Alistair sucks. Sorry. SNS sucks as a tree. Tanking is much better done by a AW/BM.

PC: AW/BM
Morrigan: SS/SH
Wynne: SH/BM
Leliana: Bard/Ranger

Anyone remotely familiar with the game sees how rigged that party is. Morrigan and Wynne heal the PC, who generally rapes with aoe spells and blood magic. Leliana sits back and sings and summons pets.

Three mages breaks the game, yes.

Incidentally, Strength-built sword and board warriors come awfully, awfully close to the burst potential of Strength-built two-handers with much more survivability.  Sword and board doesn't suck, it's simply nowhere near as broken as mage stacking.

Main as a healer and just a healer (with crushing prison if attacked in melee) as it makes it a ton easier for me to keep an eye on everything.

Alistair as my tank.

Sten as DPS though still trying to figure out why he gets hit so hard when I have no taunt on him as it all on Alistair.

And Morrigan, suprisingly as she hates all my decisions to help people.

It works out quite well as I'm getting better at taking my time and pausing when I have to.

This one worked excellently for me:

Me - DW Rogue (sometimes switching to ranged - the Spear-Thrower kicks some serious ***)
2 Warriors (Alistair / Oghren / Sten)
Wynn - because of the healing

My second playthrough:

Main: Mage - spirit healer/blood mage.

Allistair - Tank with champion.

Wynne with blood mage.

Leliana with dual wield.

Normal was a breeze. Next run will be on difficult.

Alistair, Wynne , and shale. Its hard for me to break from that group. I've also had a lot of success with substituting Wynne for Leliana. Come to think of it I hardly use Wynne anymore.

I would love to use Morrigan more, but I never do cuz she always dislikes the things I do.

i'd sneak in with rogue, take up a position at the back,
morrigan would kick things off with a spell,
dog would cc the mobs she aggrod as i ambushed the mages/lieutenants,
and oghren would wade in from the rear, mopping up on his way to final blow the boss.
a thing of beauty.

1) Female Mage (elementalist)

2) Leliana (duel wielding daggers with master/expert paralyze runes)

3) Morrigan (spirit/entropy tree)

4) Wynne (healer/spirit tree)

Mages do crowd control. Leiliana dishes it out. Ladies rule! :)

At the second most difficult setting, enemies fall quicker to magic than to swords.

current game would be:

1) PC DW R

2) Sten DW

3) Alistar S-S / Shale

4) Morrigan - Arcane Mage/Spirit Healer

and yes used potions of Respecialization on most characters.

Usually end up with Alistair (champion/templar), Morrigan(Shapeshifter perhaps SH) and Leliana (bard / ranger).. Morrigans / Alistairs banters is just to hilarious to miss out on

Never used shale, only once did her companion quest, Zevran is sometimes pretty in camp but most often he dies. Wynne is beginning to get that idea too, about dying that is. Sten is great, if only I had room for a 2 handed warrior in party. Oghren can die in hell though I usually keep him around for the final battle along with Sten and Dog.

In my first playthrough I was a mage with mostly nutrelizing spells and my party consisted of Alistair, Liliana and Wynne because all the others where jerks (Didn't have Dog or Shale).
Wynne would ressurrect, Liliana would backstab and Alistair would take all the damage. I was butchered half the time. :P

Heh, that would be funny... And Alistair with reaver.

The fact that they even tolerate the main character using those "evil" abilities is surprising.

Let's see, my first completed run looked something like this:
Human Warrior PC: Templar/Champion - I think I did it in that order. Anyway, she was Sword and Shiled and made a hell of a primary tank, in my opinion.
Wynn: Spirit Healer - I don't think I ever gave her another specialization. She was focused on buffing, healing, and a little bit of damage support. I had to control her manually half the time because her tactics made her burn through mana and chug potions like they were soda.
Lelianna: Bard/Duelist - Pretty sure that's what it was. She was my archer/unlocky things support.
Alistair: Templar/... maybe Berzerker? - Al was mostly a support tank/extra melee, as he lagged way behind my PC's development. Sometimes I swapped him out for Oghren when I got him, but he was there most of the time.
Needless to say, that was my goody-two shoes game, as well.

My most recent game, it wasn't really that different.
Elf Mage: Spirit Healer/Arcane Warrior - The full creation line (I'm going for the acheivements, don't hurt me). He was actually kindof fun to play, keeping the tougher baddies out of the fight until the trash mobs were delt with. I ended up putting him into melee near the end of the game once he got all the AW talents, though looking back, it wasn't the greatest idea.
Alistair: Alistair was my main tank up until the end of the game when something happened that I can't reveal in the no spoiler forum. However, I'll say that it wasn't worth it.
Lelianna: Bard/Ranger - Ranged DPS again, I built her much more to my satisfaction this time, and she was still awesome at spotting and disabling traps.
Zeveran: Assassin/Duelist - Dual Weild stabby death. I brought Zev along since he was my PC's Love Intrest, and he was surprisingly more moral than I expected him to be, so it worked out.

I tend to select my parties based on a combination of factors between the kind of character I'm roleplaying, what class/spec I'm using, and who the LI is.  Not sure how my next playthrough is gonna go. I might try out Shale as a tank. Or a respeced Sten, using the respec mod.

My most powerful group run ever was 3 Dual Wield warriors + 1 Arcane Warrior/blood mage with Haste and other buffs.

2 dual wield warriors + 1 cunning dual wield rogue with Song of courage + 1 Arcane warrior/blood mage with haste works too, since the bard song increases the crit rates and stuff. i would prefer this group set up if you don't want to use the bash lock mod, and for healing i just consume pots. With a dps set up like this, my enemies don't stay alive long enough to do serious damage anyways. The downside of this set up is your rogue will experience the momemtum  + haste bug. So either you can't use momemtum or you will have to get your mage to debuff it. That is why i also tried the third group set up below

arcane warrior/blood mage with Haste + Arcane warrior/spirit healer with haste+ duel wield cunning rogue + duel wield warrior. That way your warrior and rogue will have maximum attack speed and you also save talent points for not going down the Momemtum tree. You also get some extra heals which is nice.

Always let your warriors activate precise strike (i think it's called that, the one that sacrafices attack speed for attack and crit rate), it makes alot difference.

I know right! I never give a squadmate a specialization that is out of character

Second playthrough:

PC - Mage/Spirit Healer/Blood Mage

Alistair, once again - Tank Templar/Champion

Shale as dps

Zevran - Assassin/Ranger
