As far as scabbards go, would you actually be able to sheathe a greatsword onto your back easily? I would think the human arm simply isn't long enough, so you'd have to remove the scabbard every time you sheathe and unsheathe.

Good point, but it can be solved like this:

I don't necessarily care about sheaths or scabbards but I do want characters to at least have belts or straps as part of clothing and armor so it looks more realistic when a weapon is magnetized.

How would you solve the mage's staves and other two handed weapons then, I wonder?

Some suggestions:

Staves:
Either these could be constantly carried in the hand and just used as a walking stick when out of combat, or some kind of sling arrangement similar to what is found on modern day hunting rifles could be fashioned.

Axes/hammers/maces/etc.:
Depending on weapon type and size, either a reverse version of the sword scabbard that I posted (i.e. with the head of the weapon up top) or a belt loop similar to this: www.mcguirenicholas.com/products-2005/52-08.jpg

Bows: Either just slung as they are, or in a scabbard similar to this: www.by-the-sword.com/acatalog/bts-2360t.jpg

Crossbows: With a sling like a modern day rifle has.

This list is by no means exhaustive, it's just intended to present some ideas. With a bit of imagination I think most of these issues would fall into place.

Going by the E3 interview, that's very similar to what CDProjekt RED have done for Wiedzmin 2 when Geralt sheathes his blades.

As for axes, staves etc, they could be put into a harness or a sling, I suppose.

Oblivion did it perfectly fine and that game is 4 years old. Common Bioware keep up with the times!

Unmodded Oblivion doesn't have sheaths, it has floating weapons like DAO, just held at the side instead of the back. It's less noticeable, but only because there are no cutscenes with different camera angles that would draw attention to it.

I'm pretty sure it had sheaths. And even if it was mods my point stands.

I think Oblivion only has sheaths for Long Swords and Shortswords, maybe daggers too.

Hm thanks, I've never seen that kind of bow scabbard before, it looks interesting! And as far as the staves, hm, food for thought... polearms face the same design problem.

Yes, but do they have to be?

It's easier for the animations department

Well, the Witcher does have scabbards (it was added as a mod for first game, and Witcher 2 appears to have that as default)  It would be nice if DA had them too, if just as simple static part of the individual weapon models which remains on the player's back when the weapon is drawn.

it'd be nice but i would rather they spend their time on important things. if they have time then great but otherwise i just don't care enough.
