I'm just curious. Cite a reason as well, do you take a certain character everywhere for a role playing reason? Feel free to include Shale, but no characters from Awakening.

Two-handed Warrior with Alistair, Leliana and Wynne. A classic party consisting out of Damage-dealer, tank, ranged rogue (with nice buffs for the party) and a healer. A very realiable setup.
Another one was my nuker mage with Morrigan (also nuking), Oghren and Zevran. A party to make the deep roads as fast as possible.

I have a similar set up, but instead of Alistair I have Dog, so my char (a warrior with a sword and board), Leliana on ranged DPS, and Wynne. Tried it with Morrigan instead of Wynne. Doled out a helluva lotta damage.

I've played the most with a 2-2, which means 2 ranged (archer/mage) and 2 melee (dw rogue/warrior). I liked to have a certain balance in the party. I've occasionally used a 1-3. Lately, though, I've experimented with some crazy set-ups like 0-4 and 4-0.

Same as follis2. A group with three melee tends to have an odd man out, since three is too much of a crowd around an enemy. The exception would be if I'm using a dedicated tank.

Leliana (for opening chests) as an archer (set up as bard/ranger), and Wynne (for healing, and dually specialised as an arcane warrior so she can wear heavy armour) usually find their way into the team.
With my arcane warrior/blood mage, the fourth member was Alistair for tanking purposes.
With my warrior, the fourth member was Morrigan, as a bloodmage/shapeshifter (with utterly devastating consequences).
With my rogue, who was a dual sword wielder by the end, the fourth was Morrigan, set up (badly) as an arcane warrior and shape shifter. She had some good spells, but was a bit rubbish.
With my mage I also had some success with Leliana (archer, Bard/Ranger), Zevran (dual weapon, Assassin/Duelist), and Dog. Dog rocks. :-)
Never usually bother with Oghen, Shale or Sten. They're good - very good - at what they do. But so's Alistair and if you don't want him there's always 'puppy!' to rely on.

my best so far has been running a dual wield rogue with Allistar, dog, and Morrigan, makes pretty quick work of anything i've come accross as well as getting all the chests

I've been doing 2 range (archer or mage) + 2 melee (Tank , damager, or rogue)
Maybe on my next playthrough I'll just do an all melee party with auto attack on. ;D They will bot their way through nightmare mode for sure.

This is true. With my all-melee party my PC and the companions fight with each other as much as with the enemies. Everyone in the party wants the best position to whack the enemy.

My party consists of:
Wynne everywhere for healing (I visit the circle just after Lothering to pick her up)
Alistair everywhere because he's always my romantic interest and I love having him around lol (except the last section of the Deep Roads since I like to have Shale along for that)
Random (except when I am playing something other than a Rogue and then it's Leliana for the chests)
Wynne everywhere for healing (I visit the circle just after Lothering to pick her up)

What I've found in groups with 4 melee, is it ends up being more effective to split them into pairs (Sten attacks Ogrhen's target, Zevran attacks PC's target).

I like to play as a 2 hander with Sten, Leli, and Mori usually.
For the first few months I always took Alistair along because he was another warden but that stopped. I'm not really sure why, it just seemed like the thing to do, and besides, in the sacred ashes trailer the warden is fighting alongside Sten, not Ali.
I always spec my mages as Arcane warriors, just so they can wear better armor once they get to that level.
The mix of 1 rogue, 1 mage, and a couple of 2 hand warriors seems to do just fine on hard level and suits my temperament and playstyle.

I find that Alistair (Tank), Leliana and Wynne are the 'easy' team. This was the team I used on my second, easiest playthrough. This was with a mage character. I've also run it with a DW warrior and it was equally easy. Since then I tend to mix it up a lot. My current team is Rogue PC, Sten, Zevran and Wynne as AW Tank.

Alistair sucks. Sorry. SNS sucks as a tree. Tanking is much better done by a AW/BM.
PC: AW/BM
Morrigan: SS/SH
Wynne: SH/BM
Leliana: Bard/Ranger
Anyone remotely familiar with the game sees how rigged that party is. Morrigan and Wynne heal the PC, who generally rapes with aoe spells and blood magic. Leliana sits back and sings and summons pets.

