In a marketplace where one game can sell 25 million copies.

10 million is the sales target BioWare is aiming to achieve with its future releases, studio co-founder Dr. Greg Zeschuk has told VideoGamer.com
At the Develop conference in Brighton earlier this month Zeschuk spoke about BioWare's fortune to have had a few "minor" hits. But if the likes of Mass Effect and Dragon Age are considered minor, what's needed to be classed as a major one?
"Well, we need to sell 10 million units," said Zeschuk. "That's actually the new target, right? We do Top 10 games, our stuff is quite successful. I know Mass [Effect 2] is number eight so far this year, in North America.
"Sometimes I'm facetious when I say some of those things, knowing that we can sell a few million but seeing that someone else can sell 25 [million]. You're kinda like, 'Well, that's a hit!' We always joke that if we only do half as well as Blizzard on Star Wars: The Old Republic, we'll be quite satisfied.
"We've been very fortunate. I always joke about that, but..."
Zeschuk added that he's under no illusion that BioWare is in a position few other studios find themselves in.
"I think we know how lucky we are," he explained. "When we're saying that, we always know that we're super-fortunate that we have a nice combination of things going on - really great support from EA, a budget to make great big giant games. We recognise that in a sense it's a privileged position we're in."
BioWare is currently working on continued DLC for Mass Effect 2. The studio has also announced Dragon Age 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic for release in March 2011 and spring 2011, respectively

comment from user on NG4 Uh oh. Sales sales sales. I hope Bioware focuses on quality, not sales. What, multi-million sellers like Mass Effect weren't enough for you, Bioware? Posted Image

If this keeps up then it will be quantity, not quality in all there games. I blame EA for this. It is always EA's fault.

I think that he is talking about TOR.

Having said that, I would neve expect such success for DA:O, so everything is possible...

10 mil ? Impossible for RPGs.

Only 200% mainstream'd, bland FPSs are able to do that. RPGs might not be niche anymore, but the genre isn't nearly popular enough to get those numbers.

I'd say 5mil is the absolute max a single WRPG could sell.

BioWare will need those kind of sales, since TOR is EA's most expensive product yet.

Same reason people like Michael Bay movies or the Twilight series.

Bad movies, but everyone is watching them.

FPS games are really the only games I don't like, GTA V will also sell very big, better understand that:-)

Quality games should be the biggest sellers

I get the feeling that at one point Infinity Ward or Bungie will say something like "Movies are selling 100 million.  We can get those sales, right?"

The only FPS franchise that I enjoy is Battlefield. Seriously, Battlefield 2 and 2142 are worthy of the best FPS game of all time in my book. They are so damn good.

It's not gonna happen...10 million, just not gonna happen. Even World of Warcraft which has well over 10 million users struggled to do that. Point being, that's an MMO....if TOR is made well, they might come close to WoW's success.

BG sold about 5 million over the years. Or so I heard.
DAO is at 2.5 mill but without PC market counted, that could make it between 3 and 4 million.
Of course, I think the 10 million is for TOR, MMO attract more people than single player.

The whole difference is 'played it' versus 'not played it'. That's the
litmus test. It's like, "Hey, great. Hold the comment, remember the
game, then play it and make your decision at that point." It's funny. On
the one hand people don't like change, on the other hand they'll
complain if it's all the same.

Sure, people don't like change, some people want nothing but it. But that's not going to be my point.
The point I'm going to... point out, is that while you probably should play a game before condemning it totally, by that time the damage is done. If you have to pay 60$ and play the game to be eligible to comment about it, you've already made a profit out of it, and the criticism is'nt going to make a damn bit of difference, since the game is out.

People who don't like what they are seeing says so because they want to point out what they think are errors, and I'm not saying that that is going to change anything, but their criticism is still fair and valid - even if not particularly well expressed. We're still prospective customers for this game.

Reviewers play a lot of games, they're opinions often reflect the core
segment, and generally they're well put-together and comprehensible. Fan
feedback can be all over the map, right? So we'll draw on that fan
feedback but a lot of times we'll primarily draw on reviews

I'd like to know if he means printed magazines or the e-tabloid ones?

Q: How is sex going to be handled in Dragon Age 2, and how do you
react to the intense scrutiny and interest that accompanies the sex in
Dragon Age and Mass Effect? I mean, I have a friend who was absolutely
obsessed with trying to nail one of his party members. What do you think
of that?

GZ:
Will there be romance opportunities? Of
course! It's not just your friend, it's a large part of the experience.
It's really funny, because when we first did it in Baldur's Gate, the
same concept, we asked fans and did focus tests they all said, "Oh no,
we don't really care about that, we're not really interested." Yet when
they play, they do the exact opposite. They obsess over it, spending all
this time and effort, and in Dragon Age you had the gifts. It was
involved, right? I think it's something that's actually an important
part of the game. It's part of the whole concept of having
relationships. I think it's a good thing. They key thing for us is that
it's mature content for an appropriate age group.
But I think it's a big
part of the game.

From the article the snippet directs you to at the bottom. My emphasis.

I really did'nt like how relationships were handled in DAO, and sadly I don't have any ideas to actually improve it, but;
How can you consider gift giving as a mature and involved way of building a relationship with someone?
The last time I checked, pouring gifts over someone and then expect a "relationship" to form from it, was considered prostitution - and would most likely end up with you being slapped in the face. Unless you want every follower from DAO to be considered shallow and greedy ofcourse.

WTB; Preview button, PST!

If that truly is the goal DA2 then Greg and co. need to stop smoking that wacky . I don't care what they do with it a fantasy single player RPG will not pull 10m sales for a long time, if ever. The market just isn't large enough for such a number to even be approached, let alone reached. If Origins hit's 4m that alone would be astounding and a sign the market it growing (or resurrecting), but unless they've got about 6m buyers they can pull out their  that's about as far as they'll go.

The Old Republic on the otherhand could quite possibly pass that number if it manages to draw over a chunk of the WoW crowd. Star Wars, BioWare, WoW style MMO has a lot of promise for success.

In order to get 10 million sales, they need to make a western game that appeals to players in Asia - like Blizzard.

Either that, or they'll have to team up with Nintendo to produce a Mario or Pokémon themed RPG.

Well they did take over Mystic, but I don't know exactly how much influence they had in japan.

I see no mention of how they appreciate their loyal customers - you know - the people who actually buy their games in order for them to reach their potential sales targets. Unless they feel they have no need for loyal customers, perhaps EA and Bioware employees can buy all 10 million copies themselves  How smug can one be.

No because very few people play RPGs. I think Bioware should just target Nerds (us) But that's just my opinion.

I guess we can say goodbye to quality Bioware games unless they're talking about SWTOR.

The game which scored the highest was mario, but this sounds like they were talking about MW2. I mean if you want to make that kind of cash then make a game like halo or MW2. It seems either its Mario or FPS then it won't go that high. Plus most of those people are power gamers. They buy the game play it then throw it away. Thats not an achievement thats an insult.
