5) A Child's Life (and Other Stories) - Phoebe Gloeckner (Frog Books)

Posted Image

Ok, you want a taste of real life? When it comes to a story that has no superpowers beyond the simple ability for the human spirit to endure the horrors of life, there's Art Speigelman's Maus, and this. Only this can rip your guts out with the evils that dwell in our own cities, towns, and neighbourhoods. This is the only comic book that has left me in tears and feeling sick in the comic shop and almost unable to buy it afterwards. Considering A Child's Life's subject matter - child abuse - you might not expect it to be easy reading, but the way Gloeckner hides nothing and shines light on the most vile aspects of this subject matter can leave you feeling like someone just worked you over with an emotional baseball bat. I warn you now, it's very powerful stuff.

2) The Invisibles - Grant Morrison (DC Comics - Vertigo Imprint)

Posted Image

This comic can change lives. No, really, it can. It can make you question authority and question reality, question gender, race, freedom, time... I read the first book on a whim and was changed forever - and you can be too. The Invisibles is like going to a club with the best music in the universe and taking far too many mind-altering substances. And then dancing until 6:00 AM. Mindbending action, adventure, romance, evil on an intergalactic and metaphysical level, time travel, magic, gunfights, alien monsters... oh, and the rebirth of Buddah - only he's an angry little bastard from Liverpool who'd rather petrol-bomb your house than hand out some handy zen-like quotations :D

Welcome to the inside of Grant Morrison's head... it's kinda messed up in here, but it's amazing ;)

Ok, he's not much of a looker, but you can't go wrong with a giant green swamp monster that incinerates evil with a touch... or just smashes the crap out of it ^_^

You really can't go wrong when your comic book is titled "Giant Size Man-Thing."
