Maybe my elven mage is just the epitome of frugal, but I just noticed that, soon after finishing one major quest in Awakening and doing two or three sidequests afterwards, I'm lugging around 667 gold pieces, plus "pocket change". I know my character is Arl of Amaranthine and whatnot, but I'm starting to feel rich even by noble standards.
Anyone willing to shed some light into the deeper economic realities of Thedas? What is considered average wages for the common folk? What about merchants (see: the poor shmucks to whom the vendor loot is dumped)? How about the nobility; banns, arls, and kings (and their equivalent counterparts)? Does all of Thedas use the same currency or does it vary from country to country? Is there any noticeable inflation?

The economic realities are that every shop can stock an infinite number of health potions.

Why don't you think like this; if you can amass 667 gold just by doing side quests and selling loot, think of how much the merchants are earning. They buy you stuff at a low rate and then sell it back at sometimes 10 times the amount. So in other words, they are very very rich.
Also, adventuring is risky business. Not everyone are up to it. Hence you get rewarded handsomely for it. The common folk perhaps only earn a few silvers per day. Yes, the rich and poor divide is wide in Thedas.
Hah, your problem sovled

Awakenings will make a (honest) solo-nightmare-mage trip through Origins seem as if the "easy button" has been pressed.............
