Does the art style reflect a new direction in the feel of the game?

Does this mean the dark adult tone will go away? Origins had a gritty feeling...dark adult fantasy was what they were talking about all the way through he build up. The cartoon like art style worries me that it will be toned down. Origins did some brave stuff (the Conner mission) I hope this is true in this game.

Who truly knows at this stage? I share your concern about the art direction though. The look of Origins was in a believable tone.

I wish they would use Mass Effect 2's engine. Mass Effect has the best looking graphics and art direction of any modern blockbuster imo.

Possibly so, but as an RPG engine, it is sorely lacking. DA engine is better in that point.

I agree. And I seem to remember hearing that the reason we were restricted to 3 characters at once in ME was that the engine couldn't handle any more.

Uh thats not true. You can make any sort of game with an engine. Gears of War has 4 party members for example and it uses the Unreal Engine too. Then you have Bioshock which is an FPS unlike Gears and ME and also uses the Unreal Engine. So the engine has little to do with the gameplay design decisions you mention. There isn't such a thing as an RPG engine.

As far as performance goes ME2 runs better than DA while looking better at the same time.

They are trying to sell 10million copies. so most likely this will be average combat oriented game for the masses.

I'm well aware of that, but you must realise that certain engines have their advantages, like the Eclispe engine was built to allow large-scale battles. By "couldn't handle" I meant that Bioware said it was a struggle to maintain a playable framerate on the Xbox 360 with more than 3 party members at once.

Hmm... Interesting.  People seem to throw "engine this" and "engine that" pretty liberally.  Of course, there must be some substantial difference in engines, otherwise, there wouldn't be so many.

As for the OP, my secret hope is that DA2 will have two art styles - one, more reflective of the DA:O style, that is used "in the real world" where the narrator and his audience are; and the second, perhaps more dreamy, stylized and anime-esque, that is used for the "flashback narratives" or whatever Hawke's story it being called.

They might just have different artists that is why the design has changed ;) or they might of been chucked a bit more money :)

I am not worried about Dialog Wheel, I am not worried about "Cinematic experiences" and so on, I have kept very high hopes for DA2. But the art style, if I understood it correctly, is probaply only thing that is truly bothering me. I do NOT like slightly exaggerated "cartoonish" style. DAO was very dark and gritty in realistic way, and despite its obvious graphical faults the idea was perfect.