>Alistair sucks.
Tanks primary role is not survival, but to keep aggro off the party. AW/BM cant do that reliably w/o Taunt. Even Sten is better than AW/BM. You need 2 mages(half the party) to heal the PC, shows there is something wrong with that tank and party balance in general. Then again, DA enemies have low res and very few resist blood wound. Facing something more resistable and that party would be dead in seconds.

I don't believe in close combat. Too messy. I play either a mage or a rogue. Favorite team: Leliana, Morrigan and Wynne. The other characters require too much effort to keep them alive. Currently having fun as a dualist. This allows me to play a ranged character and when it does get messy I can switch to a blade and dagger. When I play a mage then the arcane warrior allows me to get rid of annoying stuff up close.

@nc:
With two healers (Three, if you count the heal from the PC) it doesn't matter who takes the damage - it always gets healed. If you're not healing, all three of them can dps for some serious damage. Leliana plays the regen song, which lets everyone regenerate mana quickly.
With that party setup, I didn't even get to blood wound. It was too boring to play, because I flat out dominated everything, even on nightmare.
Edit:
And Alistair DOES suck. There isn't a single skill in the SNS tree worth taking. Even Archery is better...

I always have Alistair in the party. I probably would even if I didn't like him as much as I do. It seems to me that the last two Grey Wardens should always be there, and besides that, he's always my PCs best friend or LI, so they're together for that reason, too. It doesn't hurt one bit that he's my best fighter, either. He's generally the last one standing.
Apart from Alistair and the PC, (both Sword and Shield) the game is easiest if I take Wynne and Morrigan. I rarely do that, though, as it's almost too easy, so I usually take one or the other, leaving a spot for Sten, Oghren, or Leliana. I love Dog, but I don't tend to use him except in the early game. One of these days, I'm going to try a party of the PC, Alistair, Morrigan, and Dog, throughout.
I used to usually take Sten, but now I'm trying Oghren or Leliana.
If I really want to give myself a challenge, I take the PC, Alistair, Leliana, and Oghren.
Over all, though, my party is PC, Alistair, Wynne/Morrigan, Sten/Oghren/Leliana. I'd take Shale (and will do somethime), but the sound of a golem running can be a bit wearing.

I mix my party up for each playthrough but my best party was a sword n' board human warrior with Alistair running additional tank support, Leliana dual-wielding weapons with as many of the best paralyzing runes possible and Wynn healing with some nuking on the side.
Tbh I don't build parties based on how well they'd operate in combat, but based on who my character would take with him/her.

It depends what class my PC is, but for my DW rogue PC I took Alistair as S&S tank, Morrigan as nuker and Wynne as healer most of the time. On my nuker mage PC I took Alistair as S&S tank, Wynne as healer and Sten as 2H damager (of course). I froze stuff a lot with cone of cold and Alistair and Sten were my shatter buddies.
When I was fighting high dragons though, I switched Shale in as tank with fire crystals equipped, and swapped Leliana for Morrigan for Flemeth and ranged them down. Shale is amazing as a dragon tank.
I could probably get away with a less traditional party setup but as a longtime MMO player it just feels natural I guess.

My ideal set up on Nightmare, which I almost always run with is...
Shield Warrior
DW Warrior or Dog/Shale
DW Rogue
Mage specced for pure support. Provides healing and haste + weapon buff for party. No CC, no AoE, etc.
This set up tears through bosses and requires no CC - just interrupts.

For me my best party was my pc as a dual wielding warrior for melee dps, Alistair as tank, Leliana as my archer and rogue, and Morrigan for spell casting. Got me through most all of the game.

I usually go with two warriors, a rogue and a mage. Sometimes two rogues, a warrior and a mage. Occasionally three warriors and a rogue. Less often two warriors and two rogues. All told, I've been known to use pretty much every possible combination, so long as it involves no less than one rogue, and no more than one mage.
I've never gone with three rogues, but that's only because I haven't allowed Zevran into my party since my first playthrough, in which I was a warrior.

last run through of the game was
pc: 2-hander
alistair as tank, lelina as archer, rogue, and wyne as healer, all characters got along well, and beat the game.
This playthrough I'm trying my pc as an arcane warrior along with alistair and lelina and shale.
