Obsession is creepy enough on its own. Add Waits' guttural vocals and you're in for one hell of a bender.

Bill569, in case you weren't joking - by what criteria, and what study has shown such a thing? (Not to say that dolphins aren't smart, they are clearly among the smartest animals out there.)
I had a conversation with my physics teacher last year and we were talking about human intelligence and he told me that. I think I also had read that somewhere before. Anyway, now that I googled it, from what I read I understood that dolphins are definitely the second-smartest animals and that some scientists consider them as smart or even smarter than humans, but most scientists consider them the second-smartest.
Names and references to studies please. From what I can tell, dolphins are rated about as smart as chimps - with some placing them sligltly lower, some slightly higher in intelligence. No reputable scientist of a relevant field I know of makes the rather absurd claim that they are anywhere near as smart, or smarter than humans.
What your physics teacher tells you about biology has about as much weight as what your plumber tells you about cooking. Being a scientist, or a science teacher, does not give you expertiese in every field of science. Even among biologists, most would not be qualified to comment with any authority on the intelligence of dolphins - you would have to look for marine biologists specializing on marine mammals.
Ok, to begin with I did not go that deep into the subject to find exact studies and names. You obviously know more on the subject than I do, so I stand corrected. But since you asked, here is where I read what I read: http://www.timesonli...icle6973994.ece, http://www.ehow.com/...han-humans.html
I just googled the topic to get the general idea. My personal opinion is that dolphins are definitely not as smart as humans.
Also, regarding my physics teacher, it doesn't mean that unless a topic isn't completely associated with one's field they cannot be taken seriously. However, on such a controversial topic, with research still going on, I agree that you have to ask an expert to get a clear answer (however, that answer you will get can still be wrong). But hey, I didn't know that when he told me.

The times article is interesting, and I definitely agree with the need to consider expanding the rights of highly intelligent animals. The article argues that dolphins should be considered slightly above chimps as to when it comes to intelligence.
As for the other article, I don't remember who said it, but it holds true almost 100% of the time, when it comes to any commercial publication: "Whenever a news title is in the form of a question, you can safely assume that the answer is 'no'"
This is because news organizations want to sell their news, or gain viewership, and they cannot do it (and remain reputable) by reporting outright lies - such as "Dolphins are smarter than humans!". Yet people gravitate towards the more outlandish and surpricing titles. So, the news site/organization solves this by making the title into a question - that way they aren't exactly lying, they are just asking a question, the answer to which happens to be "no".
The problem with such titles as "are dolphins smarter than humans?" is that many people just read the title, and after a while, remember it as "that article that said that dolphins are smarter than humans". They then go on to spread this myth as fact. Somehow I suspect that this is what's happened with your physics teacher in this case.
Another source of the myth may be that dolphin brains are somewhat larger than human brains in absolute size, but absolute size of brain does not matter when considering intelligence - it's more about the body size - brain size ratio, and that's where humans get the top prize. (Intelligence is also very difficult to measure in any fool-proof way - crows are surpricingly intelligent, as is the octopus.)
As for authority - of course a non-specialist can be correct when commenting on something that is not his/her expertise, but you should never take their word as in any way authoritative, even if they are very educated and smart in general. Especially with claims that seem extraordinary, you should double check with an actually qualified authority (often to be found with a simple google search) before repeating the claim as being true.
