True enough. I seriously doubt that he believes that they will be able to sell 10 million units per game though; that does not seem possible, whatsoever.

He's not saying he expects every game to sell 10 million copies.  What he's really saying is he wants to produce a monster-hit game.  Bioware is a top tier developer, there is no reason why they shouldn't have this goal.  If others can do it why can't they?  Even if its not common.  People are reading way to much into his comments thinking he expects every single game they produce to sell 10 million.

Critics thinks so, as do most gamers who like Diabo.

A lot of critics like WoW's latest expansion too. And AoC/WAR. And Guild Wars.

They aren't good games. WoW's expansion was a joke, AoC/WAR were both horrible at release, and GW is not an MMO.

Check out their respective forums, as well as gaming community forums. I am not the only one with this opinion. My point is, critics are not always reliable, nor are sales, when it comes to deciding if a game is good or not. The only way to judge is to actually play the games (which, I have)

So because you and a few others didn't like them they are automatically bad? I didn't like Mass Effect, does that make it a bad game? I certainly don't think so, I just didn't like it.

Just out of curiosity what does GW not being an MMO have to do with it being a good or bad game?

No, it doesn't. That wasn't my point actually. I never asserted that my opinion automatically meant that the games are bad, and that everyone should agree with me, sorry if it came across like that.

Well, obviously, thousands disagree with me, but I felt that it shouldn't be called an MMO, as it didn't actually have some of the more basic features, and not what I was expecting when I tried it, in terms of gameplay, mechanics, and well, everything I would play a MMO for. And this is, again, subjective, and I am not asserting it as a fact.

Yeah but that doesn't answer the question.  What does it not being an MMO have to do with it being a good or bad game?  Being mislabled as a MMO doesn't make the game itself any better or worse.  Unless you are saying that you don't like any games that aren't MMOs (which I'm pretty sure is not the case).

I'm not trying to argue that GW was good or bad, I honestly don't know (or care).  Just that comment seemed odd to me.

Yeah, I suppose I shouldn't have added that in the first place. I retract that particular statement, then.

I seem to have derailed the thread. Apologies--back on topic.

IMO, Torchlight was OK relative to the amount of money it cost. Not great, but OK. To be honest, I quite like games that follow Torchlight's model--smaller and cheaper games more readily available for download without as much time or energy pumped into marketing. The Pixel Junk games, Critter Crunch, Aquaria, and World of Goo are MADE OF EPIC WIN. But that doesn't mean that particular model is necessarily SUPERIOR to the standard way games are made, sold, and marketed. Nor is it unique to PC gaming as was implied.

I just find this whole thread funny.  I'm amazed people are surprised that the head of a AAA development studio has a goal of making a blockbuster game.  I would be shocked if he didn't.

I'm also amazed that people are so shocked that he doesn't pay attention to the whining and crying on the forums.  All you have to do is spend 5 minutes here (or pretty much any internet forum) to see that 99% of what is posted is stupid, unfounded, or just plain silly (and I'm not excluding myself from this).  He did say "You listen to the person who put a lot of thought into it, who went out of their way to provide feedback."  Those are the people he should be listening to.  Not the morons screaming at the top of their lungs.  No matter what you do there will always be morons screaming.

P.S. I'm not saying everyone with complaints are screaming morons.  If you are being constructive then you don't fall into that category.  However, you also have to realize that with so little information at the moment your opinion probably won't be weighted very heavily.

Critics rate Mass Effect 2 at 94 compared t the 83 for Torchlight. So quite obviously Torchlight should be more like Mass Effect 2, such that it can be even better in the eyes of the critics.

Except he gave a direct number, (Albeit with an unclear use). You don't need to sell 10 million units of a game to have a blockbuster, 10 million is well beyond the level of a blockbuster especially for an RPG/Hybrid. We're looking at the exact number stated, not the fact he wants to sell lots and lots of copies.

I find it hilarious that people are making a problem out of the fact that a company has a sales goal. You never cease to amaze me Bioware forums!

And the fact that specific goal is deemed nearly impossible by all present standards isn't enough to spark a little curioisty and debate?

It could just be a 'aim for the skies' sort of goal. Or even a joke.

And I already acknowledged that possibility, but it's only a possibility. Another possibility is he truly wants the 10 million mark to be a target. We've simply be exploring that possibility.

Then this clearly isn't a thread you'll want to bother with. What a time saver!
