Is the ME1 DLC any good?
What about combat?

Still, I play games mostly for the story, so it doesn't really bother me if the gameplay isn't very good

How does it suck? Ive seen vids and it looks similar.
The only difference I see in the two games is that ME1 you cant customize as much, like your armor.

Its less linear, but environments repeat a lot.
Personally I find it slower than ME2 and less polished with visuals, but the bonus of importing characters is fun.

Be patient with the first game, get through it, and I think you'll enjoy the payoff.

I played ME1 before ME2... and loved it. I preferred ME2, but ME1 will always have a place in my heart. It is not a perfect game, but if you really liked ME2, playing ME1 will be essential.

Interestingly enough you may even feel that, despite the graphics and the cover system (which isn't as necessary in ME1) aren't as good as ME2, some aspects of the game may feel like they've taken a step forward rather than back as you might imagine. At least that's the general impression I get from reading some posts on the forums.

When you say "repeating enviroments," what do you mean? The terrain is similar? Or the exact same layout of levels?Simpfan wrote...
Its the same but different.

Graphics dont worry me. I play ME2 on medium, so probably ME1 will look great.

Its with side missions.
The planets and bunkers you visit tend to blend together after a few.

if you like ME2 you will like ME1 as well. Story kicks in, many say character evolution is even better in ME1. When i moved from ME1 to 2 i missed a lot of things i loved in ME1.
With the time i saw it in perspective and am fine with most of them. Combat is a little different in ME1.. means usually its better to strafe or go in your knees to shoot than to cover. sometimes this makes it more dynamic. i play the last attack on citadel wihout pausing once as example.
inventory and upgrades will surely overwhelm you first but you shortly know what rocks and what doesnt and than you just upgrade to the higher version of the upgrade ammo/item.
so yes, do it. you wont regret it

Well I guess that seals it, I will get ME1.
Yes, ... do it!
Though Mass Effect 1 has a less good combat system (especially Insanity is just about the insane amount of bullets your enemies can take *shudder*) and the combat is overall less smoothy than in ME2, this point completely pales in comparision with the, at least in my opinion, superior story-telling. As for the story itself, well, Mass Effect is the cracking opener of a great trilogy and ME2 the interim between this one and the end so one can't really compare them in terms of depth, but the story certainly feels more epic than in ME2.
And one final hint you should consider when playing through the game, do whatever missions and sidemissions BEFORE playing the Virmire Level, ... I don't want to spoil you, but if you save that mission for the end run, the epicness of said will blow your mind!

I was the same as you, i played, and finished, ME2 before even trying ME1. I will say that there were aspects of ME1 i actually liked more than ME2. Playing through both as the same character is much more satisfying and you will get more out of the game. I'm not sure why everyone says the combat isn't as good in ME1, i found it to be pretty much the same, but maybe i'm not an experienced gamer like most.
