouldn't hush up away and disgruntled former ace-fliers took a gig where they could do what they loved to do instead of sitting behind a desk shuffling papers and being spoon-fed BS.

Too many conspiracies spoil the soup. Posted Image

What was really strange, was that if you talked to Ashley in ME1 her human first perspective was right in line with a group like Cerebus and she seems to hate them the most in 2.

Its just my impression of Jokers role in Shepards story but it doesn't feel like Jokers style to hide, manipulate and spy. He likes to pilot a great ship and help his friend Shepard, if it's the Alliance or Cerberus who pays the bills matters less to him.

The whole "make the call" thing was most probably a reference to the Council. I really don't think Udina was referring to anyone else. Admiral Hackett was with him at the time as well, so it couldn't have been him.

As for Joker, well, highly doubtful.

But did you notice anything strange about his reactions.  They often kept his head moving a little as if he was talking in his head.  I don't know how long ago you played ME1, but it's more prdominate in that game.  It seems almost blatent as if we're supposed to notice.

I just played both again and going over the footage, I noticed that Joker constantly had brief unspoken comments whenever Aliens or Alien power was concerned.  It might have just been arrogance, but If you watch both games back to back you begin to see he's possibly the most racist person in the game.  It may have all been my imagination and I'm going to put together a little video compilation on youtube with pop ups of what I think he might be saying or implying.  I think he was an agent of Cerebus from the get go.

He had tears in his eyes when the asari of the destiny ascension died...

I doubt that he was a racist in the first game.

Perhaps Miranda or Jacob approached Joker after he was docked and the Normandy destroyed to tell him about the plans for Shepard, and that they needed his piloting skills. Simply, the Council turned its back on Joker and the threat of the Reapers. Cerberus motives were questionable, and resurrecting Shepard was a huge risk. But I'm guessing Joker didn't want to sit on his ass and become Reaper chow. And he must've contacted Dr. Chakwas, who felt the same way and didn't want to lose connections to a crew member who she had a personal and medical relationship with.

I'm not sure why, I got the impression that Cerebus were the one' s that picked up the remnants of the old crew.  I guess I thought that because they must have gotten to Shepard pretty damn fast.  Maybe they didn't need to and picked him up at leasure.  But that was my impression.

Doubtful.

I suspect that Cerberus attempted to contact Normandy crew who they felt would be more loyal to Shepard than to the Alliance. They probably suspected that Shepard might be distrustful of Cerberus, and in order to make him/her more comfortable they wanted people Shepard knew.

Or just dumptrucks of cash works too. The doc seems to have quite a taste for rare and expensive beverages...

I'm willing to entertain the notion because as much as the game is about the obvious themes, there's a cyclical nature to it. So much either is, or can be easily taken as in retrospect, foreshadowing that I feel paying careful attention to everything has a lot more to reveal than we think.

I've been recently fixated on "You're not even alive; not really. You're a machine, and machines can be broken." as it connects to ME2.

Ya, technically every living thing is SOME type of machine, and it's obviously self aware and alive.  Reapers are what happens when biological civilizations are left to indefinatly grow technologically.  Your left with nothing else to do but cultivate gardens of biologicals to keep yourself alive.  Reapers are proof that the universe SHOULD be wiped every now and again.

...I meant more in the context of "rebuilt from the dead with Cerberus implants" Shepard.

Anyone else reminded of Shutter Island after reading this thread? Maybe the whole thing is a role play, and the Reapers are Shepard's invention!

Joker mentions the Alliance effectively grounded him after the events of ME1... to Joker that's about the worst thing you can do. I presume Cerberus then went after him, because "he's the best". Joker isn't going to turn them down if they let him fly :P

I don't see how that (which is what he tells you himself) could be a fabrication or something. Chakwas is more ambiguous though.

He wasn't really, he just didn't trust Nihlus and voiced his opinion about it, which I think had more to do with him being a Spectre than him being a Turian, though I could be wrong. That was the impression I got, anyway.
