ME1 isn't as good as ME2, but the story is better. However, the combat sucks
How does it suck? Ive seen vids and it looks similar.
The only difference I see in the two games is that ME1 you cant customize as much, like your armor.
powers regen a bit slower. My personal opinion is that it was the best RPG shooter of 2007-2008 and it's gameplay still beats out Fallout 3s from what i understand. the cover system is pretty basic (walk at the object eventually you'll enter cover with your back to it) and storming only occurs in combat.
the only downside, for some people, to the game is you are literally flooded with items though not in the DAO sense in ME 1 you're flooded with items you can mostly use. the customization of weapons was confusing but after a few playthroughs you get the gyst of it. that and some of the descriptions can be pretty self explanitory.
furthermore the squad controls are almost the same but you need to rely more heavily on tactical pause in ME 1 than in ME 2 in combat to give orders. Team Mates aren't as 'smart' either but they get the job done
anywho it comes down to this:
ME 1's combat system was Amazing in 07 and 08 it wasn't until 09 it became mediocre and it wasn't until ME 2 release that people started to say it sucks. the only complaint i have against it is it feels old but it's still a great deal of fun. and unlike ME 2 you will not get stuck on cover (sprint, interact, and cover are all different buttons not the same one ^^ i like this because in ME 2 i constantly get snagged which is my biggest Beef on ME 2s gameplay >.<) the only problem with the ME 1 cover system is that it's incredibly easy to leave it and you might do it with out realizing some times. the AI also prefers to get in close and mellee/shotgun you in ME 1 than stick it out at range.
planet scaning is point and click no mini game.
it's much more story driven than ME 2 and you might find you like it more. it's also part sandbox (more so than ME 2)
furthermore your conversation choices aren't as limitted to your alignment as ME 2s. reason being in ME 1 you have charm and intimidate talents that open more convo options.
on the note of talents there are alot more than ME 2.
Medigel is not a power it is an easily replaceable item unlike ME 2 where it can be hard to find. it also regenerates health rather than revives team mates
the SR1 Normandy is much much smaller than the SR2.
doing achievements in ME1 actually affects all files after ward for example you unlock assault rifle achievement with a soldier all classes can use the AR now. There are no heavy weapons or SMGs and sniper accuracy is bad at first. though the shotgun has a particular talent ability that allows it to fire like a rocket.
you can actually see your shield level unlike ME 2. health doesn't regenerate as fast. and Certain armors have hidden abilities.
lots and lots of easily accessible side quests lots of fun exploration.
my review of ME1 standalone is: Awesome game you
need to buy it if you want the most out of ME 2 and you haven't played ME 1
------------------
on it's DLC
i believe someone mentioned pinnacle station already that DLC was bad. waste of Five Bucks basically the premise was it was a combat arena it has no tie in to ME 2 or even a particularly applicable place in ME 1 wish i could get my 5 dollars back.
on Bring Down the Sky (often referred to as BDtS) it is probably the super overlord of ME 1 (if you don't have overlord for ME 2 you should also get that 5 bucks well spent there) it's the only spectre mission not related to saren and adds anywhere from 45minutes of gameplay to 2.5 hours of gameplay. there is also a convenient grenade stash somewhere in the DLC map towards the upper right of the map? not sure. anywho it's great. Wonderful emotional play all around fun a couple of side quests and it's the easiest way of getting the best armors in the game. also you get some nice amps and omni tools out of it. fun fun mako driving experience for the other half. considering it's free for PC (at least) it's a great deal and well worth any ammount of money on Xbox live (less than 10.00, 9.99 is acceptable)
----
overall
the game is horribly cheap now I've seen it seel for 10 bucks at gamestop before and it's available for 20 on steam and most stores you will get your money back in your first 2 playthroughs (if you use the dollar per hour rule if not you'll feel like you invested well by endgame first playthrough)
suffice to say it's the only game where i felt the need to watch the credits through all the way every play through with what is possibly the best end credit song in any media.
i give ME 1 a 9.90 out of 10 (it loses .10 because there can be alot of menus sometimes :/ but i enjoy those)
and you sir shoudl deffinately buy it.
