Orlais and all the other nations were spared the Fifth Blight, but there is a time period after every Blight called the Thaw or something, when the Grey Wardens go off and try to hunt down the now disorganized darkspawn on the surface, who did spread to Orlais and the Free Marches as TheFaceless93 stated.

Any darkspawn up there could be from the Silent plains, from what I recall the Silent plains have been tainted ever since the first blight.
Never heard of The Silent Plains. Can anyone explain just what that is?

Interesting theories.
The only thing I'll say is that the Silent Plains are where the climactic battle of the First Blight took place-- they've remained tainted ever since, a permanently blighted place.
